Bells return as the primary currency in Animal Crossing New Horizons. They are needed to pay off the various loans you'll get from Nook Inc., and to purchase certain items. There's a wide range of methods of earning Bells, some being a lot faster than others. In this guide we'll show you the best and fastest ways to make Bells while playing. Let's get started.

On this page:

How to Make Bells Quickly in Animal Crossing New Horizons (August 2020)

It's important to state that as of the time of writing, there are no known money cheats or exploits available in Animal Crossing New Horizons. The methods outlined below are all legit, and will each be a great way to make Bells as quickly as possible. Here's the best ways to make Bells.

Selling Fish and Bugs

One of the best ways to make Bells early on in Animal Crossing New Horizons is to sell fish and bugs. Obviously, you'll want to donate the new species that you find to Blathers (more on that here), but spending some time fishing and catching bugs will quickly make you money. Fish like the Golden Trout are particularly lucrative, and keep an eye out for any Peacock butterflies while exploring your island (the butterflies are green and blue in color).

Catch Tarantulas/Scorpions

This method involves some bravery but it's absolutely worth it in the long run. Heading out at night, you may come across a tarantula. If you manage to catch one, you'll earn a lot of Bells, we're talking thousands here. There's a risk that you may get bitten and faint, so approach with care, you can read more on catching them in this guide.

Bell Vouchers

Once you've unlocked Nook's Cranny (more on that here), you'll be able to purchase Bell Vouchers from the Nook Stop machine. For 500 Miles, you can purchase a voucher which will give you 3,000 Bells upon sale. This is a good way to convert your Nook Miles into Bells.

Sell Fossils

If you want to make a quick buck, selling fossils is the way to go. You'll want to donate the new fossils you have to the museum, but selling any duplicates will net you thousands of Bells.

Dig for Bells and Plant Money Trees

There are sometimes Bells buried in the ground. Visit our guide on where to find them here. Once you've dug out the hole, head into your inventory and pull out 10,000 Bells. Bury this back into the hole with a shovel and in a few days you'll have a money tree with 30,000 on it.

Sell Your Unwanted Items

You'll naturally collect a lot of junk that you don't need while playing Animal Crossing New Horizons. Furniture that doesn't fit your vibe can be sold, as can clothing. Consider selling items that you don't need.

Take Advantage of the Turnip Market

Turnips are unlocked after building Nook's Cranny. Every Sunday, you'll have the chance to buy Turnips. Each day, the price of Turnips will change. Selling on the right day can make you a lot of Bells, read more in our Turnips guide.

Fram Atlas Moths

There used to be a tarantula island exploit that was great for making loads of Bells. Now, Atlas Moths are in, so follow the steps in this guide to learn how to make Bells from Atlas Moths.

Dream Bells Exchange Tickets

If you head into the dreams of other players in Animal Crossing New Horizons you can get a Dream Bells Exchange Ticket in return. You can trade it at Nook's Cranny for 5000 Bells. This is a good way to earn some extra cash.

Here's the Fastest Way to Make Bells Early On

You won't have all that many opportunities to make Bells early on in Animal Crossing New Horizons. Consider the method below when you're just starting out.

  1. Stock up on Tree Branches
  2. Craft a fishing rod
  3. Fish until your inventory is full
  4. Sell the fish to Timmy
  5. Repeat until your fishing rod breaks then swap to another

Animal Crossing money making: How to get bells fast in New Horizons explained

One activity you're going to find yourself doing a lot in Animal Crossing: New Horizons is making money or, to be accurate, making bells.

There are loads of ways you can make money in New Horizons; it could be as simple as selling sea shells or as risky as playing the stalk market.

In this guide, you'll find a variety of money, sorry - bell, making methods we've discovered in Animal Crossing: New Horizons to help you stay as wealthy as possible.

On this page:

Bells in Animal Crossing: New Horizons explained

Bells are one of the two currencies you can spend and earn in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. The other currency is Nook Miles.

You'll use bells to pay off your various mortgages, fund upgrades to your island, buy new clothes and furniture, among other activities.

Animal_Crossing_New_Horizons_Bells_6

Bells are basically what makes the Animal Crossing world go round. For this reason, you're going to spend an awful lot of your time in New Horizons earning, and spending, bells.

