Garage sale season: Find that unique item or great buy at an Erie-area yard sale

On a recent Saturday at 8 a.m., Brian Robb, 41, was sitting in a foldable chair on the front lawn of his Smithson Avenue home in Lawrence Park Township. Beside him was a small table holding a hodgepodge of items — a juicer, a rooster-shaped napkin holder and other household goods. A large blanket spread on the grass held stacks of neatly sorted clothing. Robb had his stereo cranked up to add a festive vibe, individual snack bags of chips available for just 25 cents and a welcoming smile for anyone who walked by.

“This is great,” Robb said. “Just seeing neighbors and chatting with people again.”

Brian Robb sits in his front yard waiting for visitors to arrive at his yard sale May 1 in the block of Smithson Avenue, in Lawrence Park Township.

Sure, yard and garage sales are about buying and selling, but they are also about community and benevolence and even entrepreneurship.

Two doors down from Robb, Madison Blair, 12, was selling one of the hottest tickets in town — Pokemon cards. “We think these will do really well because they are in packs of 10 for just a dollar and these cards are hard to find today,” Blair said.

Below the plastic shoebox container of Pokemon cards, Madison was also selling her colorful works of art, 4-inch by 6-inch chalk drawings, just $1 each.

It's time:Garage sale season approaches in Erie region

Madison’s mother, Sarah Blair, was nearby arranging earrings on a display board. Tables covered the grass in front of the Blairs' row home. Items were well organized, individually priced and spread out for easy viewing. This is not Sarah Blair’s first rodeo.

“I’ve been doing yard sales probably since I was 12 years old,” she said. “I feel like it’s a way to give back to the community, many of my items are just a few dollars.”

She shops yard sales, too. “It’s a thrifty way of living for a single mom,” Sarah Blair said. “You can find a lot of nice stuff that people just don’t need or want anymore.”

Madison Blair, 12, sells her original artwork during a yard sale held by her mother, Sarah Blair, on May 1, in the block of Smithson Avenue, in Lawrence Park Township.

A few blocks over, Melissa Schwartz, an East Springfield mother of eight, was digging through bins of children’s clothes, sizes clearly displayed on the front. “Come spring, my husband and I go to garage sales every Saturday,” Schwartz said. “With five of our own kids and three foster children, we go through a lot of clothes. We got up at 7 a.m. to get here early.”

Rule No. 1 when bargain hunting at garage sales: The early bird gets the worm. In yards and garages across Erie county, it’s first come, first served.

Brittany Shields, left, of Harborcreek Township, and Hannah Dalrymple, right, of North East, look for deals at a yard sale held by Sarah Blair on May 1, in the block of Smithson Avenue, in Lawrence Park.

While shopper Schwartz looked through the clothing, seller Kristin Fisher, on Crotty Drive in Lawrence Park, was doing quick business, selling 5-gallon plastic buckets transformed into fishing buckets with witty sayings, for less than $

“I normally sell them for more than $30 at craft shows, but the pandemic killed all the shows last year,” she said. “Do you know how much room 5-gallon buckets take up in a house? I just need to get rid of some of these, so I’m selling them cheap.”

Fisher is a mother of three girls and one boy. They help her to prepare and sell some of their own things. If they are selling big-ticket items, such as a keyboard, they get to keep that money. Otherwise, they work for ice cream.

“We’ll use money from today’s profits to get ice cream later,” she said. “That’s our family tradition.”

Visitors look at the items for sale at a yard sale May 1, at the home of Mark Concilla on Mountain Laurel Drive in Harborcreek Township.

A short drive from Lawrence Park, there was another big community sale happening in the Village of Foxwood subdivision in Harborcreek Township. This sale was packed with parked cars lining both sides of the streets.

A stop at Mark and Renee Concilla’s house on Mountain Laurel Drive made it obvious what had attracted all the buyers — lots of nice items at bargain prices. A stylish accent chair in mint condition for $ A neutral accent rug for $ Wood bookcases for less than $

While the Concillas regularly participate in the neighborhood sale, they were especially eager for it this year as they had must-sell items.

“We moved my mother-in-law into a retirement community this year and we’re also downsizing our office,” Mark Concilla explained. “We’ve been waiting for this weekend to get rid of some of this stuff.”

The Concillas were doing brisk business, with no fewer than 20 shoppers browsing the tables and driveway, many handing over cash for items in hand or inquiring about larger items.

A vintage vacuum cleaner was one of the more unique items for sale at a yard sale held by Mark and Renee Concilla of Mountain Laurel Drive in Harborcreek Township.

One of those shoppers, Connie Nelson, of Millcreek Township, said she was just happy to be out and about. “I’m not looking for anything in particular,” she said. “I’m just out enjoying the sunshine. It’s been so long since we could do this (garage sales). It’s fun just to see what you might find.”

Tips for sellers

• Price everything. Shoppers hate having to ask how much an item is.

• Prepare to bargain. Most shoppers will offer less than you are asking for an item, so price accordingly. That said

• Don’t expect to get rich. Yard sales attract bargain shoppers. High prices turn people off.

• Check with your spouse or partner. Seller Mark Concilla offers this advice for couples: “You both need to agree on what is going out for sale; spouses need to check with each other or go through the garage before you open the door to make sure you don’t sell something your partner doesn’t want to sell. Trust me on this,” he said.

Tips:6 things to help you have a successful yard sale

• Organization is everything. Spread items out so shoppers can see them without digging through boxes. If selling clothes, sort by gender and size.

• Get change. Hit the bank the day before your sale and stock up on coins and dollars so that you are prepared to make change.

A garden fountain with a price tag of $30 was for sale May 1, at a yard sale held by Kristin Fisher of the block of Rankine Avenue, in Lawrence Park.

• Offer food and drinks. Shoppers get hungry and thirsty. You can make a few bucks on bottled water, hot coffee, bags of chips or homemade goodies for sale.

•  Give it away. Put out a “free” box. Kids, especially, love to come across these as they can find some little treasure.

• Recruit others. A neighborhood or multi-household sale attracts more shoppers who like to hit a lot of sales in one stop.

•  Advertise your sale. Many shoppers still check out the newspaper classified ads before they go bargain hunting.

Cheap in Erie:Lessons learned from a garage sale

Tips for buyers

• Carry small bills. Most household sale items are $5 or less so plan accordingly and carry small bills and coins for quick transactions.

• Don’t arrive early. Early birds get the best items, but don’t show up before the sale starts. It frustrates sellers who are often still trying to get set up.

• Be careful. At the risk of throwing a wet blanket on a happy story, be aware that bedbugs can be found in bedding, fabric and clothing. Use caution when bringing these items into your home.

A ceramic chicken that serves as a napkin and salt and pepper shaker holder was for sale May 1, at a yard sale by Brian Robb of the block of Smithson Avenue, in Lawrence Park.

• Respect the buyer. Low-balling, offering much less than an item is priced, is in poor taste and puts the buyer in a difficult position. However

• Go late for the best deals. Looking for a bargain? Go just before the sale is over when homeowners are likely to sell cheap to avoid packing things up.
