The 12 Houses of the Zodiac

12 Houses of the Zodiac

Like a clock, the zodiac is divided into 12 segments, or houses, each one ruled by a different sign. The zodiac begins with the first house, and goes counterclockwise around.

by The AstroTwins

Each house is associated with a set of traits, beginning from the self, and expanding outward into society and beyond. At the moment you were born, the planets were all in specific signs and houses. When an astrologer interprets your chart, she blends the meaning of each planet, the house it’s in, and the sign it’s in, to map the obstacles or gifts you’ll face in this lifetime.

When planets visit a house, they light up that part of your chart, and energize that house’s traits. Astrologers use the houses to predict which parts of your life will come into focus, and where you can take the best possible action. To learn more about a house, read about the sign that’s associated with it.

The first six houses are known as the “personal houses,” while the last six houses are known as the “interpersonal houses.”

The eleventh house rules teams, friendships, groups, society, technology, video and electronic media, networking, social justice, rebellion, and humanitarian causes. It also rules originality, eccentricity, sudden events, surprises, invention, astronomy, science fiction and all things futuristic. (Ruled by Aquarius)

12TH HOUSE:

The zodiac completes with the twelfth and final house, which rules endings. This house covers the final stages of a project, tying up loose ends, completions, the afterlife, old age, and surrender. Are you new to the world of astrology? If you are, we’d like to welcome you to this fantastic, mystical world of the stars. It can be hard or even overwhelming when you step into the celestial land of planets and aspects, as there is a vast array of information to unfold. Even if you’re familiar with many facets of this wonderful art, there is always something new to learn.

Today, we’ll be discussing houses—or more specifically, the Relationship Houses.

What are Astrology Houses?

Each person on the planet has a birth chart (get yours here - it’s free!) that is made up of the planetary positions that were occurring at the moment of their birth.

Each chart is divided into 12 houses that connect to different facets of life, like romance, money, or spirituality.

The Relationship Houses

The relationship houses are made up of the 3rd, 7th, and 11th houses of the astrological wheel. Learning more about your birth chart and the aspects flowing through your 3rd, 7th, and 11th houses will tell you everything you need to know about the relationships in your life, whether romantic, platonic, familial, or professional.

Each house in the zodiacal wheel belongs to a trine—a group of three houses that share similar or connected energy. The 3rd, 7th, and 11th houses are all ruled by the element of Air, which is what connects these houses together.

The 3rd House of Communication

The 3rd house is known as the house of communication, and it connects both communication and travel. This house is ruled by the sign Gemini, a social sign that represents intellect. It is also ruled by the planet Mercury, the planet of communication and travel.

This house represents the knowledge that you gather from this realm during your lifetime. In other words, it’s not connected to the spiritual knowledge that comes from beyond you, but rather those areas of study that you focus on in this corporeal realm.

This is the house of all communication—not just the words you share during conversations with others, but written, spoken, and even physical communication. This is why this house belongs to the trine of relationships. Understanding the aspects within your 3rd house can help you better understand how you communicate with others.

This house also relates to family and the things that you learn from your environment, including speech patterns. Understanding your 3rd house placements can give you a deeper insight into your connection with family members.

The 7th House of Partnerships

The 7th house connects to the partnerships you have throughout your life. This house is ruled by the sign Libra, a very social sign indeed. Libras are the social butterflies of the zodiac. The ruling planet of the 7th house is Venus, the planet of love and beauty.

The partnerships associated with the 7th house go beyond romantic partners to include business partners and even friends. This house can also include partnerships through contracts, legal arrangements, or negotiations.

The 7th house gives us a deeper insight into why we choose certain partnerships. For instance, learning more about your 7th house can give you a better idea about your deepest desires regarding certain partnerships. Why would you choose to marry a certain person? For money? Love? Companionship? This house helps you uncover the things that you value most within a relationship.

Learning more about your 7th house placements can also give you a better idea of how your partnerships might grow and change throughout your life. This house also sheds light on the darker aspects of partnerships, like break ups. If you’re going through a stressful breakup or divorce, this house can give you a better idea of the bigger meaning.

The 11th House of Friendships

The 11th house is known as the house of friendships. It is ruled by the sign Aquarius, a sign that is known for its preference of group activities over solo endeavors. The 11th house is also ruled by the planet Uranus, a planet of spontaneity and surprises.

This house can give you deeper insight into how you interact with people and how well you blend into group structures. While this is the house of friendships, it focuses largely on group dynamics, like institutions and organizations. Have you always participated in group activities and clubs? You may have a favorable placement within your 11th house!

