How to Stop Tumblr From Resizing Images

iJustin Sullivan/Getty Images News/Getty Images

With upwards of 100 million posts per day, Tumblr provides an outlet for uploading and sharing photos, among other media. The social site's default settings are at odds with the highest-quality digital photos, however -- most Tumblr themes automatically resize large-format images to 500 by 750 pixels. Though viewers can click on a resized photo to view a somewhat larger version, you can also change your Tumblr theme or implement just a bit of basic coding to display your pics in all their high-res glory from the outset.

The Easy Way

Click the gear-shaped “Settings” icon after logging in to your Tumblr blog with your user name and password.

Click the “Customize” button under the “Theme” heading in the Settings menu.

Click the “Themes” button. From the drop-down menu, choose the “Hi-res” category. This action presents you with a variety of pre-made themes custom tailored to display high-resolution photos. Unlike themes in other categories, hi-res themes will not resize your photos. Select the hi-res theme of your choice by clicking it and press the “Use” button, then the “Save” button to finalize your selection.

The HTML Way

Choose your current theme from your Tumblr's Themes menu then click the “Edit HTML” button, which causes your page's HTML code to appear.

Find a part of the code, known as a “tag,” that says “{block:Photo}.” On a Windows computer, you can find it by pressing “CTRL+F” and typing the text you wish to locate. When you find the tag, you'll see a block of text -- typically of about two lines -- between it and an end tag, “{/block:Photo}.” The "{block:Photo}" tag is the only text you need to edit.

Delete the tag that reads “<span class=“photo”>” and the closing tag, “</span>.” These tags, found within the “{block:Photo}” tags, are responsible for re-sizing your Tumblr images.

Identify the text “{PhotoURL-500}.” Change the text to case-sensitive “{PhotoURL-HighRes}.”

Click the “Update Changes” button then the “Save” button to save your changes. Editing your HTML in this way retains the look of your current Tumblr theme; you can now upload photos at a high resolution without any re-sizing.

Tumblr only accepts images in GIF, JPEG and PNG file formats. Even with a hi-res theme or custom HTML, static images must be smaller than 10MB while animated GIFs must fall under 1MB.

If you make a mistake with the HTML, re-implement your theme by accessing Tumblr's theme's menu, choosing the original theme from the list and pressing the “Use” button.

A Good Resolution for Tumblr Picture Posts

By Ashley Poland

Tumblr enables you to post important photos.

Tumblr is designed for simplicity, eliminating the need for you to think about technical details like resolution and image file size. However, if you don't want Tumblr to resize your photos automatically or you simply want to optimize your upload process, there are some resolutions and tips to keep in mind.

For the Dashboard

The magic number for the dashboard is 500: all posts are 500 pixels wide, and as such, all photos are resized to fit that width. Since most content on Tumblr is viewed on the dashboard, it's the most logical place to optimize. Tumblr's documentation recommends setting photos at 500 by 750 pixels, as this size fits with the dashboard and most themes used on Tumblr.

Photosets are posts that include up to 10 images. Tumblr offers various photoset layouts to use when creating a photoset. These layouts use varying image sizes, with some images displayed at the full 500 pixels wide and others scaled down to 250 pixels. While the photos may be displayed smaller on the dashboard, users will see them at full size when they click the image. Therefore, resizing the pictures to be smaller than 500 pixels is not recommended.

In Themes

If more of your images are viewed on your individual page, check that your theme doesn't use an image size larger than 500 pixels; scaling the image up can make the image appear blurry. Tumblr's theming allows for developers to set photo posts to use the high-resolution version of the photo if one is available, or even to go smaller than 500 pixels. While 500 is fine for most themes, it's better to go with a larger image if your theme requires it.

High Resolution

Under specific circumstances, you can include a larger version of a photo that users can see if they click the photo. Clicking to see the larger version only works if you have not set a click-through link on the photo. The high-definition version of the photo can be up to 1280 pixels wide and 1920 pixels tall.

Does Tumblr reduce quality?

Still, if the images you’re uploading are losing quality, that’s most likely because they exceed the recommended size. When this happens, Tumblr renders the image for a lower quality. However, you may sometimes even be unable to upload the image at all if it exceeds that limit.

Why are my GIFs blurry on Tumblr?

If you upload images wider than the dashboard allows for, Tumblr will automatically create a resized version to display on the dashboard. Still images can lose sharpness and appear blurry as a result of the resizing, while animated GIFs may lose their animation altogether and be displayed as still images instead.

For Unquestionable Best Image QualityTIF LZW or PNG (lossless compression, and no JPG artifacts)

Maximum Compatibility: Windows, Mac, UnixTIF or JPG

What has better quality JPEG or PNG?

In general, PNG is a higher-quality compression format. JPG images are generally of lower quality, but are faster to load. These factors affect whether you decide to use PNG or JPG, as does what the image contains and how it will be used.

Which is better JPEG or TIFF?

When editing an image, consider saving it as a TIFF, instead of a JPEG file. TIFF files are larger, but will not lose any quality or clarity when edited and saved repeatedly. JPEGs, on the other hand, will lose a small amount of quality and clarity each time they are saved.

How to make blurry aesthetic photos!! #Shorts

I’ve honestly never understood this.

I only resize my pictures because I take them at huge resolutions (upwards of 4k), and I resize them down to ~1440p simply for file size and uploading bandwidth purposes (so my final pictures I upload to tumblr are around 1-7mb in size, as opposed to anywhere from 15-60+mb).

My pictures look just fine.

In terms of maximum height, the only rule I’ve come across is that when placing 2 or 3 pictures next to each other they should be of similar height or the taller ones will be cropped and not display properly.

Edit: A couple of other points –

If you’re uploading pictures that are smaller than tumblr’s default dashboard width they will be upscaled to fit and will look awful. Larger images will be downscaled and downscaling is the same as downsampling and it’s something that makes pictures look better, not worse. When I take pictures at 4k+ resolutions it’s because when they are displayed on 1080p or 1440p screens they look a lot cleaner and less jaggy and have more pixel information to show more detail. Downsampling is good. Downsampling is the holy grail of screenarchery.

When you’re saving your pictures in Photoshop, make sure you choose Save As and NOT Save for Web. Your image quality will be better.

Do NOT repeatedly save your images as jpg. Jpg is a lossy format, which means each time you save it compresses the image in a way that a little bit of information is lost. The more times you save the same image, the more damage is done, and you will see compression artifacts start to appear. If you want to save as jpg for the smaller file size, leave it until you have your absolute final version of the image.

In the meantime, save your progress using PSD (Photoshop’s own proprietary format, which allows you to save layers as well), or PNG, which is a lossless format. File sizes will be larger, but no information will be lost. You can save repeatedly in PNG format without losing image quality. PNG files are larger than JPG files, but you can upload images up to 10mb in size to tumblr, so as long as they aren’t too big you’ll be fine.

If you upload small pictures to tumblr, you lose out on all the benefits of being able to use the lightbox feature. This means you miss out on seeing a larger version of your picture or pictures, and lose so much of that gorgeous detail that you spent so long trying to capture.

If you upload small pictures to tumblr it means you’re stuck using a narrow tumblr theme. Narrow themes suck. They usually come with tiny font sizes, and are generally pretty inaccessible. I remember the days when web design was all about accessibility. Oh how I wish we would return to those days. Once people have to start hitting the zoom key to enlarge your blog because they can’t read it all your pictures are going to look fuzzy and shit anyway.
