The s and early s were the golden age of pony cars. Among the popular muscle cars that ruled the roads then, the Plymouth Barracuda, or more affectionately known as the 'Cuda, had gained popularity among the general population.

But this Cuda up for sale on Mecum Auctions isn't any ordinary Plymouth muscle car. It's a rare one in many levels – one of the 12 Hemi Cuda Convertibles produced in (seven for the US, five for export); one of the only three examples equipped with factory A four-speed manual transmission; and the only Hemi Cuda Convertible that comes in Winchester Gray.

While already one-of-a-kind based on the traits mentioned above, this particular Hemi Cuda Convertible has a story to tell that makes it even more desirable.

According to the Mecum Auctions listing, this car was exported to France for the original owner, Jean Teyssier. After two decades, it returned to the US with its original drivetrain still intact in It remained in possession of its current owner for the last two decades, complete with the original broadcast sheet, original French title, and copies of import documents. Of course, its original Hemi engine is still intact, producing healthy horses.

We can't deny the homecoming story of this Hemi Cuda, but what's worth noting is that its odometer only clocked in 98, kilometers (61, miles). In case you're wondering, yes, it comes with a metric odometer since it's part of the production destined for export.

As you would have guessed and as what the headline above suggests, this storied and rare pony car is expected to fetch some amount. In fact, Mecum Auctions estimates that it can meet the hammer at $ million to $ million making it worthy of its main attraction designation in next week's auction. Here it is folks, the mother of all Mopars! Don't pass up this chance to own a true piece of Mopar historya fully documented (body VIN stampings match, 2 fender tags and 2 original build sheets), highly optioned, Plymouth Cuda, ci Hemi, Torqflite automatic tranny, original 8 3/4 rear-end w/ gears and Sure Grip posi, original Houndstouth, original front and rear elastomeric bumpers, and painted in it's factory original Tor Red (Plymouth name for Hemi Orange) EV2 paint code. Let me start by saying that I am a private Mopar collector and not a dealerI have a few other Mopars. The ONLY REASON I am considering selling this car is because I am upgrading to a higher dollar car. That said, I will not give the car away and I don’t have to sell it. I know what it's worth and what I paid for it 2 years ago. Since then, I have put an additional $5k in the carlittle details, making sure everything works on the car etc. If you are a tire-kicker, a dealer looking to consign/store/list and sell my car, a dreamer who can't wire me the moneyplease don't call or email. History/Documentation: I have a clean Ohio title in hand for the car. The car comes with 2 original broadcast sheets in mint condition and I have enclosed those pictures. I am also including the appraisal that was executed when restoration was complete in and it was valued at $, I know the market has come down a bit, thus the current listing price. I bought the car here in Ohio. This car was purchased from the previous owner out of California, who fully restored the car from There is a pile 3” thick that includes ALL of the receipts for every part that was replaced or repaired and I will include them in the deal. The gentlemen who executed the restoration in California had a simple goal: restore this 71 Cuda back to its original specs on the fender tag/build sheets, upgrade the block to a beefier Hemi, and make it street reliable to drive everyday in California weather. This car is factory original, to a tee…except for the 2 major upgrades: the Hemi and the Shaker hood….cool additions, I might add! When the factory issued block and tranny were blown long ago, the owner took the car in an awesome direction. Although we don’t have the original driveline, this thing is bullet proof and wicked fast! The original fender tags (it had 2 from the factory due to being a highly optioned car) are on the car and the codes are listed for you below. I have tried to include a picture of the VIN and the matching stamping on the firewall, but it’s a bit blurry. I also have both original broadcast sheets for you, in order to back up the factory issued direction of the car. I have listed the fender tag codes below for you, just in case anything is illegible in the pictures: Tag 1: M21 M25 M31 M88 N41 CTD J78 J81 L25 L31 L34 C55 G11 G36 H51 J45 J54 EV2 H5XV E65 D32 BS23N1B Tag 2: N42 R11 V61 26 EN2 BS23N1B Restoration/Paint/Body: On a scale of (and I'm a tough critic), this car is a 2+. Why is it not a because I put my kids in it and drive it to local Mopar car showsit gets driven a little. Not banged oncruised with 2 little kids in the back. In my mind, it would be a 1 if it were a total trailer queen. The paint job is 8 years old, but it looks awesomeas you can see in the attached pictures. There are 2 spots the size of a fingernail that we touched up because someone nicked the paintnothing major. One is on the hood and another is back by the driver’s side back bumper. I'm telling you because I'm not the guy who likes surprises, not because they are a big deal. Most people may not even notice them. The car had all of the chrome re-dipped or replaced. Look closely at the pictures….the chrome isn’t pitted and it’s flawless! This is a rare rubber bumper car and they are in great shape. These grills and the gills on this car are typically broken or damaged….none of that here. The car was equipped with a space saver spare and the correct jacks are in the trunk as well. I have nothing to hide herethis is a beautiful car! Interior: All original interior with new Legendary skins. All interior parts, decals, and knobs were replaced or re-chromed to look like new…..stunning. The gages were professionally rebuilt during the restoration and they are functional. Rare, orange Houndstooth bucket seats look awesome! The reverse light and dome light even work! Nothing is cracked, broken, etc. The dashboard is a new Just Dashes unit and not warped, etc. This was an automatic car so with that wood-grained console and Slapstick shifter, staring you straight in the face. This was a high-optioned, bucket seat car with new carpet, a rim-blow steering wheel etc. The window cranks are spotless, etc. All factory seat belts are in the car and functional. The radio is an original Chrysler AM/FM radio, rebuilt with modern electronics to handle the cd changer that he added in the trunkand it all works too. The previous owner wanted to add the ability to take the car on long trips and cruise with a lot of tunes. This was a tastefully placed upgrade that gives the car an additional creature comfort. Driveline: As stated earlier, this car does not have the original driveline. If you haven’t done so already, when you check the VIN you’ll find out that it was originally a car. This wasn’t a BH car that had a ….this was a factory issued, big-block Cuda that got a HUGE upgrade with the new Hemi. I have included a copy of one of the many receipts that shows the previous owner spent over $17k…just to buy the new Hemi block and the parts. So, the car now has a Mopar crate Hemi that was blueprinted, ported, and polished by Ollie Hellert Racing Engines. It now produces horsepower with OE Dual quad intake and correct valve covers. This car rumbles with new TTI headers, 3” TTI exhaust, H pipe, and 3” TTI tips The 8 ¾”, Sure Grip posi rear end was rebuilt and does its job well. All suspension components have been replaced and the shocks were upgraded to KYB replacements with new bushings throughout and original sway bar. The front suspension was completely rebuilt with all new components. Steer and Gear ultra firm feel steering box performs well. Although the car is driven, it looks quite nice underneath with all of these new parts. The wheels and tires are new 15x7 ralleys in the front and 15x8 ralleys in the rear with /60/15 and /60/15 tires in the front and rear. Then it was detailed with the correct parts like: hoses, clamps, regulator, altenator, fasteners, brackets, hold downs, wire looms, etc. The repro battery is a prop for these photos. A new auto parts store battery is included with the car. The exhaust consists of original NOS mufflers, resonators and pipes. Tires are correct reproduction GoodYear Polyglass GTs. Ride is handled by NOS Oriflow date code correct shocks. They shocks are few and far between. Collectors have paid thousands of dollars for shocks like these. Interior Restoration: The dash pad is perfect, the rally dash cluster looks like new without a scratch and no fading. The heater control panel lettering is like new. This auction is for a factory original 1 of 28 bbl automatic Cuda convertibles. It currently has a pistal grip hemi 4spd in it, but comes with the factory original automatic transmission. The car is a dependable cruise night car that has older body and paint work from the late seventies or early eighties. Not a show car, but a fun, strong running original and rare car you can still drive and not worry about that looks good. It does not have the original motor, but does have a warranty replacement motor. The shaker hood and rear luggage rack are the only options added to this car that are not on the broadcast sheet. This car is the only Dana automatic "U" code automatic Cuda convertible original from Plymouth. The other 27 "U" code Cuda convertibles ALL had the smaller /4 rear ends. I have the original Broadcast sheet and some original dealership paperwork including the original dealership, salesman, and buyer info and when they bought and picked up the car. Below are options that came on the car and are documented on the factory broadcast sheet: BBL H.P. motor, with console automatic transmission. It appears to have suffered some front end damage and the inner fenders were replaced with NOS inner fenders and some work done to the passenger side firewall around the blower motor. The vin # still shows where stamped from the factory on the top of the cowl as well as on the front upper rad. support. The car does run and drive VERY well and is very fast, nothing like gears to wakeup any car! I put over miles on it this past summermostly miles at a time. I do have a very clean correct dual scoop rally hood that would go with the car. 71 CUDA BS23N was purchased 12 years ago with the original long gone. When I set out to have this cuda restored, I had the mind set that I was going to live forever. Nothing but the best was used starting with the ci mopar hemi breathing through TTI exhaust headers. The sound of this car with that huge cam is awesome. The power of ft lbs of torque is crazy fast. Next I choose a keisler 5 speed trans bolted to a new dana 60 axle with gears. All springs and bushings were replaced as well as almost everything else on this car. The wheels are new. No expense was spared. Interior was % replaced. All gauges were sent out for restoration as well as a new solid state replica stereo was installed. The curious yellow paint was done by the best shop I know of and it shows, the paint job is flawless. This cuda was restored 2 years ago and has miles since restoration. If your looking to drive the best with the perfect color combination then this car is for you.
