WoW: Ranking the Top World of Warcraft Guilds

ESTNN takes a peek at some of the top PVE guilds in World of Warcraft.

Over the years, World of Warcraft has had many top guilds representing it. While the competitive PVP scene has more recently attracted outside organizations such as Cloud9, it’s the OG PVE WoW guilds we want to look at today. Below are our top five guilds based on the most recent Race to World First (RWF) ranking.

5 - Skyline

Rounding out the top five is Skyline, the Chinese based guild representing the Asia region. While the only guild on this list from the region, Asian servers get content two days after those in North America, and one day after Europe. So it’s even more impressive to see guilds in the region blitz the competition and make the list. Skyline beat fellow Asia guild Jitianhong to the world fifth spot by just 45 minutes, showing just how close the RWF can get.

Skyline has steadily risen through the ranks of the RWF in the past two expansions. Starting BFA at 15th, Skyline would climb to 5th for the Battle of Dazzar’alor, before settling at 7th, 9th, and 7th in the final three raids of BFA. This latest kill also marks the guild’s first regional first place, as they look to become a dominant force going forward.

4 - FatSharkYes

After finishing in the top 10 in all but one raid in Battle for Azeroth (BFA), and finishing in a guild highest fourth place for the final raid of the expansion. FatSharkYes (FSY) retained its place at the start of Shadowlands. Formed in 2012, FSY would find their core raiding team in the Throne of Thunder raid tier (tier 15). Aiming for a spot in the top 200, FSY made it in 167 and the start of another top European guild was beginning to form.

Now, in Shadowlands FSY has solidified themselves as one of the top guilds in the world, even moving from their old 3 raids a week to 7 nights a week for the first two weeks of Mythic release. While FSY is not a day-raiding guild like some other guilds on this list, the fact they “only” raid in the evenings just proves how high the standard is within the guild. With FSY starting the raid tier at 4th, expect to see a lot more of them throughout Shadowlands.

3- Pieces

After 10 years in the scene, Pieces made a rapid rise to the top of the WoW PVE scene after they secured the guild’s first World First kill during BFA. Crucible of Storms, which was a shorter, two boss raid was when Pieces came to the forefront as they achieved a double WF for the raid. Pieces would drop down to 5th for The Eternal Palace but would bounce back to 3rd for Ny’alotha.

In Shadowlands, Pieces, alongside a number of other guilds stepped up their preparation for the event and even hosted their own live event so fans could follow the progress. While the guild is not as popular as others in the region, Pieces has been gaining fans globally for its unique tactics and quality raiders. With the world 3rd kill achieved in Castle Nathria, Pieces has now cemented themselves as the World’s 3rd best, and European 2nd guild. All eyes will be on the guild going into the next raid now, to see if they can claim the European 1st or better yet, world-first kill.

2 - Echo

While technically a new guild for Shadowlands, Echo is the re-forming of Method under a new banner. After a series of allegations aimed at their former guild, most of the non-leadership members of Method parted ways with the organization and formed Echo. So despite achieving second place in their very first raid tier, the roster packs some serious experience.

The guild picked up a number of sponsors before Shadowlands launched, and went into the tier as one of the two main hopefuls for the World First race. Despite their best efforts, Echo wasn’t able to secure the top spot, losing out to North American guild Complexity-Limit. Echo will learn from Castle Nathria, however, especially as it was the rosters’ first time using an external raid leader. Something pioneered by Limit back at the end of BFA.

1 - Complexity-Limit

Back-to-back World Firsts has seen Limit rise to the number one spot for WoW PVE. With their innovative tactics, and pioneering use of an outside raid leader in the form of Guild Leader, Max, Limit turned heads during BFA. It all came good at the end of BFA, however, when Limit achieved greatness and secured a well deserved World First. Doing so took the title away from Europe, and Limit went on to grow from that.

In Shadowlands, Limit took it to the next level, being the only guild to do a live, in-person event featuring a number of their top raiders, including raid leader Max. It all paid off in the end, with Limit looking clean through the tier, picking up countless World Firsts on the way. With Limit, we could well be seeing just the start of a new dynasty, and it’s exactly what North America needs after years of watching European guilds take the top spot.