The 11th house also gives you a better idea of what kind of friend you are. Are you a laid-back friend or are you overprotective with your pals? Do you prefer one-on-one hangouts or are you better in a crowd?

If you have a hard time making and keeping friends, this house can be particularly useful to study. Challenging aspects within the house of friends will show you what you need to work on or grow past in order to manifest deeper, more meaningful connections.

The Connection Between the Relationship Houses

If you look at your birth chart and see heavy activity in the 3rd, 7th, and 11th houses, you’re probably someone who has a very active social life. Whether these social activities typically run smoothly is also determined by these houses.

Air, the ruling element of these houses, is a very social, friendly element. But like the wind, it can also become rough or even dangerous. This is why understanding your relationship houses is so important. People may enter your life like a destructive gust of wind, and it’s important that you understand your own approach to relationships to avoid being blown away.

Understanding Your House Placements

Learning more about the houses in astrology gives you a better idea of the aspects in your chart because you can see what area of life they connect to. A challenging aspect in your 3rd house will tell you that this may relate to how you communicate with others.

Astrology is rich with meaning and messages, and learning about the houses is just another way to better understand the messages flowing to you from the stars.

Predicting Compatibility with Astrology’s House System

Even if you have read about the subject of astrology in depth, when you speak with a professional astrologer, he or she will be looking deeper into the zodiac’s possibilities than you may have imagined. The general public discusses zodiac signs while astrologers examine zodiac houses. What is the difference between a house and a sign? In astrology, it is the difference between saying you will have a good looking spouse one day and saying the date you will marry him. Big difference.

The house system of astrology is believed to be an invention of the Greeks. Greek sailors adopted the astrological measuring tool known as an astrolabe to plot courses across the seas based on star locations. Astrologers returned the favor. They realized that if the zodiac were constantly turning, the zodiac sign rising up on the eastern horizon at the moment of birth would have the characteristics they had previously assigned to Aries, the beginning of the zodiac. As the constellations appear to move around the earth, the eastern horizon marks a fixed beginning of the first house. By placing a person’s sun sign in the first house, the ancients began calculating solar charts. Suddenly, astrologers had the ability to make incredibly precise predictions about the coming events in a person’s day-to-day life.

Centuries later, astrologers would modify this calculation with the precise birth time of a person. This is known as your birth chart. Since not everyone has knowledge of the exact hour and minute of the day they were born, solar charts remain a simple way to know in which astrological house other zodiac signs appear. Predictions can then be made on how people of these signs will have influence on your life.

Even more than your own birth chart, knowing where zodiac signs line up with your houses will allow you to better understand the dynamics of interpersonal relationships. Where someone’s sun sign is in relation to your sun sign can be an important indicator of the possibilities inherent in the pairing of you two. Read below for a simple calculation of the houses in your chart and what it means for your relationships across the zodiac.

astrological signs and planets

The First House

If someone has the same zodiac sign as you, he or she is in your first house. This gives your love life a consistency and intuitive understanding of how the other works, feels and loves. There may be times when the relationship just does not seem as dynamic as possible, though, so prepare to embrace the things you agree on and work through (but not necessarily change or resolve) the places in the relationship that are found wanting.

The Second House and Twelfth House

The zodiac sign that follows yours is in your second house. The zodiac sign immediately before yours is in your twelfth house, as the number of houses corresponds with the number of zodiac signs.

A person who is born in the zodiac sign that follows yours is more likely to be your financial supporter or make sure that you are taken care of. You will inspire this person and the relationship will swing between ambition that goes beyond conventional modes of expression and the absolute certainty and cold reality of paying the bills.

When his or her sun sign is in your second house, your sun sign is in this person’s twelfth house, indicating that you serve as a muse and inspiration. For example, a Gemini that dates a Cancer will likely be paying less of the bills around the apartment, but the excitement and quality of life that the Crab receives is a priceless source of inspiration, all from simply having someone from the sign of the Twin around.

The Third House and Eleventh House

When someone is born two signs after you, his or her sun sign is in your third house and your sun is in this person’s eleventh house. The combination here is quite harmonious. Someone’s sun in your third house provides a great feeling of common ground, while having your sun in your partner’s eleventh house makes you the perfect person with whom to hit the town. Imagine a Leo dating a Libra. The Lion loves being at the right place at the right time while the Libra appreciates a partner on whose arm she can be draped in public.

