Purium Ingredients and Side Effects

Here is some select ingredients found in Purium brands:

Rice Bran SolublesSpirulinaWheat Grass JuiceLou Han GuoOrganic Rooibos Extract
Black Walnut HullMarshmallow RootCloveWormwoodAmalaki
Cascara Sagrada BarkSenna LeafOrganic Activated BarleyOrganic Alfalfa Leaf Juice PowderOrganic Apple Flavor

Spirulina: Algae used due to its high nutrient content. It’s highly advised to ensure that this ingredient comes from a clean source, as there have been issues with contaminations from unclean waters.

Potential contaminations can promote toxic buildup in the form of heavy metals such as lead. This may cause:

  • Immune system damage, fatigue, and weakness.
  • Diarrhea, muscle cramps, and vomiting.
  • Headaches, organ damage, and death.

Our review experts have crafted a list of the top ranked weight loss diets.

Black Walnut Hull: This extract contains tannins which can be used to reduce swelling and pain. Web MD adds:

“POSSIBLY UNSAFE when applied directly to the skin”

Therefore handling of this must be exercised with caution.  Little information exists about how to properly handle it.

Wormwood: Herb that can stimulate the central nervous system. If it contains an extract called thujone it may be unsafe. Possible side effects can include:

  • Vomiting, dizziness, and thirst.
  • Paralysis, numbness, and seizure.
  • Muscle breakdown, insomnia, and nightmares.
  • Kidney damage, tremors, and death.

It’s unknown if the makers of Purium ensure their wormwood is free of the potentially harmful thujone.

Amalaki: More commonly known as Indian gooseberry. It is used to reduce cholesterol and triglycerides.  Some studies have shown a potential for liver damage.

Cascara Sagrada Bark: This shrub is used to promote laxative effects. With repeat use longer than one week it may lead to side effects in the form of:

  • Low levels of electrolytes, dehydration, and muscle fatigue.
  • Heart issues, thirst, and nausea.
  • Bloody diarrhea, vomiting, and stomach pain.
  • Indigestion, increased bathroom use, and cramps.

This ingredient was also banned by the FDA as use of an over the counter or prescription laxative in 2002.

Senna Leaf: Herb that irritates the bowels to promote laxative like effects. Web MD adds:

“POSSIBLY UNSAFE when taken in by mouth long-term or in high doses. Don’t use senna for more than two weeks”

Possible side effects can include:

  • Muscle fatigue, unhealthy balance of electrolytes, and liver damage.
  • Heart malfunction, dehydration, and many other harmful effects.

It is also common for people to experience stomach cramps while taking senna.

EDITOR’S TIP: Combine this diet with a proven meal replacement such as 18 Shake ffor better results.

Purium Quality of Ingredients

Many of these ingredients have concerns due to potential side effects. A major issue with these products is that they’re not all necessary. The amino acids for example can be substituted with a protein rich meal, and electrolytes are also found commonly are not essential to most.

Their meal replacement shake has only 5 grams of protein per serving, which makes it incredibly low and likely not rich enough in amino acids that the body needs.

They also include many laxatives like ingredients which can lead to digestive issues and are not intended for repeat use. These kinds of ingredients are only added as it’s likely one will experience constipation while on the 10 day fast.

The comprehensive 10 day kit also requires one to eat nothing but shakes, pills, and liquid formulas. This may not be appetizing and only provides a limited amount of calories.

The Price and Quality of Purium

The comprehensive 10-day transformation kit sells for $205. It includes a shaker bottle, gym bag, shake, amino acid pills, liquid antioxidant blend, herbal detox blends, and an electrolyte blend.

One thing not explained in the marketing of this plan is that you’re meant to only eat and drink what they offer. This is a very low calorie diet and can be extremely difficult to follow. They provide a chart which mentions what one will feel which includes:

  • Fear, anger, resentment, and they claim it offers acceptance and happier feelings.

They also advise to exercise caution and to only use it if one is healthy enough to do this kind of fast. While one product should be taken every 2 hours, it can be extremely difficult to follow and may promote serious side effects. This is especially true in people who have no experience in fasting.

Due to the low protein and calories it may produce many difficult side effects. Relying on this program for fasting may be potentially harmful and unreliable for long lasting weight loss. Click the link here to view the list of the highest rated weight loss diets.

Greatly reducing calories has also not been proven as a safe and effective weight loss approach. Web MD adds:

“can also cause all kinds of health problems, including muscle loss”

“initial weight lost on fast is primarily fluid or “water weight”, not fat”

So it’s likely that any results on the scale won’t be solely fat but also important muscle and tissue.

Business of Purium

The name of the company is Purium Health Products and their contact information is:

Phone Number: (888) 747-6733

Address: 1392 Sarah Place Unit B

Ontario, California 91761

Email: [email protected]

Very little information exists about the company. They do currently have a low D + rating on their Better Business Bureau account. One customer had this to say about the company practices:

“keeping my product and not refunding me… That is theft and 100% illegal”

They mention in their FAQ section that before starting their weight loss transformation program that one should consult a physician before starting their 10 day transformation. For a list of the top ranked weight loss diets, click on the link featured.

Customer Opinions of Purium

Featured are select reviews from users:

“most of the positive reviews are from distributors… I ended up in the hospital and my blood sugar, electrolytes, and few other things were dangerously low”

“You can’t live off those expensive junk forever. It made me feel gross”

“Tried it twice and both times I felt nauseous. It tastes awful”

“Yeah you’ll lose weight but only because you’re starving yourself. Their cleanse shake is revolting and tastes disgusting”

There were many problems according to customers. People often mentioned that they experienced side effects and that they couldn’t drink the shake. It caused some to gag and for many it was impossible to drink no matter what they mixed it with.

Side effects people experienced included headaches, nausea, indigestion, stomach cramps, low blood sugar, increased bathroom usage, diarrhea, extreme thirst, insomnia, reduced electrolytes, fatigue and an inability to function normally.