Shadowlands: 10 Best Raiding Guilds In The World

Raiding in World of Warcraft has been a mainstay of the MMO's end-game since the very beginning. It's long been a way to continue playing the game at max-level without losing a sense of progression, and the addition of the public raid finder known as Looking For Raid (LFR) opened up this content to more casual players.

RELATED: World of Warcraft: 10 Hardest Raid Bosses Of All Time, Ranked By Attempts

While raiding can be done by just about anybody nowadays at the regular difficulty level, raiding at Mythic difficulty is an entirely different story. When it comes to WoW best guilds that are dedicated to pushing boundaries and making a name for themselves, raiding isn't a side quest to casually pick up some better loot – It's a lifestyle.

Updated June 22, 2021 by Erik Petrovich: With the release of World of Warcraft: Shadowlands Patch 9.1 in late June comes a new raid to complement Castle Nathria – The Sanctum of Domination. Castle Nathria has been the only available raid in the game's eighth expansion since its release in November 2020, and it proved to be a game-changer for a number of guilds. Castle Nathria is where Echo, made up of former members of Method, made their first Top 5 finish in the world, and a number of other guilds proved themselves in this rotation too.

10 Practice (EU - Ragnaros)

  • Placement in Castle Nathria: Tenth
  • Placement in Ny'Alotha: Eighth
  • Placement in The Eternal Palace: Tenth

Practice is one of the most recent guilds to break into the top 10 rankings of Mythic Castle Nathria. Only founded in 2019 on the EU server Ragnaros, the guild burst onto the scene out of nowhere and has since consistently placed in the top 10 rankings of each Mythic raid they have attempted.

In Castle Nathria from Shadowlands, they were the 10th guild in the world to defeat Sire Denathrius. Back in Battle for Azeroth, they placed eighth in Ny'alotha and 10th in The Eternal Palace.

9 Aversion (EU - DE - Blackhand)

  • Placement in Castle Nathria: Ninth
  • Placement in Ny'Alotha: Sixth
  • Placement in The Eternal Palace: Seventh

Aversion is one of the best guilds in the EU, and likely the top raiding guild based in Germany. They have regularly placed top 10 in Mythic raids since the beginning of Battle for Azeroth and in Castle Nathria were only the ninth guild in the world to down Denathrius.

RELATED: World of Warcraft Shadowlands: Best DPS Specs for Castle Nathria

After a recent server change to Blackhand, the guild is stronger than ever and has its sights on improving its placement in the world and recognition as the top raiding guild in Germany.

8 Memento (EU - Stormreaver)

  • Placement in Castle Nathria: Eighth
  • Placement in Ny'Alotha: 12th
  • Placement in The Eternal Palace:  Top 1000

Memento was founded in 2018 and, despite labeling itself as a semi-hardcore raiding guild, holds the number eight spot in Castle Nathria. They started out as a World of Warcraft Classic guild, and have since made the switch to Shadowlands after seeing the potential the guild had for success.

While the guild only placed 12th in the last raid of Battle for Azeroth, climbing into the top 10 for Castle Nathria shows the rapid potential for success Memento possesses.

7 BDGG (NA - Illidan)

  • Placement in Castle Nathria: Seventh
  • Placement in Ny'Alotha: Ninth
  • Placement in The Eternal Palace: Top 50

BDGG, or Big Dumb Gaming Golden Guardians, is a guild formed from two former guilds Big Dumb Gaming and the Golden Guardians. Big Dumb Gaming and the Golden Guardians were both top North American guilds before the merger, and afterward became the number two guild in the NA region.

The guild boasts a seventh-in-the-world placement on Mythic Castle Nathria, a ninth-in-the-world on Ny'alotha, and multiple top 20s throughout the rest of Battle for Azeroth. The guild is a community-oriented one, hosting multiple events in-game and on-stream and offering guides and content to its members, and has its sights on the number one spot in North America.

6 Exorsus (EU - RU - Howling Fjord)

  • Placement in Castle Nathria: Sixth
  • Placement in Ny'Alotha: Fifth
  • Placement in The Eternal Palace: Fifth

Exorsus is the top Russian guild bar none, and placed number six in the world on Castle Nathria. It has had its fair share of controversy in the past, though, as multiple members were banned during the Legion expansion for exploiting bosses. In their defense, they said they didn't understand why they were punished for their exploits when others went unnoticed.

