Generic Macros for Priests

Leap of Faith Mouseover Macro

  • /cast [@mouseover,help,nodead][] Leap of Faith

This macro will cast Leap of Faith IconLeap of Faith on the target your are currently mousing over, if it is a friendly target and not dead. Otherwise, it will cast Leap of Faith on your current target.

Specific Macros for Holy Priests

For the Holy Priest Macros we got together with Elvenbane, moderator for Warcraft Priests and author of their popular Useful Macro Templates guide.

We highly suggest that all of your healing spells, as well as other utility spells that can be cast on raid members (such as Guardian Spirit IconGuardian Spirit and Purify IconPurify), be easily accessible. This can be done either through using macros or by addons such as Clique, Vuhdu or Healbot. This will allow you to much more easily cast them on raid members as swiftly as possible.

Basic Healing Macro

This macro is the basis of all of your healing and buff spell macros. You simply replace SPELL with the spell you want that should be cast on a friendly unit including healing spells and dispels. It works as follows.

  • Holding Alt: Self Cast.
  • Mouseover Friend: Cast on Mouseover.
  • Target Friend: Cast on Target.
  • Target Enemy Targeting Friend: Cast on Enemy's Target.
  • Default casting Behaviour: Casts as if there was no macro, and generates the tooltip.
  • #showtooltip
  • /cast [mod:alt,@player] [@mouseover,help,nodead] [help] [@targettarget,help,nodead] [] SPELL

Talent Swapping Macros

These macros are for the level 45 and level 50 talent tiers, and will automatically change the ability depending on which talent you have chosen.

The Level 45 talent tier macro will cast either Halo IconHalo or Divine Star IconDivine Star if talented.

  • #showtooltip
  • /cast [talent:6/2] Divine Star; [talent:6/3] Halo

The Level 50 talent tier macro will cast either Apotheosis IconApotheosis or Holy Word: Salvation IconHoly Word: Salvation if talented.

  • #showtooltip
  • /cast [talent:7/2] Apotheosis; [talent:7/3] Holy Word: Salvation

Self-Casting Angelic Feather Macro

This is a really handy macro that casts Angelic Feather IconAngelic Feather under the player using the new @player shorthand.

  • /cast [@player] Angelic Feather
  • /stopspelltarget

Basic Damage Macro

This is a basic mouseover macro for offensive spells. You simply replace SPELL with the spell you want to cast, it works like this:

  • Mouseover Enemy: Cast on Mouseover.
  • Default casting Behaviour: Casts as if there was no macro, and generates the tooltip.
  • #showtooltip
  • /cast [@mouseover,harm,nodead] [] SPELL

Holy Word: Sanctify Under Cursor

This macro allows you to cast Holy Word: Sanctify IconHoly Word: Sanctify under your cursor immediately, saving you another mouse click. Keep in mind that it can however be difficult to accurately judge where Sanctify will land without the targeting reticle.

  • /cast [@cursor] Holy Word: Sanctify
  • /stopspelltarget

Shackle Undead Focus Macro

This macro allows you to not only cast Shackle Undead IconShackle Undead on your target but also set it as a focus so you can keep an eye on the shackle and recast it if needed.

  • Holding Shift: Clear focus.
  • Holding Alt: Set focus and cast Shackle Undead IconShackle Undead on focus.
  • Default casting Behaviour: Casts as if there was no macro, and generates the tooltip.
  • #showtooltip
  • /focus [mod:alt,@focus,dead] [mod:alt,@focus,noexists]
  • /clearfocus [@focus,dead] [mod:alt,@focus,noexists] [mod:shift]
  • /cast [mod:alt,@focus,exists] [] Shackle Undead

Generic Addons for Priests

Here, at Icy Veins, we use ElvUI for all our characters. This addon is a complete replacement of the default User Interface. It comes with almost everything you need to perform properly: action bars, cooldown timers, proc display, etc.

We strongly recommend that you get this addon and our forum moderator Pandacho has written a quick configuration guide for it.

Clique is a very popular and robust addon that gives people the ability to heal by clicking raid frames of any kind (a good alternative to mouseover macros). It is compatible with most of the major unit frame set-ups (such as the default UI or ElvUI).

Boss Mods: Deadly Boss Mods or Bigwigs

Boss mods are addons that warn you about boss abilities and give you live advice on how to handle some mechanics. We strongly recommend you to get one such addon. At Icy Veins, we mostly use Deadly Boss Mods, the most popular boss mod. A good alternative is Big Wigs.

Exorsus Raid Tools

Exorsus Raid Tools is a useful addon that allows you to track the cooldowns of other raid members, as well as providing you with a wealth of other useful raid information.