You can find your current bell balance by opening your inventory.

Animal Crossing money making: How to get bells fast in New Horizons

Below you'll find some money making methods for New Horizons, which will make paying off your mortgage or funding that new addition to your island a lot easier.

  • Purchase Bell Vouchers with your Nook Miles. For 500 Nook Miles each, one of these vouchers will give you 3000 Bells. This makes Bell Vouchers a great way to earn some quick money, especially if you've collected a large amount of Nook Miles.
  • Play the stalk market. If you're looking for a high risk, high reward investment, then the stalk market in New Horizons is for you. Every week Daisy Mae will visit your island to sell turnips at a price that will vary from week to week. You can then sell these turnips to the Nooklings; their prices will differ from day to day, however, so you might end up making a loss.
  • Sell the 'Hot Item' of the day at Nook's Cranny. Once Nook's Cranny has opened on your island, the Nooklings will select a 'Hot Item' every day. If you sell this specific item to the Nooklings on this day, you'll receive double the profit. The 'Hot Item' is randomly selected, so you might not always be able to take advantage of this bonus.

  • Complete favours for your villagers. The animals who populate your island are always going to be looking for a helping hand and, if you offer yours, they're going to reward you. Sometimes this reward will be bells, other times it could be spare clothing or furniture that you can sell.
  • Selling unwanted furniture. Throughout your time in New Horizons, you're going to receive, find, buy or create an awful lot of furniture, some of which you're not going to want. Selling this unwanted furniture is a great way to earn some bells. You can even further this by using your spare crafting materials to create furniture to sell to the Nooklings as well.
  • Catching and selling fish. The waters around your island are filled with fish and, with your trusty fishing rod, you can quickly make some money by selling them to Nooklings at either Nook's Cranny or Residential Services. There's no limit to how many fish you can catch each day either, so, if you love fishing, this is a great way to earn some bells.
Animal_Crossing_New_Horizons_Bells_5

Coming soon is the huge Animal Crossing 2.0 update release date. Until then, if you're new to Animal Crossing, our New Horizons tips can help with the basics. From the off, there's fish and bugs to catch, flowers and fruit to grow with Leif selling seeds, villagers to add or remove and tools such as the new ladder and vaulting pole to collect. Once you have settled in, you'll want to be making as many Bells as possible, start collecting K.K. Slider songs and work on your island star rating, increase your HHA ranking, incorporate Feng Shui into your room design and acquiring kitchen furniture. You can also buy fake art from Redd, use the Dream Suite and island backup.

  • Find the money rock. The money rock is, as the name suggests, a rock that will grant you money when you hit it with a shovel. Everyday one of the rocks on your island will transform into the money rock and it's up to you to hunt it down. Be careful if you're using a Flimsy Shovel - it might break during your quest to find this elusive rock.
  • Catching and selling bugs. Your island is home to a variety of insects, from peaceful butterflies to very angry wasps, and all of them can be sold to the Nooklings at Residential Services and Nook's Cranny when it opens. Remember - it's always a good idea to donate the first new type of bug you catch to the museum to ensure it's added to the collection, even though Blathers isn't too fond of bugs.
  • Visiting Tarantula Island. This is the community name for a Mystery Island which is filled with Tarantulas - one of the rarest insects in the game, which each one selling for 8,000 Bells. Though it's incredibly rare, it's worth trying your hand at visiting if can - as a single trip can earn you up to 250,000 Bells!
  • Selling shells. Everyday a selection of shells will wash up on the shore of your island waiting for someone to collect them. That person is you. Collecting and selling these shells can net you a reliable, daily, profit.
Animal_Crossing_New_Horizons_Bells_1
  • Selling fossils. Thankfully, just like with fish and bugs, you only have to donate a fossil once to the museum. This is great, because each fossil is worth a good amount of bells, meaning you can earn a solid amount each day just by selling your archaeological discoveries.
  • Shoot down floating presents. Sometimes, as you wander about your island, you might see a present attached to a balloon float through the sky. Using your slingshot, you'll be able to shoot down these presents and keep them for yourself. This might reward you with bells or an item, like a piece of furniture, that you can sell.
  • Shaking trees. You'll be surprised what you can find in trees - bells, pieces of furniture, wasp nests.