RELATED: World Of Warcraft: 10 Mistakes All Gamers Make In A Raid

Since then, Exorsus has been a regular within the top WoW guilds for Mythic raiding. In Shadowlands, they even made the guild-wide decision to change factions from Horde to Alliance to deal with the new expansion's content. This was because the Dwarf and Dark Iron Dwarf racial ability removes bleeding, a common feature in Castle Nathria.

5 Method (EU - Twisting Nether)

  • Placement in Castle Nathria: Fifth
  • Placement in Ny'Alotha: Second
  • Placement in The Eternal Palace: First

Method is a guild roiling in the wake of controversy. After a member of its upper leadership was accused of multiple sexual crimes the guild split, with many members forming a new guild and the Method guild leaders instating new policies to prevent something like this from ever happening again.

In the past Method was one of the best guilds in wow, with multiple world firsts under its belt over its 15-year existence. In Shadowlands, Method placed number five in the world in Castle Nathria, perhaps signaling a hopeful future for a guild wanting to rid itself of its negative associations.

4 FatSharkYes (EU - Kazzak)

  • Placement in Castle Nathria: Fourth
  • Placement in Ny'Alotha: Fourth
  • Placement in The Eternal Palace: Sixth

FatSharkYes is a guild with a silly name whose ambitions are anything but. Proudly proclaiming themselves "the undisputed world number four ranked guild," FatSharkYes has multiple placements in the top 5 of Mythic raids dating back to Legion and has been around since 2013.

FatSharkYes placed number 4 for Mythic Castle Nathria in Shadowlands, number 4 in Ny'alotha, and number 6 in The Eternal Palace. At this rate, the guild is looking to break into the top 3 in the next released raid tier.

3 Pieces (EU - Stormscale)

  • Placement in Castle Nathria: Third
  • Placement in Ny'Alotha: Third
  • Placement in The Eternal Palace: Fifth

Pieces celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2020, and after years of improvement have become one of the top WoW guilds for raiding. They had the world first on the Crucible of Storms raid in the Battle for Azeroth expansion and have been a mainstay in the top 5 raiding guild rankings since at least Legion.

RELATED: 10 Best Competitive PC Games To Play Right Now (According To Metacritic)

Pieces is solely focused on the Race To World First, an initiative to push boundaries and motivate players. They placed number three in the world in Castle Nathria and are looking to "put the #PiecesTogether" to break into the top spot once again.

2 Echo (EU - Tarren Mill)

  • Placement in Castle Nathria: Second
  • Placement in Ny'Alotha: Top 200
  • Placement in The Eternal Palace: -

After Method split into two groups, the members who decided to leave the infamous guild formed a new group: Echo. As the name implies, the leadership of Echo is made up of former Method elites who refused to continue under the former leadership.

Echo has seen success as its own entity in ways the members couldn't have foreseen. The combination of decades of experience, incredibly knowledgable leaders, and a dedication to the game and guild community unlike any other secured Echo the number two spot in the world for Castle Nathria, three places ahead of their former guild.

1 Complexity-Limit (NA - Illidan)

  • Placement in Castle Nathria: First
  • Placement in Ny'Alotha: First
  • Placement in The Eternal Palace: Second

Complexity-Limit is a guild like no other, and could more accurately be called an e-sports group than a straight World of Warcraft guild. The group has a litany of world firsts under its belt, most recently placing first in the world for Castle Nathria. They also secured the world first for Ny'alotha back in Battle for Azeroth against one of the most difficult end-game bosses in World of Warcraft history.

Complexity-Limit formed in 2015 when several of the WoW best guilds across North America combined forces to create a raiding team unlike any other. They have since branched out into other games' competitive scenes, such as Hearthstone and Counter-Strike, and their World of Warcraft raiding teams are undoubtedly the best in the world.

The Biggest Guild Breakers in World of Warcraft

The only certain things in a gamers life are death, taxes, and getting addicted to World of Warcraft. At one point or another in our gaming life, we have all dipped our toes in the MMO pool. But some people stick around longer than others. They found the Raids.