Parrot or Mik's Scrolling Battle Text

Parrot and Mik's Scrolling Battle Text are highly customisable addons for displaying floating battle text while in combat (incoming heals, damage of your spells, etc.). They both work very well by default.

Weak Auras

WeakAuras is an extremely useful addon that allows you to have visual effects on your screen, helping you track your buffs, debuffs and cooldowns. It is highly customisable and it can make it much, much easier to keep track of your procs and play your spec more proficiently. It can also be used for a variety of other functions.

"Details!" Damage Meter is a real-time DPS/HPS meter with a lot of additional functionality such as being able to see cooldowns, buffs, debuffs, damage done to specific targets, and statistical analysis. In our opinion, it is superior to Skada in terms of functionality, although it is slightly more complicated to configure. We recommend Details! as your default damage meter, but if you prefer something easier, then Skada is still a good option.

Specific Addons for Holy Priests

Currently, we do not believe that you need any additional addons to play your specialisation to its full potential.

The Best WoW Healing Addons to Try for Retail and Classic

Boss mods

Finding a Bossmods tool you like is an amazing feature. DBM tells you when you need to press something, while Big Wiggs is much more customizable for boss tactics. Big Wiggs has a feature that allows players to set high priority boss abilities, which means you can find an ability coming up and prepare for it much better. For example,  Disc priest might want to ramp to get a huge Spirit Shell out on an ability that occurs every minute, while a Rest Druid will spread HOTS out on raid-wide consistent damage. We recommend Big Wiggs for their WoW Healing addon, but both are perfectly fine.

Clique is an addon that has so much potential for healers. It is an addon that works incredibly well for players looking for a quick solution to mouse macros without writing the macros or finding them from third parties. Furthermore, the addon is entirely compatible with many other raid profiles and user interfaces, such as Vudhu, Elv UI, and the base Blizzard UI. The great thing about the addon is that it works for every healer and is a solid entry point for more advanced healing usability. We highly recommend this as part of your WoW healing Addons.

Decursive is an addon that places small squares on the right half of a screen, adding one box for every raid member. Boxes become highlightable when they have a debuff that matches what the class can dispel of an ally. It makes tracking negative debuffs much easier and acts as a standalone debuff monitor, especially if you use the default Blizzard UI.

Exorsus Raid Tools

Exorsus Raid Tools is an addon made for high-level Retail raiding, but it works fine for Classic WoW. The addon is a communication addon for Raid Leaders to communicate information for fights. However, it also uses customization options to allow players to track the raid better. Healers can benefit from this for tracking their allies cooldowns or creating orders of cooldown usage to better serve the raid on tactics or adaptation. It keeps the comms clear while giving you whatever information on the screen instead. Please note that Exorsus is not on Curse Forge for Classic clients, and needs manually downloading. However, you can download it for Retail WoW through Curse Forge just fine. You can learn more on how to install WoW addons here.

An example of the importation and the customization available with Exorsus Raid Tools.

Grid is another optional healing raid and party frame addon. The purpose of the addon is to make the healer have plenty of customization options across their screen. Unlike other healing addons, Grid has options to place any information they need for their raid and party frames across the screen. There is also some level of customization with Raid plugins to manage various debuffs and other class mechanics the user wants to track.

Healbot WoW Healing Addon

Healbot is one of the oldest healing addons that have kept up with the modern game. Despite it being one of the older healing addons, It combines spell categorisation through keys and has the option to dispel built into its functionality. Furthermore, it is one of the only addons with a clean, user-friendly raid frame.

Quartz is another old school addon that is a fine addition to any spellcaster or healing addons collection. The purpose of the addon is to adapt the basic casting bars, with colours helping to inform players of kickback, silences, range issues and more. It is not exactly that great for modern wow anymore, but it is still another one to spice the gameplay up a bit more.

For anyone who wants a Raid UI WoW Healing addon designed for high-end healing, Vuhdo is a great option. The Raid UI frames completely change, sorting the bars into the middle of the screen, displaying health, mana, debuffs, range and other important information.

Also, the custom raid frames allow Healers to mouseover cast rather than click on the individual character. It can also bind specific spells to specific keys, granting full control over a healing arsenal.

One of the most helpful mechanics of the addon is called spell trace. Spell trace is a feature that informs those using Vuhdo what a spell healed characters. It is incredibly useful for monitoring ‘smart’ heals, which is the code blizzard uses to determine priority healing on lower targets, such as the Shaman’s Chain Heal or the Priest’s Prayer of Healing.

Weak Auras

Weak Auras is not exactly a healing addon in itself, but its customization can be incredibly useful for healers. For example, a Priest in wow can make a Weak Aura to pick up when an assigned DPS has pressed their cooldowns so that you can sync it up with Power Infusion. Alternatively, you can have a weak aura pop up when the boss is about to do a big hit on the raid or main tank. This is great for Shamans in Classic WoW who want to raid heal or a Paladin tank that heavily focuses on the main tank.

