Not many people might know that amidst the quarantines and lockdowns, this year I’ve gone down the rabbit hole and come out a giant fan of Dimension 20. Dimension 20 is CollegeHumor’s response to the rise of Actual Play Dungeons and Dragons shows, placing a group of talented comedians and improvisers playing a tabletop roleplay-game in front of cameras. The anthology series tackles different characters and settings per season, with the first one focusing on a group of first year students at a fantasy high school focusing on adventuring. The season is full of mysteries, discoveries, and teen angst, all while the comedians play as elves, half-orcs, gnomes, and more fantasy races. It’s a show close to my heart, which is why I decided to do a book recommendation post based on the core group of characters, also known as The Bad Kids, in the first season of Fantasy High. I’ve kept it to YA books for the characters, seeing as they would be the target audience of YA books. (All books link to Indiebound, which I’m an affiliate of. By clicking and buying through Indiebound links, you support independent bookstores and your local book blogger.)
Riz Gukgak – For the resident teen sleuth, I recommend The Gilded Wolves by Roshani Chokshi. Not only are there heist shenanigans, there are mysteries and an ensemble cast that enhances each of the characters’ roles, very much in line with the way the Bad Kids act around each other.
Adaine Abernant – Sure, Runningby Natalia Sylvester isn’t a fantasy book, but it focuses on a girl going against her parents’ ideologies and beliefs and finding a group of friends who care for her and will tell her the truth, all of which are in line with Adaine’s character arc.
Figueroth Faeth aka Fig, aka the Infaethable – Fig loves being the loudest person in the room, getting attention, and rocking out. However, her personal growth happens when she’s figuring out her place as parents who are estranged from each other and being from different, clashing cultures. This inner struggle is why I chose Color Me In by Natasha Diaz, which focuses on a biracial girl coming to terms with her parents’ divorce, her Jewish heritage, and family secrets and trauma.
Fabian Aramais Seacaster – Fabian is a larger than life boy, believing he’s All That and More due to the way his parents raised him to believe he was the center of the universe. Later on, it’s revealed he has plenty of insecurities, mostly built on toxic masculinity, which is why I’m recommending The New David Espinoza by Fred Aceves for Fabian. Aceves’ book deals with a boy with mental health issues and body dysmorphia, which feels in line with Fabian’s arc.
Gorgug Thistlespring – Listen, I know that The Victoria in My Head by Janelle Milanes centers a Cuban girl joining a rock band in order to escape her introvertedness and her family’s issues, but I truly think it’s in line with Gorgug. Gorgug’s confidence comes from being able to be a part of the Bad Kids and all of them supporting and loving him, and from the get-go Fig believes in him and his abilities by gifting him the drumsticks and asking him to be a part of her band. It’s through this act that Gorgug begins coming out of his shell and gaining confidence, which is in line with Victoria’s feelings.
Kristen Applebees – Kristen is going through a crisis of faith, especially as her family is Fantasy-Christian. In Georgia Peaches and Other Forbidden Fruit by Jaye Robin Brown, the main character, Joanna, moves to a new small town with her preacher father, and he asks her to go back in the closet for the time they live there (spoiler alert: she will not do that). Christianity and sexuality are two of the biggest stressors in both Kristen and Joanna’s lives, and I believe if you enjoy one you’ll enjoy the other’s character development.
Vice Principal Goldenhoard/Goldenrod – I only included him in this just to recommend Blazewrath Games by Amparo Ortiz, because it has tons of dragons and a lot of intrigue.
Ayda Aguefort – If you haven’t read You Should See Me in a Crown by Leah Johnson, you really should. Though Liz Lighty isn’t on the autism spectrum, she struggles with anxiety and panic attacks, all while trying to find her community’s culture around queerness and what “normal” means, much in the same way as Ayda has to deal with in Leviathan.
Tracker O’Shaughnessey – Girls who are werewolves and slightly feral? Lobizonaby Romina Garber is the book for you. It also contains Gays, which is On Brand.
Zelda Donovan – Even though Reyna in Song of the Abyss by Makiia Lucier is a little bit more adventurous and forthcoming than Zelda, I do think they’d get along well, especially with their sense of adventure and hidden anger. They also get crushes on cute boys who are sort of lethal, so that’s a big plus.
Zayn Darkshadow – Emo goth boy obsessed with ghosts and cemeteries and ends up as a ghost? Read Cemetery Boys by Aiden Thomas you funky li’l ghost boy.
What other fictional characters would you like me to assign books to? Does Brennan count as a fictional character if he just voices all the other NPCs? Should I make a list for other Dimension 20 shows?
You can watch the first season of Fantasy High on YouTube for free (though censored because the players swear a lot). Episodes are about 2hrs long but highly entertaining and easy to get through (especially if you speed them up). Parts of season 2 of Fantasy High are available on YouTube, but the rest are available on Dropout, CollegeHumor’s streaming service.

Greykolla art — I legally cannot draw anything except Fantasy High...
I legally cannot draw anything except Fantasy High right now.
It doesn’t have to be good, but it HAS to be Fantsy High.
And now my beautiful, strong, bitter daughter; Adaine, gets to live with the nice furry people. Whom I also love dearly.
(The text by the asterix just says “Never use coloured pencils again this is insane.” I don’t particularly like how this cake out, but it’s fine.)