The Fourth House and Tenth House

Tension lurks when you are with someone whose birth sign is three signs after yours. One partner will have his or her sun in the fourth house. This is the zodiac’s location of seeking security and manifesting identity. There may be superficial affinities in this relationship that sees both partners yelling “power to the people” while one of them has a true attitude of elitism. The attraction to the strong sense of identity comes from his or her sun in your fourth house. The tenth house is the house of status. When your sun sign is located three months before your partner’s zodiac sign, things will become tense if it is assumed that your success is based on your social stature and what has been given to you rather than on your effort and what you have earned.

The Fifth House and Ninth House

When your partner’s sun sign is four signs after yours, his sun will be in your fifth house. This is the natural place for romance in the zodiac. Meanwhile, the corresponding position would put your sign in your lover’s ninth house, a place the zodiac equates with adventures of the heart. If there is a downside to this pleasant combination of astrological houses it is that the attraction could come so easily, so effortlessly, that the lack of excitement could cause you two to drift apart.

The Sixth House and Eighth House

Does someone annoy you with his or her small talk but the two of you work well together on projects? When someone’s sign is five zodiac signs after yours, this person’s sun is in your sixth house. People born under the Sun in your sixth make ideal workmates, but annoying confidants. Of course, this means your sun would be in that person’s eighth house. When your sun is in someone’s eighth house, you will either be hot or cold, desirous or disastrous, longed for or reviled. As forgettable as the sixth house relationship might be for you, your sun in a partner’s eighth house signals that person’s greatest love achievement or humiliating relationship defeat.

The Seventh House

Your seventh house is home to the zodiac sign that opposes yours. This is the astrological partnership house. You may not marry someone from the sign opposite yours, but there is a karmic destiny that will transform you if you have an extended love relationship with this person. There is both a natural ease with which you two get together and yet a tension in being seen as the destiny of the other instead of an equal to him or her. You may not have exactly met your match, but the house system will measure your success in romance by how well you adapt to the lessons you learn with such a karmic mate.

Father in law in astrology - How will be your In Laws

Ever feel like the romantic relationship you're currently in is eerily reminiscent of those from your past? In cases like this, you may have to admit to yourself that it's actually not them—it's you. Or, to be more cosmically specific, it might be your 7th house in astrology, which focuses on long-term partnerships. Depending on the sign(s) in your 7th house, you may even be able to predict certain cosmic-sanctioned patterns of conflict.

"The 7th house rules relationships and how we partner with people," says astrologer Corina Crysler. "Unlike the 5th house, where sex, pleasure, and what we desire in another person lives, the 7th house is known as the house of marriage and committed or contractual partnering. It can also show us what we need in our relationships or the patterns we continue to have in our relationships."

And to be clear, while the 7th house in astrology can often pertain to romantically partnered situations, it can also provide intel regarding business unions and creative collaborations. "The 7th house can show us who we decided to connect with and what we may see in others that could reflect what we see in ourselves," says Crysler. "We can use the aspects of this house to reveal how we are with others and how our interactions may influence our own lives."

Before we dive deeper into breaking down the 7th house in astrology, though, let's do a quick refresh on astrological houses and how they correspond with planets and signs: Understand planets as forces that dwell in houses, signs as the personality the planets wear every day, and houses as where the traits of those signs express themselves. To learn the placements of your houses, consult your natal chart (or use an online generator like this one). Then, learn what signs in a certain house—like the 7th house, below—can mean for you.

Ready to learn how to use the 7th house in astrology to get insight into your relationship patterns? Below, Crysler breaks down what to expect, by sign.

Aries in the 7th house

Aries rules over the 1st house, the house of self, and since the 7th house rules relationships with others, this can be a conflicting placement. Don't be surprised if selfishness has been a problem in previous relationships. That said, a good partner for you exists, and it's someone who allows you breathing room you need.

"You will require your independence and ability to take charge of your life," says Crysler. "You will need a flexible partner who is willing to take risks with you. In other words, they must be willing to 'enjoy the ride.'"

Taurus in the 7th house

Because the 7th house in astrology is all about committed partnerships, a fixed sign like Taurus feels very at home there; Taurus is all about long-lasting, loyal, committed relationships

"Taurus builds their foundation on stability, trust, and values the ones they love," says Crysler. "You will be able to create beauty and sensuality in your relationship when you feel grounded; however, try to learn to compromise and not always dig your heels deeply into the ground when things do not go your way. You may lose out on opportunities for love because you are too stubborn to admit you're wrong."

Gemini in the 7th house

With social butterfly Gemini in the 7th house, natural business partnerships will follow. You're beloved because you know how to make people feel good. You're inquisitive and curious about how to get to know others better, so you're the perfect date and good at dating.

"Communication will be key for your relationships, and you will need a partner who will intellectually stimulate you—otherwise you will be bored," says Crysler. "You will also be bored if your day-to-day routine is the same. Perhaps your emotional availability may need some tweaking, by getting out of your head and into your body."