Although Weak Auras is not exactly a beginner-friendly addon, it requires some foresight, research, and familiarity before getting really good. Despite this, many players post their weak auras on Wago IO, so you can always grab third party weak auras for those clearing older content or not progressing at a competitive rate.

Must-have WoW addons that will improve your gaming life

At the core of playing World of Warcraft are addons to customize your experience. Addons have been around since the days of Classic and they have only gotten more intricate. There are so many out there that no person could reasonably use all of them. But that’s the beauty of it. Addons are as personal as your experience, and you can customize nearly every bit of gameplay with them.

Here we list some of the best and most useful addons for anyone. Whether you’re a competitive raider or a casual player, all of these addons will improve your quality of life when playing WoW.

Boss Mods

Boss mods have been around since vanilla WoW and fights these days are built around having them installed — even LFR. The fights are so complex that you flat out need a way to track everything that’s going on, so that you know which abilities are coming up and what mechanics you have to do. Boss mods offer all sorts of advantages from alerts to ability timers to audio cues. For players who rely on audio a lot, like healers focusing on health bars, there are voice packs that will turn the visual warnings into voice warnings.

Your choice of boss mod doesn’t particularly matter, since they all work with each other, and generally get the same message across. However, using something different than the rest of your raid can cause issues with more advanced fights. On Mythic Archimonde, we had issues where the two main boss mods were trying to deal with the soaking mechanic in different ways, disrupting the careful dividing of the groups and pointing players in opposite directions.

Boss mods work right out of the box, but I always recommend going into the settings and customizing the individual boss encounter alerts to what you personally need in order to prevent information overload. Sometimes the mechanic warnings will use the same alert sound which can make them blend together. If you need to pay attention to one in particular, such as when to move, it helps if you go in to change the alert to something you’ll notice.

Unit Frames

These are integral for any healer, and useful for other roles as well. Unit frames allow you to completely customize how you see your raid members’ statuses — what health they’re at, who is dead or alive, who has a resurrection or summon pending, buffs and debuffs, what can be dispelled, raid markers, threat indicators, incoming heals, and so on. For healers, unit frames cut down on the response time for healing, both by applying heals directly to the target via click-to-heal or mouseover mechanics, and by showing you what heals are already in effect. Unit frame addons can seem daunting to set up, but once they are, I promise it’s worth it.

The standard unit frames have come a long way, but they still pale in comparison to the functionalities of unit frame addons. I’ve included the most popular unit frame addons for healing that are routinely updated.

WeakAuras is undoubtedly one of the most useful addons in the game, and as such deserves its own category. Even if you have nothing else, WeakAuras is worth it. The name comes from another addon during Wrath of the Lich King, PowerAuras, which was used to create custom visual alerts. When Power Auras stopped being updated, WeakAuras popped up to take its place. Officially it’s “WeakAuras 2” since the author of the first version stopped supporting it and other authors stepped up to keep the addon going.

The great thing about WeakAuras is that you can create anything. Some people make entire UIs out of it, some people add just a couple auras to track some of their important procs. And then there are works of awe that people create to solve specific boss mechanics.

With WeakAuras the possibilities are endless. They can be triggered to only appear under certain conditions, like a particular talent, your health pool, or an encounter ID. You can make you own, which I did for many years before there was a central repository, or download auras created by others on Wago. There is also a client application that will keep your WeakAuras from Wago updated automatically — very important when they are raid encounter auras or you use a set maintained by an author.

WeakAuras can aid in just about every element of the game. Many players use auras to better show their spell cooldowns or procs. With every raid tier, someone will make a set of auras to show the most important mechanics of each fight. And if you ever get a new trinket or try out a new Azerite trait that you want to track more efficiently, simply type in the name on Wago. I guarantee you’ll find several options immediately.

Damage Meters

Damage meters can be controversial due to toxicity that happens when players perceive “underperformers,” but they are very useful when you know how to use them correctly — much like any tool. Proper evaluation will always come from using Warcraft Logs, but damage meters allow you to analyze you and your team’s gameplay while in the raid.

Details! is one of the most popular damage meter addons and it has really stepped up its game with offering good analysis on the fly. Its sheer amount of options sets it alone. Besides recounting damage for each fight, and other things like healing, dispels, or interrupts, the addon has a fight breakdown button after every boss wipe. It includes a summary of damage taken, enemy damage taken, death log, phases, and the encounter timeline. You can also click on the damage meters to see a spell breakdown for every player, as well as compare players.

One neat feature is the ability to set your own nickname to show up to other Details users, as seen above. We’ve had everything from a former member passive-aggressively setting their nickname as “Last chance” right before they gquit, to raiders setting their names as each other to confuse everyone.