Raiding isn’t just an interesting distraction from the base World of Warcraft campaign, it is the whole point of the game. As a viewer or a fan, you could even take part in some WoW betting on your favorite guilds.

Some of the best WoW Guilds raid every day. Since most casual players may never meet up with these guilds, who play on Mythic difficulty almost all the time. Check out this list:

Top 10 best WoW Guilds

10. Memento: EU – Stormreaver

Memento WoW Guild

A relatively new guild in World of Warcraft. They formed in 2018 as a World of Warcraft Classic guild but have since made the shift to the current version of the game.

They claim they are a semi-hardcore raiding guild, yet they seem to be doing everything they can to rise up the ranks of the Mythic Raiding leader board. They have yet to get any World first kills, but they are rapidly gaining in strength and experience.

9. Aversion: EU – DE – Blackhand

Aversion WoW Guild 2021

Aversion is one of the best Guilds in Europe and without a doubt, the best Raiding guild to come out of Germany in a long time. Their server, Blackhand, is a new addition to the Guild and it has made them stronger than ever.

Since the Battle for Azeroth expansion, they have regularly placed in the top ten Best WoW Guilds in Mythic Raids. In fact, they were the ninth guild in the world to down Denathrius.

8. Practice: EU – Ragnaros

If you had any interest in World of Warcraft and betting on esports, this guild would be the perfect dark horse candidate for the next big thing in Raiding. They were only formed in 2019 on the Ragnaros server.

In the two years that they have operated, they have consistently been in the top ten WoW Guilds in Mythic Raids. In fact, they were the tenth guild in the world to down Denathrius and the tenth in The Eternal Palace.

7. BDGG: NA – Illidan

The first North American Guild in our list and possibly the best named guild in World of Warcraft. Big Dumb Gaming Golden Guardians or BDGG for short, is a guild formed by the merger of two of the top US guilds, Big Dumb Gaming, and Golden Guardians.

This partnership has rocketed them to the number two spot in the US and one of the top ten in the world.

6. Method: EU – Twisting Nether

Method WoW Guild

Normally I would have ranked this Guild higher, but I hesitate to do that because of the numerous controversies to come out of this Guild in the past year. One of the high-ranking members was accused of several heinous acts and as a result, the Guild split apart.

This Guild has had plenty of world first kills under their belt but with the recent controversy, I don’t think they will get to the top any time soon.

5. Exorsus: EU – RU – Howling Fjord

Exorsus WoW

Unquestionably the best WoW Guild in Russia. Exorsus is a top-ranking Guild in Mythic Raids and even made the decision to change from Horde to Alliance to deal with the bleeding damage in the Shadowlands raid content. The lengths that they are willing to go to makes them a dream for anyone betting on esports as they will always go that one step further than anyone else.

4. FatSharkYes: EU – Kazzak

FatSharkYes WoW Guild

The Guild with the second-best name on this list. I put them in fourth place because they said so. They call themselves, “the undisputed world number four ranked guild,” and who am I to disagree.

They certainly have the pedigree to make that statement. Since the Legion expansion, they have regularly placed in the top 5 Guilds in Mythic Raids. FatSharkYes placed number 4 for Mythic Castle Nathria in Shadowlands.

3. Pieces: EU – Stormscale

There can be no arguing about the order from here on out. These are without a doubt the top three best WoW Guilds in the world. Pieces have been around for over a decade and still make esports odds in 2021. That takes some dedication and skill.

They had the world first on the Crucible of Storms raid in the Battle for Azeroth and they have not deviated from their goal of the Race To World First. They want to be the first guild to kill whatever Raid boss Blizzard dreams up of next.

2. Echo: EU – Tarren Mill

Echo WoW Guild

This is a splinter group from some of the former members of Method. They created this guild after the controversies with Method. They are already dominating in recent Raids and their years of experience outside of their current Guild makes them some of the best in the world.

Twitch:twitch.tv/echo_esports

1. Complexity-Limit: NA – Illidan

Complexity-Liquid WoW Guild

The best WoW Guild in the world right now. Formed in 2015, they already have plenty of world firsts in their trophy cabinet. They follow an esports methodology and actively train to be the best.

Most recently they have achieved world first kills in Castle Nathria and Ny’alotha.