Hopefully these will help you build that new bridge or buy that sofa you've been eyeing in Nook's Cranny a little bit faster!

No.1 ACNH Bells Making - Money Rocks Rock

Every day, there will be one specific Rock in your town that drops cash instead of minerals each time you hit it, but only for a very limited time after the first hit. To ensure you maximize your reward, try digging three holes or placing three objects in a row, parallel to the rock behind you, to hold the villager in place as you attack the rock. If you manage to land the maximum of 8 hits, you'll be a cool 16,100 ACNH bell's richer. This trick even works on normal mineral rocks too and though you won't get money directly maximizing the number of hits increases the chances of it dropping a gold nugget. And those can be sold at a high price.

No.2 ACNH Bells Making - Fossil Financing

If you really want to make some fast cash, consider selling the three to five fossils that you can find each day rather than donating them at the Museum, as they might be worth thousands of ACNH bells each. Just make sure that you had Blathers identify them first, otherwise the no clings will seriously shortchange you.

No.3 ACNH Bells Making - Sell

Beyond fossils, you'll also find a variety of things and materials on your island that can be sold for fast cash, including fruit seashells, ACNH items and materials that fall by shaking trees and even weeds. Though these aren't worth much, it's still useful in a pinch, especially in the first few days.

No.4 ACNH Bells Making - Exotic Fruit & Money Tree

While you can sell your own island's fruit for a hundred bells each, you can sell non-native fruit from other islands for three times as much. Consider stocking up when using ACNH nook miles ticket visiting a friend's island or even planting a few of those you collect to grow more of your own back home. If you find a glowing money spot, replanting the bell bag we'll see a three times return on your investment in just a few days whenever he grows into a money tree.

No.5 ACNH Bells Making - Go Fish

Fishing is a very effective way of getting money and generally more than bug hunting. If you know which fish are worth the most, especially since the fish can be caught throughout the day and constantly replenish. The barred knife jaw available March through November is worth 5000 bells each, whereas the kola can't which only appears on rainy days, can be sold for a whopping 15,000 bells. Memorize their shadow sizes so you know which fish to target at a glance. Just keep in mind that some fish are exclusive to particular seasons' times of day and even bodies of water. If you're having trouble finding fish, go clamming. Manila clams are incredibly common and can be found all over the beach with a shovel. If you find one, you can use a simple DIY recipe to turn it into fish bait which will make fish appear wherever you scatter it.

No.6 ACNH Bells Making - Bug Off

While we did just say fishing works a teensy bit faster, you can find rare bugs too that can be sold for a ton particularly at night. Tarantulas are worth eight thousand bells to be precise. There's a surefire method to catching them as long as you're willing to be patient. As you approach a tarantula, it'll stand up on its hind legs as soon as they do stop in your tracks and wait for them to back down, then approach slowly and drop your net on them when they aren't standing to catch them with no problem.

No.7 ACNH Bells Making - Special Characters

When CJ or flick visit your town, take a note, they will pay you more for each bug and fish you catch ensuring that you can pay off bridges or debts quicker. Once they arrive, they will stay around until the day resets which is 5 a.m. allowing you to keep selling even well after the stores are closed.

No.8 ACNH Bells Making - Island Excursion

Once you've exhausted, the daily collectibles on your own island you may want to branch out to other islands to plunder all of their natural resources too. With the nope miles tickets purchased at the Nook stop, you can fly to distant islands where no one lives and gather up different fruit, bamboo and possibly exotic bugs and fish. Moreover, you might even find the occasional fossil too, all of which can be sold back for profit.

No.9 ACNH Bells Making - Stalk Market Manipulation

Every Sunday, Daisy May will head into your New Horizons town to sell you turnips and a flat rate, which you then have a week to sell to Nooks Cranny before they expire. The prices fluctuate every day, sometimes for the better and sometimes for the worse. Here's the thing the prices vary for other people's islands all over the globe. So try asking your friends if their turnip prices are being sold at a high price, then drop by their Island to unload your supply for some major cash.

No.10 ACNH Bells Making - Currency Conversion

If you're short on cash but flush on ACNH nook miles tickets, there's a fast method to convert one into the other. Simply pick up a bells ticket from the upgraded resident services building for 500 miles, then sell it to Nooks Cranny in exchange for 3,000 bells.