A few were hospitalized due to the extreme side effects experienced. People actually collapsed and had to be transported to the hospital while doing the 10 day transformation. To learn about which weight loss diets were rated as the best overall, follow the link here.

Conclusion – Does Purium Work?

Purium products are described as wholesome but many of these have no purpose other than to support people on fasts. This includes electrolytes and amino acid blends which are used to substitute the natural minerals and vitamins found in foods. Many customers have complained of not just a lack of weight loss, but also of extreme side effects. A few were hospitalized due to serious complications caused by the necessary fasting. There’s no evidence provided to ensure that relying on these products for weight loss is safe and effective.

In analyzing many kinds of weight loss diets our review experts found that the 18Shake Diet produced the best results. It offers a meal replacement for hours of appetite suppression and a fat burning diet pill. Both are made with high quality ingredients and no stimulants, fillers, binders, preservatives, colors, or any unwanted additives. Customers have also left reviews and testimonials to showcase its potent effects. The benefits of this diet is that it can improve metabolism, burn fat, keep blood sugar stable, and promote overall wellbeing.

The company produces their ingredients in a GMP certified facility to ensure 3rd party inspections and routine quality. Discover more about the 18Shake Diet by clicking the link here.

What Is the Purium Diet?

At Verywell, we believe there is no one-size-fits-all approach to a healthy lifestyle. Successful eating plans need to be individualized and take the whole person into consideration. Prior to starting a new diet plan, consult with your healthcare provider or a registered dietitian, especially if you have an underlying health condition.

The Purium diet is a 10- or 30-day cleanse that promises to increase your energy, improve sleep, and reset your metabolism. Proponents of the program claim it can help you lose up to 20 pounds.

Purium was co-founded in 2004 by David Sandoval and Amy Venner-Hamdi. While both have worked in the nutrition and wellness space, neither is a registered dietician or certified nutritionist.

Purium is a multi-level marketing company that sells shakes, supplements, powders, and other products related to diet, detoxing, and weight loss. Meal replacement shakes, supplements and minimal fruits and vegetables make up the "Ten-Day Cleansing" program, which is a shortened version of the "30-Day Ultimate Lifestyle Transformation" plan.

While both diets are only meant to last for a set duration, neither are likely to promote sustainable weight loss. Nor do they teach healthy eating and lifestyle habits.

What Experts Say

"The Purium diet is a very-low-calorie plan which promises quick weight loss. It consists of just 600 calories a day, which experts warn is not healthy or sustainable. Even over just 10 days, people may experience side effects like fatigue and irritability."
Chrissy Carroll, RD, MPH

What Can You Eat?

Those who follow the 10-day plan can expect to consume three shakes a day, supplements every few hours, and a tart-cherry drink at the end of the day. The plan also allows for small portions of "flex foods." You may drink up to 72 ounces of water daily, along with some other approved beverages. The 30-day plan is similar, with the exception that just two out of three meals are Purium-based.

What You Need to Know

The Purium 10-day cleanse for weight loss claims to activate the hormone adiponectin to burn fat, build muscle, and aid the body in detoxifying and cleansing the digestive tract.

According to Purium, its shakes and supplements flood the body with nutrient-dense, low-calorie superfoods, helping to break addictions to foods containing sugar, salt, carbohydrates, and chemicals. On the 10-day cleanse, you'll consume about 600 calories a day.

The meal replacement shakes and supplements are spread out at two-hour intervals. Here's what a typical schedule on the 10-day plan might look like if you wake up at 7 a.m. Flex foods or beverages can be consumed at any three of these intervals.

  • 7 a.m.: 2 tablets Super Amino 23 and water
  • 9 a.m.: Power Shake (with 20 oz. water); 2 capsules Biome Medic; 1–2 capsules Super CleansR
  • 11 a.m.:5 tabletsSuper Amino 23 and water
  • 1 p.m.:Power Shake (with 20 oz. water); 2 capsules Biome Medic; 1–2 capsules Super CleansR
  • 3 p.m.:5 tabletsSuper Amino 23 and water
  • 5 p.m.:Power Shake (with 20 oz. water)
  • 30 to 60 minutes before bed: Apothe-Cherry (with 8–10 oz. water)

Fitness activities are not promoted in this plan. In fact, according to instructions, exercise should be limited to light walking and yoga. The instructions also recommend getting a good night's sleep each night while on the plan. Followers can also choose to have an additional flex food serving or a meal if they feel tempted to abandon the program.

Purium offers inspirational tips by text, support-group-style phone calls, and a Facebook group for people following these plans. All are optional.

The 6 Best Weight Loss Apps of 2021

What to Eat
  • Purium products

  • Certain fruits and vegetables

  • Certain flavorings

  • Certain beverages

What Not to Eat
  • Grains and starches

  • Meat, eggs, dairy products

  • Caffeine and alcohol

Purium Products

Both the 10-day and 30-day packs contain a Power Shake powder, Apothe-Cherry concentrated tart cherry juice, Super Amino 23 amino acid supplements, Biome Medic supplements for gut support, and SuperCleansR supplements to help "cleanse" the digestive tract.

Fruits and Vegetables

Three servings of a "flex food" or "flex beverage" are allowed per day. Flex foods include avocado, apple, watermelon, cucumbers, broccoli, cauliflower, kimchi, and summer squash. For most of these, the serving size is one cup.

Flavor your flex foods with organic tropical oil, freshly squeezed lemon, Himalayan sea salt, raw honey, or fresh herbs and spices.

Flex Beverages

These may be consumed alone or mixed with Power Shake powder, but they count toward the three daily servings of food or beverage: hemp, almond, coconut, or oat milk; kombucha; organic vegetable broth; decaffeinated herbal tea; coconut water; and Purium green drinks.

Meat, Eggs, Dairy Products

Purium programs are vegan and no animal products are permitted. The instructions recommend avoiding meat, dairy, and processed foods for two to three days before beginning the cleanse.