Skada has long been another popular and viable damage meter addon. I used for a long time until just recently when I dropped it for Details! (because the “hide meters when solo” option never actually worked properly).

Auctionator add-on for WoW

Quality of life addons

Let’s face it, the Auction House is a mess. And it will likely stay that way until Blizzard completely revamps it. In the meantime, there are addons that will make it easier to traverse the Auction House. My personal favorite is Auctionator. It’s lightweight but also allows for easy listing when I’m selling. It records auction history and listing history so you can see what you have posted items at before. And when you’re buying something, it neatly consolidates all auctions so you can see lowest prices and how many stacks.

No more logging in and out trying to find certain items on your alts. Altoholic will tell you in the tooltips how much you have of that item, what characters they’re located on, and if there are any in guild banks you have access to. You can also check and compare the status of your alts like what gear they’re wearing, their reputations, and everything in their bags and bank from the interface. But the most convenient feature is the mail warning. It warns you if any mail in your characters’ mailboxes is ticking down and about to expire so you don’t have to worry about losing anything important.

System Options

A while back, Blizzard got rid of interface options, in an effort to “simplify” the game for newer players. They didn’t remove them completely, just from the visible UI, and they’re still available through the CVar options. These addons bring them back and make swapping addons easier.

  • AdvancedInterfaceOptions: This addon gives you access to all the options that were removed from the UI. Personally, I use it for extending the camera distance and turning off the map fading when you’re moving.
  • DejaCharacterStats: It’s like AdvancedInterfaceOptions, but it adds back all the missing character information like mount speed.
  • Addon Control Panel: Not only does this make it so that you don’t have to log out to turn addons on or off, but it also allows you to save profiles for addon sets.

Hopefully this list of addons helps you out. There are so many more out there, which you can find at Curseforge to fit just about any need. What are some of your favorite addons?

Setting Up UI And Addons

This video will show you how to install my custom healing ui and how I set up my addons.

1. ElvUI

Making sure that your UI is clean and easy to understand is key to becoming a good healer. If your UI is messy then seeing when people need healing can be hard. Remember your job is not only to heal but to do things such as debuff too.

ElvUI, in my experience is the best UI addon you can use since it allows you to fully customise your UI. Changing things like fonts or sizes of bars and boxes is easy with ElvUI.

Due to the nature of being able to change your entire UI, there is a little learning curve with using ElvUI. However if you take the time to make sure that your comfortable with the layout, you’ll be well on your way to becoming a great healer.

2. HealBot

HealBot is not only a Addon that allows you to change your player frames making it easier to heal in raids and dungeons. It also allows for you to Mouseover and click to cast your spells. For example instead of having to target a player to heal them, all you have to do is place your cursor over their player frame and either left click, right click or use your middle mouse button. That extra second you save from not having to re-target a player may mean the difference between life and death when it comes to healing.

Healbot is a great option if you don’t an MMO mouse with a multi-button side panel. Since you’re able to map different abilities to a combination of keys. For example, flash of light to Ctrl + Left click, means you could just use your mouse to heal.

This Addon also allows you to change the colours of player frames to make things like debuffs and needed dispels visible and easier to manage.

3. WeakAuras

Indicates buffs, debuffs, cooldowns, this helps will resource management (Health/Mana), you can find class specific templates on the WeakAuras website.

This Addon will really help on long boss fights, by taking the worry of managing cooldowns. It will also show when they ready to be cast again away.

4. Details

Knowing how much healing you’re putting out is really important. Not to boast your numbers but to be able to reflect on how you performed. You’ll only get better through practice, and being able to see detailed meters after an encounter will really help.

Details will report practially everything some of those things include:

  • Healing done
  • Dispels
  • Damage taken
  • Over healing done (which is really important not to do)
  • Plus much more.

You’ll also be able to share these with your group, as some people may not use this addon or if you’re in a more serious raiding guild, you may need to share your logs with the Raid leader or officers.

5. Deadly Boss Mods

Every raider or dungeon dweller should use DBM. It shows you dungeon and raid mechanics, for example, telling you to dodge certain things or soak others. This will not only keep you alive but it will also inform you of high incoming damage mechanics, which will prepare you to heal the group.

PLEASE NOTE: Most raiding teams require you to have an addon like this to raid with them as without it, you will highly likely die to mechanics in new content.

How to install the new CurseForge App and get your addons.

  1. Download the program here
  • CurseForge will find you game automatically, if not you can usually find you game via this default path:

2. Select the Mods tab at the top of the CurseForge window, click World of Warcraft and your free to find and download whatever addon you need, it’s that simple.

PLEASE NOTE: Remember to update your addons regularly by selecting ‘My Addons’ and clicking update on each one.