Cancer in the 7th house

You might have an emotional nature, and need a partner who is nurturing, patient, and willing to cradle your tender heart. Just know that there's a fine line between being caring and the caretaker.

"Resentment can be something that slowly creeps into your relationships," Crysler says. "Make sure you know what you are seeking before you become committed to someone."

Leo in the 7th house

This placement can be filled with pleasure, warmth, and happiness. You're extremely generous in your relationships, and you like to feel appreciated in how you take care of others—and you like your attention and generosity to be reciprocated.

"You will need to be the star in your relationship, and sometimes your own insecurities may be taken out on those you love," says Crysler. "Do not go down the path of self-doubt, as it will cause issues in long-lasting relationships. Try not to get burdened by all day-to-day responsibilities, and allow yourself to ask your partner to pitch in and help you."

Virgo in the 7th house

Virgo in the 7th house has a caring energy in relationships that prioritizes the well-being of others.

"You tend to have a healing hand and a capacity to extend that in your relationships," Crysler says. "You will need a practical partner who can live with a certain amount of structure; however, perfectionism is both unattainable and boring, so try to accept people for who they are. Learn to let go of past disappointment and not bring it into current relationships."

Libra in the 7th house

"This is the natural position for the 7th house, so relationships will come with ease and be an important piece of your joy and contentment," Crysler says. "A possible pattern for this 7th house is you tend to lose your own identity to suit the needs of others. Make sure you know your nonnegotiables and don't compromise what you are seeking in your relationships."

Likewise, even though you want to avoid confrontation at all costs, be sure to communicate.

Scorpio in the 7th house

"Scorpio’s energy to seek the unknown makes this 7th house somewhat challenging for others, depending on their partners' needs," says Crysler. "Scorpio loves intimacy and will need this to express their love or desires through connecting on a physical level with their partners, which can often mean they are a great sexual partner."

Physical intimacy aside, Scorpio in the 7th house tends to withdraw, retreat, and put up walls, which can make well-rounded intimacy necessary for relationships tough to create. "The mysterious aspects of this sign can sometimes make it hard for others to get close to them," says Crysler. "Once trust is established, the relationship can be much more meaningful. Beware of jealousy or passiveness."

Sagittarius in the 7th house

"Sagittarius ultimately needs to feel free," says Crysler. "This 7th-house sign is willing to explore things that may not suit everyone. Long-distance relationships may be a typical for this sign, as the adventure will be appealing and fun."

To help ensure these relationships last, be aware of and intentional with your word choice, which can skew biting. You might also want to steer clear of Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces love interests. "A dominant water-sign partner will get easily hurt, and might not be the best suited for you if you don't understand their emotional needs," Crysler says.

Capricorn in the 7th house

"Business partnerships will come natural to this 7th house placement," says Crysler. "Loyalty will be a core value, making you a loving and committed partner; however, feeling responsible for others may become a burden and take away some of the magic and pleasurable aspects of your relationships."

Likewise, you may skew guarded, which may cause recurring conflict with anyone trying to get close. "Pay attention to the walls you put up around being vulnerable to someone," Crysler says. "You do not have control when it comes to love, so the sooner you learn to let your guard down and just enjoy it the happier you will be."

Aquarius in the 7th house

"This 7th house has their head in the clouds, and sometimes their emotions can run astray, making them unaware of how they can easily detach," says Crysler. "This is another sign that needs their independence. Too many rules in a relationship won't work, you'll get bored and check out. Your independence and staying true to who you are will be important, so you need a partner who can be accepting of that."

Pisces in the 7th house

"This 7th house is very caring, loving, and all about the romance," Crysler says. "You require affection and intimacy, as it will be your love language."

But, don't forget to give yourself some much-needed solo time—even if you don't realize how important it actually is for you. "Even though you would prefer to cuddle up to your partner most of the time, codependency may become an issue."

House astrology relationship

Type of Relationships by House (4th through 9th)

Relationships are Essential for Fulfillment

In our natal chart, at least one half of our horoscope (the Western hemisphere) has to do with relationships with other people.

This suggests that the key ingredient for growth and fulfillment is through our relationship with others. Without meaningful relationships, it is difficult to get our needs met, and we live without the vital nutrients for personal development.