Caffeine and Alcohol

Caffeine and alcohol are not allowed on the program, and Purium recommends withdrawing from these in the days prior to starting your cleanse (or three to five days prior for coffee).

Any food that isn't on the flex foods list is off-limits. That includes all grains, processed foods, and fruits and vegetables including bananas, potatoes, corn, and winter squash.

Pros and Cons

  • Structured plan

  • Short-term weight loss

  • Cost

  • Extremely low in calories

  • Does not teach healthy habits

  • Not supported by evidence-based research

The quick weight loss and all-inclusive packaging of Purium diet plans might seem appealing. But be aware of the drawbacks to this program.

  • Structured plan:On this eating plan, everything is prescribed and set up for you. There are few decisions to make other than what flavor of shake you want or which flex food to eat (and even in those cases, your options are quite limited).
  • Short-term weight loss:By severely restricting your calories to just 600 per day, you are almost guaranteed to lose weight.

Yasmine Ali, MD

Diets that are less than 1,200 calories per day do not provide enough energy or nutrition for the necessary, basic biological functions of an adult human.

— Yasmine Ali, MD

If you're considering this plan, you need to be aware of the many concerns associated with it.

  • Cost:The 10-day package retails for about $279, and the 30-day plan is $439. However, you can receive a discount when you sign up for a rewards program and earn points. While everything is organized and planned, it still amounts to about $11 a day, according to Purium's website.
  • Very restrictive: "Diets that are less than 1,200 calories per day do not provide enough energy or nutrition for the necessary, basic biological functions of an adult human,” says preventive cardiologist Yasmine Ali, MD, MSCI, FACC, FACP. “Plus, severe calorie restriction sends the body into starvation mode, which makes humans hold on to weight rather than continue to lose it. These diets usually backfire for that reason, as well as for the fact that they are simply unsustainable."
  • Does not teach healthy habits:When you drink meal-replacement shakes and take supplements for the majority of your daily food intake, there is no opportunity to learn healthy eating habits, smart cooking skills, or portion control. All of these are important to maintaining weight loss.

While Purium's cleanse and transformation programs promise weight loss, detoxification, and other benefits, high-quality evidence to support these benefits is lacking.

Why Detox Diets Do More Harm Than Good

Is the Purium Diet a Healthy Choice for You?

When compared to federal guidelines for a healthy, balanced diet, the Purium diet falls short. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) suggests eating a balanced mix of fruits, vegetables, protein, grains, and low-fat dairy products, and healthy fats each day. Health experts also note that it's better to get nutrients from foods vs. supplements. On the Purium diet, most of the protein you consume is from powdered shake mix and the only other solid foods you eat are fruits and vegetables.

The Purium plan is also dangerously low in calories (around 600 a day) compared to the USDA's recommendation of 1,600 to 2,200 calories a day for females and 2,200 ti 3,200 calories per day for males. The USDA recommends a reduction of 500 calories a day for a sustainable weight-loss rate of 1 to 2 pounds per week. However, daily calorie needs vary depending on your age, sex, and activity level. Use this calculator to determine a calorie target that's right for you.

Although it may claim to offer complete nutrition, the Purium diet does not meet expert advice for healthy eating.

The Basics of a Healthy, Balanced Diet

Health Benefits

Short-term weight loss is likely on the Purium diet. However, it may return quickly once you return to a normal diet. Health experts generally advise that severe calorie restriction from meal replacement shakes is not a healthy solution for long-term weight management.

Health Risks

The Purium diet claims that its products help to "detox" the body. However, this claim is not rooted in science. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) explains that while research is lacking, there isn't enough evidence to show that these programs provide any real "detox" benefit. And they may only provide some limited weight loss benefits in the short term.

In addition, severe calorie restriction can lead to fatigue and lightheadedness and even slow the body's metabolism.Very low-calorie diets (less than 1,200 calories per day) should only be followed under medical supervision. Those that follow a Purium plan for an extended amount of time could put themselves at risk for nutrient deficiencies.

"Detoxes" and "cleanses" are not recommended for anyone who has had or is at risk for developing an eating disorder, as these programs do not cultivate a healthy relationship with food.

A Word From Verywell

Most health experts agree that "detox" programs for weight loss that eliminate entire food groups or severely restrict your calorie intake are generally not successful for long-term health or weight loss. Many of these programs are not backed by scientific evidence and can be dangerous to health. These programs are generally best followed while under the supervision of a healthcare provider.

If your goal is weight loss, consider making an appointment with a registered dietitian and a personal trainer to put together a plan for sustained, healthy weight loss combined with regular exercise.

Remember, following a long-term or short-term diet may not be necessary for you and many diets out there simply don’t work, especially long-term. While we do not endorse fad diet trends or unsustainable weight loss methods, we present the facts so you can make an informed decision that works best for your nutritional needs, genetic blueprint, budget, and goals.

If your goal is weight loss, remember that losing weight isn’t necessarily the same as being your healthiest self, and there are many other ways to pursue health. Exercise, sleep, and other lifestyle factors also play a major role in your overall health. The best diet is always the one that is balanced and fits your lifestyle.

What is Purium?

Purium is a 25+ year manufacturing company focused on promoting health and wellness supplements. Supposedly, the supplements help fill in the gaps in your nutritional plan. They claim to provide quality products with nutrients, vitamins, and minerals that the body needs so customers can live a happier, healthier life.

By taking fresh, non-GMO organic foods, Purium aims to deliver a product that can not only transform our bodies but change the way we think about diet products altogether.

Purium offers a line of health and wellness products from weight-loss to detoxification and performance – even natural supplements for children.

In terms of weight loss, the company supports the idea that you can cleanse away the pounds. The Super Cleans-R that’s included in the Transformation Kit contains ingredients like marshmallow root, cascara sagrada and senna leaf. Are these ingredients that will help with weight loss?

  • Complementary Medicine Research – Most of the studies we found on marshmallow root had to do with respiratory issues and health, not weight loss or even cleansing and detoxing.
  • Journal of Dietary Supplements – In some research involving cleansing weight-loss products that included ingredients like cascara sagrada, no improvements were noted in body composition or waist circumference.
  • African Journal of Traditional, Complementary and Alternative Medicine – Senna is a natural, stimulant laxative that can come with some nasty side effects like stomach cramping and loose stools. There are forms of senna which are mild enough to cause these issues, but they are not commonly used in weight-loss or cleanse preparations.

Purium uses gift cards to help their distributors sign up recruits. The distributors hand out gift cards worth $50 that people can use to purchase the 10 Day Transformation kit. The distributors earn $50 for each voucher that is redeemed. Using gift cards is to make it easy for new distributors to sign up recruits and grow their business.

10-Day Transformation

The Purium 10-Day Transformation

f you are on social media, you’ve most likely caught wind of the Purium 10-Day Transformation.

This 10-day transformation is a program masterminded by David Sandoval. This program calls for dieters to cut sugar, gluten, caffeine, dairy, alcohol – basically all foods that aren’t on the cleanse pamphlet – and replace them with Purium shakes for ten days.

It’s rapidly picking up steam on social media, with Purium using “distributors” to promote and sell their products, much like you would see with any multi-level marketing company.

Purium Results

According to the Purium website, most people lose 5 to 20 pounds during the Purium 10-day cleanse. Purium says that, in a 2013 study, participants lost an average of 11.3 pounds in those ten days.

Out of more than a hundred product reviews, 67 users rated Purium with four stars or higher. However, a whole quarter of those reviews were the lowest, 1-star.

The Mayo Clinic also disputes the significance and long-term effects of a weight-loss cleanse/detox, “there’s little evidence that detox diets remove toxins from the body. If you’re considering a detox diet, get the OK from your doctor first. It’s also important to consider possible side effects. Detox diets that severely limit protein or that require fasting, for example, can result in fatigue. Long-term fasting can result in vitamin and mineral deficiencies.”

Purium side effects

Purium Side Effects

While there are no mentions of side effects from Purium products, there’s a chance some may notice side effects from Purium ingredients, including:

A headache

Upset stomach

Purium Cost

The price of Purium’s products is the most commonly reported problem with the company. The Purium 10-day Transformation for weight-loss and detox provides meals for 30 days and the supplements related to the diet.
The transformation will run you around $314.25. Being a month-long program, if you don’t see any results, that can do some damage to your bank account.

The Purium 10-Day Transformation is available on the official website for $249.

The 10-day pack includes:

Purium Power Shake

Super Amino 23

Caramel Apple Daily Fiber Blend

Super Cleans-R

Biome Medic

What Users Are Saying

“Excellent product great Bang for your dollar – Meal replacement, excellent meal substitute great taste and flavor.”

“Awful Product Don’t Buy it! – This product literally makes you sick to your stomach! Drink it, then vomit!! It should be taken off the market!”

Marguerite Meyerson

“I ordered this from Amazon since there was a backlog in the Purium site. I was skeptical of the quality and value, but it’s the same shake and arrived in 2 days. I paid the same amount as on the company website since they charge shipping and handling. The flavor is apple berry and very mild. There is no crazy aftertaste and I drink it with an apple in the morning for breakfast and I stay full for hours.”

Purium Ingredients

Bottom Line

The Bottom Line on Purium

The Purium company has a great philosophy of wanting to help people end their dependence on processed convenience food and start a healthy life. The science behind the ingredients in most of their products are pretty sound, and we like that but aren’t convinced with the actual products themselves – just the ingredients.

Healthy lifestyle changes are at the heart of successfully losing weight. Keeping the weight off is often a different story. It’s difficult to fight off rebound weight gain, but we found a weight-loss app that’s proven to help.

Purium's Power Shake Review/Taste Test!

From their website, it clearly states that Purium offers the key that benefits our bodies and the Earth. I’m going out on a limb here by saying that in many cases, these health companies are legit, and only have the incentives of doing what’s right and this is usually reflected in their product prices. However, price isn’t often an indication of quality. The best quality product usually the one you can make at home, referring to a list of healthy, recommended products.

Additional reading will tell you that Purium is a multi-level marketing (MLM) company. Their marketing technique is unique in a way that when you enroll as a “Brand Partner”, you can give anyone a $50 gift card for their Purium Superfood products. You earn money when they cash the gift card in and even more commission when they, too become a partner. MLMs tend to have a bad rep because these companies rely on these partners and agents to market products to your average consumer, often time harassing friends and family for some commission. You’ve probably been at the butt end of it.

Over the years, MLM companies have been involved in lawsuits and scandals. A look into Herbalife’s history with the law will tell you why. However, despite the nature of Purium’s marketing tactics, I’m going to review some of their most popular product and give my honest judgment on the company. Before we review their 10-day weight loss kit, let’s review some controversies this brand has in the past.

In 2011, Purium was caught violating health and safety codes by having lead approximately 30 of their products. That is a BIG deal. This was filed by the Environmental Research Center.

I still couldn’t get an answer to whether all of their products have been recalled ever since the lawsuit. To keep everyone safe, I wouldn’t bet on it, considering that many of their products do not have the stamp of approval by the FDA.

Anyhow, let’s go through their bestselling 10-Day Transformation- Weight Loss kit that sells at a whopping $249.00.

10-Day Transformation – Weight Loss

Anyone who’s been in the fitness industry can tell you that products which guarantee rapid weight loss in such short periods are a joke. Purium claims its supplements can “reset your metabolism, burn fat, and break your addiction to processed foods”.

It is possible, but by no means, it justifies spending hundreds of dollars for. Let’s take a look at the strict schedule Purium provides if you were to follow this program.

When it comes to weight-loss, it’s all about being in a caloric deficit. You should burn more calories compared to what you’re taking in. For solid food, Purium suggest 3 servings of flex food/beverages a day, which leaves us with mostly fruits and vegetables like avocados, apples, watermelon, and coconut water.

It’s no wonder that they can guarantee weight loss because you’re probably getting less than 400 calories worth of solid food a day. The 3-daily serves of Power Shake are worth 450 calories, and the nightly Fiber Blend will add 60 calories, bringing your average daily calorie intake to 910.

Purium also offers a naturopath to advise you if you have any health concerns or questions regarding their products. These are people who practice the art of alternative medicine, typically leaning towards herbs and traditional medicine. There’s an ongoing debate about whether naturopath doctors are real doctors. There are some licensed naturopathic physicians that attend accredited medical schools, but you can’t be certain with the “naturopaths” a company like Purium will provide.

In America, the term “naturopath” is not regulated in all states. If you have any health and diet-related questions, it’s better to take them to a real doctor where you’re confident of their certifications.

Another Option – Doing it Safely!

To safely lose weight, your average woman should be consuming 1,500 calories to lose 1-2 pounds a week. What Purium is suggesting is actually unhealthy and some have reported feeling sick, have digestive issues, and even mood swings throughout the process. Even the most seasoned MMA fighters are carefully attended to when they cut those pounds for a weigh-in. To instruct someone with no experience to do something similar is quite irresponsible.

You can save money by learning how low-carb diets work and creating your own meal plans. When you start healthy eating, you’ll naturally phase off the processed food, and you don’t need expensive supplements to do that. This is called a keystone habit, where an essential habit (eg. eating clean) will lead to unintended outcomes, such as pushing away the unhealthy food and going for a jog every other day. In a sense, you’ll feel better about yourself. You don’t need supplements or transformation kits for that.

Supplementing with amino acids have shown to improve mood, sleep, and muscle recovery. There are studies that show amino acid supplementation can aid in fat loss, but studies have been inconsistent. I’ll have to hand it to Purium for including the essential amino acids in their weight-loss program.

Based on the reviews, many have had positive experiences with this product, claiming that they’ve lost a lot of weight and felt better. I guess the price of this transformation kit plays a huge role in keeping people on track. Here are a couple of examples:

“The health and weight loss benefit my husband and I got from these superfoods was more than I could have hoped for.” - Deborah P., Yelp

“On my second 10-day Transformation Purium detox program, and I feel fantastic. I don’t have any pain in any part of my body, my digestive system feels like that of my twenty-year-old self.” – Tess, Dietsinreview

At the opposite end of the spectrum, you have those who feel like this product is a complete scam and engineered with the sole intention of making you sick.

“I feel horribly bloated and experienced such strong stomach pain that I could barely breathe. Moreover, the pain wakes me up at night.” – Violeta, Dietsinreview

My Take on the Reviews

You can’t always trust internet reviews, but you should be cautious especially when it comes to your health. As someone who sees two sides of the coin, I personally believe you do not need a supplement to achieve this, what more an expensive one at $249.00.

And sorry to burst their bubbles, but when you lose significant amounts of weight after following a short weight-transformation program, you’re losing water weight and not exactly burning fat, which only happens in the long run from cutting calories at a sustainable rate. Typically, as soon as they lose all that water weight, they’ll gain those pounds back quick.

I do appreciate the fact that Purium has included ingredients that are well-researched such as spirulina, flaxseed, and quinoa. However, this is a proprietary blend and you never know the quantities of each ingredient. A company that prioritizes profits will definitely underdose. This is as good as being irrelevant.

My Thoughts

Based on the 10-Day Transformation - Weight Loss kit alone, I see that Purium has done their research when it comes to ingredients. Just that. However, I consider this weight loss kit an extremely rigid programme that has to potential to make you sick from the sharp reduction of calories and mentally taxing from having to follow such a strict eating schedule.

The fact that Purium is an MLM company doesn’t sit well with me either. The quality of their product is okay at best, but their marketing tactic is tacky. A company that is confident in the quality of their products should not rely on “Brand Partners” to build a downline just to sell.

Take a good look at their compensation plan, and you’ll notice how they market it better than their products itself.

To blatantly label Purium a scam would be unfair to the company, however, I would scrutinize everything in the label. I highly recommend staying away from this company due to its controversial history with the law and the potential of having ingredients that are harmful.

There are no shortcuts to losing fat, and you should be skeptical of products that guarantee insane results in such a short time frame. I have no rights about how you spend your money, but I do believe there are other better options in the market that are transparent and truly care about the well-being of their customers.

And Purium isn’t one of them.

They send you 2X the amount you need to do one 10-day cleanse. I thought the price was way too high. So why not offer ONLY enough for ONE 10-day cleanse and lower the price.
This was not as difficult to do as I had imagined it might be. The only discomfort I felt was coffee withdrawal on day one, then around day 8-9, it all started to taste horrible to me and I began to crave food.
The fast weight loss makes you deliriously happy for a week or so, but then when it comes roaring back again it is a real drag. As soon as I started eating again, I gained all the weight back immediately. I was not very disciplined but I didn't start eating cases of doughnuts, either. I ate the way I usually do, mostly sensibly. But it felt like I might gain ten pounds by eating one carrot or something.
I learned (for the millionth time... you'd think I'd know by now) that things that seem too good to be true, usually are. I think it would probably be more sensible to just count calories and add in a little exercise. But this gets you jump started.

Best Organic Cleanse for 2021 - The Ultimate Lifestyle Transformation! [Purium Review]
Purium diet review

This Purium diet review is an opinion piece. Most of the diet reviews on my site are not reviews of how a product worked for me; if I tried every single diet product that I review, I’d be broke and probably dead by now. Instead of subjecting myself to that, I examine the claims that the companies make about their products, and hold them up to current research and physiology to see if they stick. The purpose of these reviews is to teach you how to recognize when companies sell products by using untrue claims and poor (or no) research.

And so it begins, according to the Purium site:

Transform your metabolism and unlock your “Skinny Gene” with green, raw, organic superfoods. Our 10-Day Transformation and weight loss products are the cleanest, easiest ways to start your weight loss journey. This is a new start and it doesn’t matter how you gained weight or how long you’ve struggled to lose it. These pure and premium products can reset your metabolism, burn fat and break your addictions to processed foods.

