What is a Battery Recharge?

Let’s start with batteries. Hopefully I don’t need to tell you that batteries are kind of important, and provide power to things. But just in case: Batteries are kind of important, and provide power to things. Including your car. Your car relies on a battery for two important things. First, the battery is what starts the car. Your car needs power to get started, and the battery is where that power comes from. No battery, no turning on your car. Second, the battery provides electricity to the car when it’s turned off. You know how, when you get to work early, you sit in your car blasting your favorite music and getting pumped for the day? The battery is providing the power for that music, and those lights, and the power windows, and the air, and so on and so forth. Once the car is up and running, the alternator - which draws power directly from the engine - powers those electrical systems. But anytime the engine isn’t running, the battery is the only source of power. The alternator is crucial here, okay? Because not only does it provide power to other systems, but it provides power back to the battery. When the car is running, the alternator recharges the battery. So, when the battery dies, what can you do? Not a whole lot. You can’t turn the car on, you can’t drive, and you can’t listen to music. What’s the point? When that happens, you’ll need to either recharge or replace your battery. There are many different ways to recharge a battery. The traditional way is by jumpstarting your car, which is when you attach your battery to another car’s, turn on that car, and use the power from that battery to turn your car on. If you take this approach, you’ll need to leave your car running for a while before you turn it off, because the alternator needs a fair amount of time to get the battery fully charged. But there are also electrical chargers, that don’t require another car. They can be big, like the ones you find at an auto shop, or small and USB powered, so you can store them in your car in case of an emergency.

When do you need a Battery recharge?

You ran it out of juice

Just like with your TV remote, you can’t use all your car battery forever without consequences. Eventually, it runs out of juice. The alternator will recharge your battery, but only if the car is turned on. If you keep using the battery - say by playing music for hours on end without turning the car on - then you’ll eventually wear out the battery, and then it needs a recharge before it works again. This is also what happens if you accidentally leave your headlights on for a long period of time, only to come back to a car that won’t turn on.

Busted alternator

As previously mentioned, your car battery relies on an alternator to recharge it. If the alternator isn’t working, then the battery has no way of being charged, and you’ve got a dead battery on your hands. This, of course, is a two-part problem. If your alternator is broken, then you need to not only recharge the battery, but replace the alternator.

Battery is dead

And then, of course, there’s the straightforward answer. Batteries just die at some point to the point where they can’t be recharged. When that happens...well, you’ll just need to get a new battery.

How urgent is a Battery Recharge?

Well, if your battery needs recharging then you won’t be able to turn the car on. And you won’t even be able to sit in the car listening to music.

So, unless you just want to stand next to your car looking at it, I’d say it’s fairly important.