Type of Relationships by 4th thru 9th Houses

Let’s look at each of the houses in the Western hemisphere to see what needs are being fulfilled through each kind of relationship:

  • 4th house (home, family): In this life area, your need is to experience and provide nourishment, protection, and unconditional support to the closest circle in your life, which you may call a family.
  • 5th house (children, love affair): Through loving your children, romantic partner, or your audience, you get to express your passion, enthusiasm, humor and creativity to others – showing you at your best. You may also be in the receiving end of other people’s passionate interest and creativity.
  • 6th house (work, cooperation): You get to experience self confidence and show/increase your competence through working with others for the common goal, most often in your work. The experience of being taught first-hand by a skillful mentor is also a part of this house.
  • 7th house (partnership): Here you gain self knowledge through the mirror of relationships. There is support and encouragement from others to help you be the best “you” possible. In other words, these are people that “get” you, and vice versa.
  • 8th house (healing): There is a potential to experience deep healing and well being through alternative healing methods or counseling. It’s often about releasing emotional wounds. In turn you may help heal others emotionally or physically.
  • 9th house (higher education, religion, publishing): You get to expand your mind, find life direction, or gain a new worldview through the relationship symbolized here. You may meet a deeply influential spiritual teacher, or a favorite author/professor/scholar that profoundly impact your mindset. In turn you may provide such mind expanding opportunities for others through sharing your knowledge.

Planets in Your Relationship Houses

Venus in one of the relationship houses imply an important connection (or connections) to be found in that area. A musician may have Venus in 6th house (working together with others to create art), whereas an aspiring yoga student may find her Venus in the 9th house of philosophy, spirituality and internationalism.

Saturn in a relationship house can suggest several things: 1) You tend to be quite self reliant in that area, and experience relative isolation as a result. 2) You tend to attract older or serious (i.e. Saturnian) people in that life area. 3) You’re somehow going to play the role of Saturn, i.e. the wise teacher, in that area for others.

Pluto in a relationship house can suggest profound emotional experience in that life area. A lot of repressed emotions may be brought up as a result of the relationship suggested by the house. Another possibility is that the relationship represented by that house is very intense, emotionally.

As a personal example, I have Mercury and Pluto in the 7th house, and naturally I have a life coach (both Plutonian and Mercurial) that I see regularly, which is having a profound impact on my growth (Both planets are in Libra in my chart, which learns better through relationships.) This investment in turn helps me to help others through astrological consultation, in which case I’m using the Mercury-Pluto energy for the sake of others’ benefit.

Other Indicators

If most of the planets fall in the Western (right) side of the horoscope, chances are that too much energy is being given to others, and not enough for your own well being.

If most of the planets are in the Eastern (left) side of the chart, there could be a tendency to defend and withdraw into the self (i.e. too much energy goes to protect the Ascendant), which is another way to be out of balance. You could still link to the relationship houses through the planets’ rulership connections (i.e. which planet rules the 7th house, etc.) and arrive at similar interpretations.

Conclusion

A difficulty in one or more of the relationship houses will profoundly impact your level of happiness and personal growth. At the same time, these very difficulties may provide the opportunity for you to heal the wounds that you may have been carrying for a long time.

If you feel that some of these houses are not at all activated in your life, but you see planets in it, then that may be a cue to start looking for new connections in that area, or to find ways to be more deeply involved with others. Usually the planet within a house also represents the kind of person you’ll attract.

If you relate strongly to your natal planetary placements in the relationship houses, please feel free to share your experience in the comment section.

Planets In Synastry: A Beginner’s Guide To Relationship Astrology

Important Aspects in Synastry
Any interaction between the Sun, Moon, Ascendant, Venus or Mars tends to create a strong attraction between the two people involved. Aspects between Venus and Mars in particular indicate sexual attraction. While harsh aspects between Venus and Mars are more likely to create a strong sexual attraction, they are also more likely to present obstacles and challenges in the relationship. Trine and sextile aspects between these planets create a harmonious blending of energies, however, sometimes the relationship seems too comfortable and excitement may be lacking.Aspects between the Moon and Venus or Mars indicate whether the two people involved are emotionally in tune with each other. Tense aspects, such as the square or opposition, can put a strain on the relationship, preventing two people from relating to each other on an intimate level. Harmonious aspects, such as the trine or sextile, make the interaction easy and comfortable; the partners usually have enough in common to sustain a relationship and are able to form a deep, emotional bond.Houses
In synastric analysis, the interplay of houses between two charts determines what role the individuals have cast each other with regard to the planets involved. When comparing birth charts in synastry, planets in the 1st, 5th, 7th and 8th houses are the most important because these houses possess a relationship theme. If some of your planets fall in the 1st, 5th, 7th or 8th house of your partner’s chart or vice versa, an intimate partnership is indicated. Here is a brief explanation of what each of these houses represent in synastry:
