Super Saiyan Blue (サイヤブルー,Sūpā Saiya-jin Burū), also known as Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan (サイヤゴッドサイヤ,Sūpā Saiya-jin Goddo Sūpā Saiya-jin), is a form that combines the power of Super Saiyan God with the first Super Saiyan form.
This form can be accessed by absorbing the powers of a god, activating them and then transforming into a Super Saiyan, or through vigorous ki control training with a deity with godly ki and then obtaining that Godly ki for oneself, as seen with Vegeta in the Super anime. This form surpasses its predecessor, Super Saiyan God.
In contrast, the Super Saiyan Rosé form is the result of a divine Super Saiyan God transforming into the first Super Saiyan form (in the anime) or the divine counterpart of Super Saiyan Blue (in the manga).
Concept and creation
For the film Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection ‘F’, Akira Toriyama further expanded on the concept of the “Super Saiyan God” transformation featured in Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods by combining its power into that of a Super Saiyan. As the author explained it, and as Goku similarly mentions in the movie, the form is the result of a Saiyan with the power of Super Saiyan God further transforming into a Super Saiyan.
In relation to Goku, Toriyama says on Goku he made his hair blue to express how “by overcoming a certain limit he has become both strong and tranquil, able to keep his composure in a fight”. And in regards to Vegeta, he adds that he gave Vegeta black clothes because he figured that maybe Bulma had modified his combat uniform to add some slight improvements. On that note, it was constructed by the Capsule Corporation development branch under Bulma’s instructions. In an interview with Toyotarō, Akira Toriyama reveals that he was thinking about having the form be white, but then it would have color-clashed with the “next enemy”, so he figured he should save it for another occasion.
Akira Toriyama named the form "Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan" in his character designs for Goku and Vegeta. The name Super Saiyan Blue is usually used in the Dragon Ball Super anime and manga, whereas the name Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan is more often used in merchandise and video games.
This form is nearly identical to the first Super Saiyan form, the only main differences being that the hair and irises are now cyanish in color (albeit the irises change to a slightly darker color than the hair). In Dragon Ball Super: Broly, the hue is much darker, akin to Vegeta's evolved state. Unlike the previous godly form, the Saiyan's physical form remains pretty much the same.
In the manga the state initially appears without sparks in its aura, but gains them after Goku and Vegeta's training in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber prior to the Tournament of Destroyers.
Super Saiyan Blue boasts a vibrant, fiery, electric blue aura, as opposed to the blazing orange aura of Super Saiyan God. The aura surrounding the Super Saiyan Blue form also appears to be glittering somewhat, with small sparkling particles of energy traveling upwards within the flames, with occasional surges of electricity. If one inspects closely, a very subtle yellow glow can be seen on the outside of the aura as well. It was not directly stated why this is present, but it could be remnants of the original Super Saiyan transformation. This dual colored aura resembles that of Trunks' Super Saiyan Rage form. Unlike the main Super Saiyan transformations, the user's body does not glow in Blue form without an aura. In Dragon Ball Super: Broly, this subtle glow is omitted entirely.
When the user first transforms, they are enveloped by an aura of white energy, leaving a dark silhouette of themselves in it. They are then surrounded by a shell of blue ki which cracks and breaks apart, revealing the transformed user within, before the fiery aura explodes forth. Most subsequent transformations behave like an ordinary Super Saiyan, in which the user's hair rises and turns blue.
In the case of Commeson duplicates as shown by Duplicate Vegeta, the form's eyes and hair glow blue though the hair's color is a more saturated shade of blue than that of natural Saiyans. As Commeson duplicates like Vegeta's lack facial hair such as eyebrows only their head hair changes color.
In Dragon Ball Heroes, the Saiyan avatars' hair do not change in shape when using this form, making it visually similar to Super Saiyan God. This also applies to Saiyan Future Warrior in Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2. If a Saiyan is bald, they will simply gain a Super Saiyan Blue aura though their eyebrows will still change color as will any other facial hair.
Usage and power
In Goku's words, this form is what happens when a "Saiyan with the power of a Super Saiyan God further transforms himself into a Super Saiyan". Simply, it is the first Super Saiyan form combined with the power and crimson godly ki of a Super Saiyan God turned cyan blue, due to a mortal absorbing it. The form can be obtained by a Saiyan who has become a Super Saiyan God and then retained the power; if the Saiyan utilizes the might of Super Saiyan God and then attempts to transform into a Super Saiyan, they will instead naturally evolve into a Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan (Super Saiyan Blue or Super Saiyan Rosé, depending on the individual's status). And reactivating their non-god enhanced Super Saiyan form. Alternatively, as shown in the anime and by Goku Black in the manga, the Saiyan can evolve their standard Super Saiyan form into a Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan form if they increase its strength until it surpasses Super Saiyan God. According to Dragon Ball Z: Extreme Butōden, Super Saiyan Blue is the most powerful of all Super Saiyan transformations.
This form provides its users with the ki of a god. The form pushes the user's power, strength, and speed to new heights beyond those of previous Super Saiyan levels, as well as a calm mind that make it and its ki easier to control compared to the other Saiyan forms such as Super Saiyan 3 or Super Saiyan God, the ki control of this form allowed both Goku and Vegeta to keep their new level of ki from leaking out of the form, unlike Super Saiyan 2 and 3, which only increase their power to the full limit and leak ki, this feature allowed Goku and Vegeta to maintain ki without being used to keep the form on, this is how Goku can push himself to Kaio-ken x10, and then later on x20. This allows them to fight within the form freely without ki drain and reserved for ki-based attacks. It is stated by both Goku and Vegeta that a calm mind and focus are required to use this form properly. The form's godly ki renders the Saiyan's own ki insensible by most mortals via ki sense, and only those who know how to sense godly ki can detect it. Despite the form's huge upgrade in power from the original Super Saiyan God, neither Goku nor Vegeta still could challenge Beerus alone, needing to fight together to be able to stand a chance. This form was initially not powerful enough to defeat Golden Frieza at full power either, but due to Goku and Vegeta's experience with the form, Super Saiyan Blue was able to outlast Golden Frieza thanks to its efficient ki and stamina output compared to his unmastered transformations. This form becomes stronger through training, as Goku was able to match Golden Frieza in power during their next meeting, even though Frieza was noticed to have become stronger himself. In fact, it is even able to increase its strength with sufficient amount of combat, displayed by how while he got easily beaten back by Jiren, the next time, Goku was able to match up to him and make him fight more seriously. Because of this form's perfect innate ki control and the calm mind required to attain it, this form can be combined with the Kaio-ken to create the Super Saiyan Blue Kaio-ken in the anime.
Despite its benefits, however, the Super Saiyan Blue form does drain a lot of stamina upon initially being unlocked. While not nearly as noticeable or potent as the Super Saiyan 3 and unmastered Golden Frieza forms, Super Saiyan Blue needs to be mastered via intense training or long-time experience, as Goku and Vegeta have. The form's stamina flaw is elaborated on in the Dragon Ball Super manga: If the form is subsequently used multiple times in a row, on the second consecutive usage the user’s abilities will drop by over 90% from their full power, explaining how Vegeta was unable to overwhelm Hit like Goku could, due to Vegeta already using the form against Cabba. This stamina flaw also exists in the anime, although it is never stated exactly how much power the user loses. Goku admitted that Super Saiyan Blue required too much energy to start the battle during the Tournament of Destroyers. By the time of the Zeno Expo, Goku was able to repeatedly use the form and the Kaio-ken without drawbacks, but even so during the Tournament of Power Goku and Vegeta still felt that they never want to constantly use the form right from the start of the tournament, and Whis noted that the form still drained a lot of stamina if it was already used so early in the tournament, preferring to fight in their regular Super Saiyan forms and using the Blue form when necessary. Later on in the manga, during the final fight against Black and Future Zamasu, Vegeta showed that this flaw can be bypassed by learning to perfectly switch back and forth between Super Saiyan God and Super Saiyan Blue in an instant, moving around as a Super Saiyan God and attacking and defending as a Super Saiyan Blue - allowing for much more powerful and more concentrated attacks. In addition, similar to Super Saiyan 4, the strain regarding ki becomes significant when utilizing the form in a fusion, whether by Potara earrings. This was especially demonstrated with Vegito's fight with Fused Zamasu, where the transformation ended prematurely. However, the strain does not seem to be present when using the Fusion Dance, as when Gogeta took on the Super Saiyan Blue form, he showed no signs of defusing prematurely.