Green, raw, organic, PURE foods are going to transform your metabolism and ‘unlock your skinny gene’. Aren’t you lucky!

So many diet programs in the world. So many. I’ve been getting emails asking me to review Purium, so I decided to finally take a look at it.

Like I figured, Purium is about the same as any other program: it has a bit of detox, a ton of testimonials (all positive, naturally), some big promises, a lot of unproven BS, and a pretty, colourful website to make you believe that this stuff is magical. Wow! It must be incredible!

I decided to review Purium’s ’10-Day Transformation’ weight loss program, because who doesn’t want to lose weight quickly and effortlessly by activating their ‘skinny hormone’? Sounds like a dream…let’s do this!

The 10 Day Transformation has 5 products in it, plus the omnipresent shaker cup that companies seem to think is such a great add-on but is so cheap.

The Purium site states:

Expect to lose up to 11 pounds and 8 inches in just 10 days. Activate your “skinny hormone” (adiponectin), reset your metabolism and turn your body into a fat burning machine. Flood your body with nutrient-dense, low calorie superfoods and break addictions to sugar, salt, carbs, and chemicals. This complete, easy-to-follow program has worked for more than 100,000 people. Now it’s your turn!

 Burns fat and builds muscle

Helps the body break addictions to harmful foods

Aids the body in detoxification and cleansing of the digestive tract

Do you see the red flags? I do.

#1: The word ‘transformation’. Can I be honest with you? A weight loss program is not going to transform your life. You’ll still be the same person you were before, even if you end up losing weight. You need to do the work to ‘transform’ your life; a weight loss program isn’t going to do it.

#2: The crazy weight loss promise. 8 inches in just 10 days? Do you know how much that is? A pound a day is a lot. Most people can’t achieve that without severe dehydration and starvation. Insane weight loss promises also make me suspicious of how many calories you’re actually going to eat (aka starve on) for those 10 days.

#3: This program has worked for 100,000 people? Really? I deal in evidence, Purium, so show me the proof. Maybe 100,000 people have purchased this product, but it appears to me as though Purium has not done any research on their actual product..so how would they know if it works? Did they follow up with all 100,000 people who it ‘worked’ for? Doubtful. And even if they did, how well it did work? What were the indicators? How long did they keep the weight off?

All very important questions.

#4: No food ‘burns fat’: neither do diets or supplements. That’s a myth, but diet programs continue to use that terminology, and it continues to piss me off.

#5: Detoxification and cleansing is a complete sham. Your own body does that work. Chemophobia, or the fear of ‘chemicals’, is hard at work here. What chemicals are they referring to? They don’t say…because fear sells product!

Can I also just say that ‘resetting your metabolism’ does NOT happen in 10 days, nor does it happen with supplements or a starvation diet. Your metabolism isn’t like an IPhone, where you can just push a button to reset to factory settings.

Uh uh, sorry.

Already Purium is aggravating me with their red flags and the use of the words ‘pure’ and ‘clean’ in relation to food, but let’s press on.

The 10 Day Transformation consists of a few products that contain nothing special, and a diet plan that is full of pseudoscientific rules and not much else…including food.

The products are:

Power Shake

This is basically is powder consisting of greens, grains, and flavorings. The company claims that drinking the shake is akin to consuming several superfoods at once. Sure, it may have components of whatever those ‘superfoods’ (hate that term) are, but it’s not a replacement for solid food. You still need to eat your vegetables.

Nothing special to see here people, move on.

Apothe Cherry

This cherry juice is a natural source of melatonin, which can help you sleep. It also contains 17g sugar per 2 tablespoon serving, so there’s that. Yes, the sugar is natural, but do you really need it?

Super Amino 23

Essentially, this is a tablet-based vegan source of amino acids. Maybe to make up for the ones you’re starving your body of with the diet program? Useless.

Daily Fiber Blend

This fiber comes with the biggest promise of all: fat burning! It contains rice bran fiber that increases the hormone adiponectin ‘to help your body burn fat’.

Okay, so if Purium is going to make this promise to you, I’m going to go through the research and see if they’re being honest.

Just for you guys, I went through a LOT of research on adiponectin. Much of it was done on rats (proves nothing for humans). Some of it was not.

The research on adiponectin that Purium has posted on its ‘adiponectin’ page proves one thing: correlation is just that: correlation.

All of the research that Purium uses to try and prove its fat-burning theory about adiponectin  – except for one – aren’t directly relevant to what they’re actually is trying to prove: THAT CONSUMING THE 20G OF RICE BRAN A DAY THAT’s IN THE FIBER SUPPLEMENT INCREASES ADIPONECTIN, WHICH IN TURN ‘BURNS FAT’ AND HELPS YOU LOSE WEIGHT.

The one research study that Purium cites that is actually associated with rice bran is a small Chinese study done on diabetics, that doesn’t even measure weight! What?

The study concluded that the rice bran lowered blood lipids and blood sugar in the subjects, which we would expect, since fiber – which is what rice bran is, FYI – is known to have those effects. I’m not sure how Purium thought to extrapolate those effects into their prediction that rice bran will help you lose weight through its interaction with adiponectin, but here we are.

Purium has never done research on their products, as far as I can tell; nor have they concluded to my satisfaction that adiponectin causes weight loss. People who weigh less may have more adiponectin in their bodies, and that doesn’t prove a hell of a lot to someone who wants to use it to lose weight. In fact, in looking at other studies, it appears as though adiponectin may rise as a result of weight loss. What came first, the chicken, or the adiponectin?

Purium surely isn’t holding some secret of adiponectin and weight, hostage. We’ve known about this hormone for years, but it’s not at all used to combat weight. Why do you think that is?

If adiponectin has really been proven to be the key to weight loss and ‘fat burning’, why then isn’t it a mainstream obesity treatment?

Remember: Adiponectin is only one of many hormones that affect or are affected by, weight. Weight loss is not nearly as simple as ‘eat some rice bran, it will burn your fat, people’. No one is saying that rice bran, or adiponectin, is bad. All I’m saying is, it probably doesn’t work the way Purium will have you believe.

Now, we’re left with the diet portion of the 10 Day Transformation.

It’s a predictable mixture of low calories, weird rules, and up-selling of Purium products. Basically, you starve and you spend more money. Hm.

The plan is super low in calories, probably to maximize your weight loss during those 10 days. Too bad it won’t stay off once you begin eating normally again (probably sooner than you think, depending on your tolerance for starvation).

Here are some of the ‘rules’ and tidbits that Purium has laid out in its diet plan:

Bananas…are NOT permitted. You may have 1⁄2 serving of carrots (they are also an ingredient in the Power Shake). So they’re perpetuating the myth that bananas are carrots make you gain weight? Not okay.

Eating apples first thing in the morning can help wake you up. Where the hell did they get that one from?

Protein options include broccoli. Um, no. Broccoli is a VEGETABLE, not a PROTEIN. It contains nominal amounts of protein, but not nearly enough for a meal – unless you eat about 50 cups of it. *fart*

DO omit dairy, processed foods, and meat from your diet, 2-3 days before starting the program. So what I’m hearing is that for some reason, dairy and meat aren’t healthy, and also: this is the 10 Day Transformation, but now parts of the diet are 13 days?

DO take CONTROL Pre-Meal Capsules or Control spray if you need more help curbing your appetite. Upsell! The spray contains garcinia cambogia, which has never ever ever been proven to attenuate appetite or cause weight loss.

DO grab an extra Flex Food instead of cheating or abandoning the program.

Flex foods:

• 1 Avocado

• 1 Apple

• 1 cup Watermelon

• Unlimited Celery

• Unlimited Cucumbers

• 1 cup Broccoli, Caulifower, Kale, or Spinach

• 1 cup Berries

• 1 cup Sauerkraut or Kimchi (no additives)

• 1 cup Summer squash (winter squash not permitted)

• 1/2 cup Carrots

Because when I’m starving, I want all the cucumbers I can eat!!! Absurd.

Hey Purium! The 80s called, they want their diet back! I’m shocked there’s no rice cakes and Tab on this diet.

I’m done. I’m done with Purium.

In Short:

  • Don’t follow a diet program that states that broccoli is a protein. If they’re selling a DIET, they should at least get nutrition 101 right.
  • Don’t just accept the fact that a product has ‘research’ behind it. I hope the above has given you some insight into how companies actually fudge the facts to ‘prove’ their claims.
  • If you starve yourself for 10 days, you might lose weight, but it’s not healthy and the weight loss is not sustainable.
  • If you are truly hungry, you need FOOD. You don’t need ‘spray’ that’s completely useless…or another slice of cucumber. Gawd. Intuitive eating, anyone?
  • Be very wary of any program in which you need to spend a ton of money on products that MUST be taken in order to get the desired results. Weight loss is big business, and this is a huge red flag.
  • Crazy weight loss promises, detoxification, ‘pure’ and ‘clean’ food, and ‘resetting your metabolism’ are figments of your imagination. Move on, please.
  • Bananas and carrots are not ‘fattening’. Stop with that nonsense.

The verdict:

Hard pass.

Transform your body in just ten days? The Purium 10-Day Transformation sounds life-changing. In fact, Purium Health Products founder David Sandoval, now in his fifties, claims that since his epiphany twenty years ago and commitment to using the products he sells, he’s going to live until he’s 120. [1]

Purium is based on naturopathy, “the premise that our bodies are self-healing if given the right tools and environment.” Purium says its supplements are comprised of superfoods and herbs naturally, and organic “whenever possible,” with no artificial anything. [2]

The Purium 10-Day Transformation Get Started Pack, which Purium claims is “fastest, healthiest, simplest, least expensive weight loss program on the planet,” will run around $200.

Purium is headquartered in Long Beach, California; the contact number is 888-747-6733. Founded in 1993, they once went by the name Organic by Nature. Their Better Business Bureau profile was only opened last year (2016), they are not accredited, and they currently have a D-plus rating based on two customer reviews (50-50) and one filed complaint they haven’t responded to. They are a multi-level marketing company (also known as a “pyramid scheme” when they aren’t above-board about the process), though they do seem to have a less-sales-pressure system than most. [3][4]

Purium 10-Day Transformation Claims

According to its website,

  • 100,000 people have proved that the Purium 10-Day Transformation is the fastest, easiest, least expensive and healthiest way to lose weight. Most people lose 5 pounds, 10 pounds, even 20 pounds in just 10 days [5]
  • healthy detox, more energy, better sleep and breaking addictions to processed foods [5]
  • saturates your cells with organic superfood nutrients that trigger the release of fat and toxins. You get protein, fruits and vegetables in super-concentrated forms. Maximum nutrient density and minimal calories. [5]

And if that wasn’t enough to make you jump on the website now, Purium has “group cleanses that begin every Monday and Thursday, provides a support guide and group support calls “throughout the 10 days to keep you on track.” Purium says the “best part” is you’re losing fat, not muscle.

This is really just ‘transfer spending’ because your food budget goes down to almost zero during the 10 days. For about the same price as one restaurant meal you can get all of the superfood nutrition your body needs for an entire day. [5]

In a word, wow. Sold? What’s next?

Purium health products and programs include the Athlete System and Daily Core, but it is the 10-Day Transformation—an “anabolic program that floods your body with nutrients while purging harmful toxins from your system”—that’s most popular.  Purium says this diet will detox the body, burn fat and build muscle, break your body’s addiction to bad food, and help to reset your metabolism using “nutrient dense superfoods,” slow-burning carbs, and very digestible proteins.

You have to dig deep to find the .pdf FAQ file, but that fine print is crucial; you’ll learn, for example that you not only will be too weak to exercise, Purium says don’t do any more than 15 minutes a day tops, if at all. Hmmm. OK, so you’re going to take it easy during this cleanse, folks. They also say you should consult your doctor before starting this cleanse. In fact, if you’re taking any medications at all or have any medical condition at all they say you must talk to your physician. (Who will probably tell you no.) There are a number of other important concerns addressed so make sure to read it thoroughly before you start this cleanse, if you’re thinking about it. [6]

Purium 10-Day Transformation Ingredients/Plan

The daily cleanse is three shakes, three cups of fruits and veggies, a cherry juice drink and the other supplements. That’s basically it. There’s a nutritionist available for questions via email, so that’s cool.

Okay, so you’re a relatively healthy adult and you’re going for it. I mean, it’s not called the “celebrity” cleanse for nothing. Lots of people have done it. (I’m not saying do it, by the way; you’ll see in The Bottom Line.)

The $200 10-day pack includes

  • Purium Power Shake—this is like an extra daily dose of super veggies
  • Super Amino 23—your protein
  • Apothe-Cherry, which consists of antioxidants, melatonin and tart cherry—your fruit
  • Caramel Apple Daily Fiber Blend is supposed to cleanse the body
  • Super Lytes supplements are meant to hydrate and provide electrolyte replacement

You also get a shaker bottle, tape measure and gym bag. The promise is if you follow the program, “you can expect to lose anywhere from 5 to 20 pounds in 10 days … these five products are all you need.” Purium says in a 2013 study, participants lost an average of 11.3 pounds in 10 days. [7]

Founder Sandoval says that “if you care about your body, you will use Purium Products.” [1]

Purium Cleanse Side Effects

Purium Cleanse side effects potentially include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headaches, fatigue, cravings, caffeine withdrawals, and gastrointestinal discomforts. Although these side effects may not effect each user, they have been recorded in reviews and research of the Purium Cleanse in the past.

back to menu ↑

The Science (or Lack Thereof) Behind Purium 10-Day Transformation

So what about the Purium cleanse? Is there good science?

Here’s the thing: according to the Mayo Clinic, among the most reliable sources for medical information, while detoxes and cleanses are popular, there’s no scientific evidence that they’re any good for you and likely don’t even remove toxins from the body—the liver and kidneys are pretty amazing at doing this job. [8][9]

So why do people swear they just feel better after a cleanse? Mayo Clinic registered and licensed dietitian Katherine Zeratsky says it’s because as part of the cleanse you quit eating processed foods, junk and fast foods—all packed with fats and sugar—and “simply avoiding these high-calorie low-nutrition foods for a few days may be part of why people feel better.” [10][9]

Not unlike the possible side effects from similar detoxes, the Purium Cleanse side effects can be mild or severe and may include gastrointestinal discomforts. And though the Mayo Clinic sees little evidence that cleanses do what they claim, Zeratsky says if you’re going to do one, a cleanse could be “a way to jump-start making healthier food choices going forward every day.” [10]

Word on the Street About Purium 10-Day Transformation

Purium reviews are really all over the map. Citing reviews not featured on Purium’s website—for obvious reasons—we went to Amazon.com, where the Purium 10-day Transformation cleanse is available. Reviews where users took issue with delivery, refunds and the like we do not include, since they’re dealing with sellers, not Purium directly. [11]

So, of 113 reviews, 67 users gave it four stars or above. To be honest, that’s a respectable amount, though a full quarter of those 113 reviews were 1-star. Essentially a love it/hate it deal.

Let’s start with the fans. Anonymous user “Amazon Customer” gave it 5 stars (2017): “Awesome! This product really works! Follow the directions and eat your flex foods! I lost 17 pounds” [12]

My favorite is from user “Kevin Cook” (2016, 5 stars): “Tastes like an old sailor’s boot, but holy crap this stuff works! Suck it up for 10 days and you’ll see. Lost 12 pounds!” [13]

I mean if this review isn’t an endorsement, I don’t know what is.

One of the issues for some with Purium is that it’s a multi-level marketing business and it’s hard to know if people reviewing are distributors or not, so this one from “m16shooter” is pretty convincing (2015, 5 stars):

First off, I am not a distributor or a promoter. I’m just a normal Joe that was looking to lose a few pounds and cleanse my body. And on that note, this does work. I lost 9lbs and have managed to keep off 7lbs since. If I ever feel the need to detox/cleanse again, I will definitely buy this again. [14]

Now to the “no way,” customers.

“GigiM” was not a fan (2017, 1 star): “The product was way too strong and made me ill. Company was very understanding and refunded my money” [15]

One “Amazon customer” fared no better (2016, 1 star): “Super disappointed …Would give zero stars if I could. This product made me SICK—nausea, vomiting and diarrhea! I could not even finish the first day & could NEVER drink that green drink again! I cleanse frequently—at least 2 to 3x/year for past 15 years, so it was NOT a detox reaction! This product did not agree with my body!” [16]

Amazon user “Lesblant” has this headline: “There is No Free Lunch. Count Calories Instead.” They then continue (2017, 2 stars):

They send you 2X the amount you need to do one 10-day cleanse. I thought the price was way too high. … This was not as difficult to do as I had imagined it might be.

I was not very disciplined but I didn’t start eating cases of doughnuts, either. I ate the way I usually do, mostly sensibly. But it felt like I might gain ten pounds by eating one carrot or something.

I learned (for the millionth time… you’d think I’d know by now) that things that seem too good to be true, usually are. I think it would probably be more sensible to just count calories and add in a little exercise. But this gets you jump started.[17]

The Bottom Line—Is Purium 10-Day Transformation Worth a Try?

Definitely Not. Save. Your. Money. I’m with the Mayo Clinic and with Lesblant. I believe the science, or lack thereof, makes it pretty clear that our bodies detox themselves and that any lose-weight-fast recipe—be it a superfood cleanse or a crazy cabbage soup diet—is doomed. The weight is going to come back, as sure as I am going to eat some Ben & Jerry’s tonight.