In the anime, Vegeta is shown using this transformation again against Future Trunks, as he laughed when Trunks asked Vegeta if he would transform into a Super Saiyan 3. Trunks remarked that Vegeta and Goku should easily be able to beat Goku Black. As their battle continued, Vegeta was able to easily defeat Trunks. However, the aforementioned fight against Black turned out more difficult than expected. Vegeta and in the anime only Goku use this form while battling Goku Black, before and after he transforms into Super Saiyan Rosé. Despite their efforts, in the anime Black's improved base form (which previously fought on par with Goku's Super Saiyan 2) was easily able to withstand most of the attacks Super Saiyan Blue Vegeta dealt, and in the manga Super Saiyan Goku Black manages to match Super Saiyan Blue Vegeta thanks to being healed by Future Zamasu and receiving a power-up, and Black's transformation into Super Saiyan Rosé only made the situation more critical. In the anime, after training in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber and going back to the Future, Vegeta was shown to have increased his power through anger enough that in his Super Saiyan Blue form he managed to overpower and pummel Goku Black, who was in the Super Saiyan Rosé state at the time even blocking Black's Fierce God Slicer with his bare fist.
In the manga, by the final fight against Goku Black and Future Zamasu, Vegeta revealed the ability to utilize Super Saiyan Blue's full power, in short, instant bursts as he attacks. It is noted by Goku that in order to counteract the form's stamina drawback, Vegeta learned to transform into Blue for brief moments multiple times without his stamina dropping at all, something that allowed him to overwhelm Black.
Goku Black first showcases his equivalent of the Super Saiyan Blue form during his battle with Vegeta in the future; however, due to being an actual deity, his version has a bright pink and purple color scheme. He dubs the form Super Saiyan Rosé.
In this form, Vegito is able to challenge and even overwhelm Fused Zamasu, gaining a upper hand in their fight in the anime, and easily overwhelming him in the manga. In the manga, Vegito Blue's power is noted to be potentially greater than that of Beerus by Shin. However, before Vegito could perform the finishing blow, this form proved to be too powerful, and also strenuous, to be maintained and ultimately defused sooner than the estimated time. Due to Vegito using the Final Kamehameha against Fused Zamasu, both Goku and Vegeta cannot transform into Super Saiyan Blue afterwards due to the technique's massive energy output.
In the manga, Goku primarily stops using this form in combat in favor of it's perfected state following the battle with Zamasu, almost always only ever using this form as part of the initial transformation into the perfected form.
Prior to the Tournament of Power, Vegeta uses Super Saiyan Blue in a sparring match against Beerus prior to unveiling that he too has achieved the perfected version and from then on he too only ever uses the original form as part of taking on the perfected state.
In the anime, Goku utilizes this form again immediately when he begins his battle against Arale Norimaki, which also impresses the Android. Goku and Vegeta used this form again during Universe 6 and Universe 7's baseball match, and later when Goku fights Hit, who attempts to assassinate him and proved to be quite a match for this form - thanks to fighting at his very best using killing techniques, and with Goku unable to hit the assassin at all, because he was hiding in his Time Storage parallel world while he attacks the Saiyan using his deadly Invisible ki blasts, and attacking him by surprise once briefly bursting out of his Time Storage parallel world - the fight ultimately ended in a stalemate when Super Saiyan Blue Goku unleashes a massive aura burst, and then destroys Hit's Time Storage world without the need to use Kaio-ken, then launches a full-power God Kamehameha at Hit, with the assassin trying to hold his own against Goku's massive assault. Vegeta also used it during his training with Whis on Beerus' planet in preparation for the multi-universal tournament.
Goku once again transforms during his match against the giant Bergamo during the Zeno Expo, to the shock and awe of all the deities seeing him transform, with Khai feeling and stating the form's godly pressure, and Roh labeling Goku's power in this form as "power rivaling that of gods", Future Zeno called Goku "amazing" upon seeing him transform.
Later, during his battle against the Warrior of Justice Top, Goku used Super Saiyan Blue to escape the Pride Trooper's crushing hold, and then proceeds to briefly outmatch him using his form's godly speed, but Top defends himself and puts up quite a better fight against Goku's godly ki surrounded form. Goku unleashes a God Kamehameha at the Pride Trooper, while he retaliated with his Justice Flash technique, Goku then uses his Instant Transmission and gets closer to Top, firing the Kamehameha afterwards, Top blocks it, causing a massive explosion, but the Pride Trooper sturdily survived.
Goku transforms into Super Saiyan Blue during his sparring session with Krillin in an effort to test his true might, with Krillin feeling Goku's godly pressure, and Android 18 and Gohan noticing a large gap in their powers. Krillin charges his Kamehameha while Goku charges his slightly larger God Kamehameha, both fighters fire their beams, and a beam struggle is initiated, though Goku slowly gains the upper hand during the beam clash. Struggling, Krillin tries to hold out his own with his own beam until the struggle is stopped when Android 18 rushes in and kicks Goku's God Kamehameha away. Goku then used this form against Android 17 in their sparring session, having no choice because of his newfound strength. After his attempt to test him with a God Kamehameha, he started to trade blows until Android 17 stops the fight, not wanting to destroy the environment.
Later, Super Saiyan Blue Goku charged an all-out fist-to-fist clash against True Golden Frieza, once their punches made contact with each other, deeply hitting both their faces, they proved to be exactly on par with each other as both fighters were knocked out simultaneously after they briefly slipped past each other.
During the Tournament of Power, Goku turned into a Super Saiyan Blue to free himself from Nink's grip lock, easily freeing himself. When the Trio De Dangers charged their Triangle Dangers Beam, both Goku and Vegeta turned Super Saiyan Blue and overpowered the beam with a Final Kamehameha, knocking the Trio out of the arena in the process. Goku turned Super Saiyan Blue to fight Kale who was in her "true form", an uncontrolled state of Super Saiyan. Goku then used his God Kamehameha against Kale but had no effect on her, walking through it. This form proved to be comparable to Kale's in durability, even after being grabbed in the mouth, thrown aside, and crushed by a slab of Kachi Katchin, Goku showed no signs of considerable damage. During his fight against Dyspo, Goku uses Super Saiyan Blue in tandem with Super Saiyan God, in order to maximize his speed and power. Goku also used Super Saiyan Blue to go through K'nsi's explosive threads, taking no damage from the explosions and easily overpowered him. Goku used Super Saiyan Blue to free himself from Maji-Kayo's grip and revive Master Roshi, and he was successful in both. Vegeta used Super Saiyan Blue when he broke free from the Evil Containment Wave seal and then proceeded to destroy one of Auta Magetta's ear covers and insults him.
After using all of his transformations (sans Super Saiyan 3) to test his strength, Goku used this transformation during his battle with Jiren. However, while he finally forced Jiren to fight back, even briefly pushing him back and making him choose to dodge his Kamehameha, once Jiren gets more serious, even Super Saiyan Blue, with its power multiplied by the x20 Super Saiyan Blue Kaio-ken, could not match Jiren. Vegeta later on uses this form to battle Top. Goku uses this form again against Kefla after seeing his Super Saiyan God form would not be enough to fight her, which she answers by turning Super Saiyan herself. He is ultimately overpowered by her and has to resort to using Super Saiyan Blue Kaio-ken to deflect her energy attack, but was still not enough against a more serious Kefla, and was knocked out with a single kick to the neck.
Later on, Goku displays sufficient increase in power to be able to go head on with Jiren using only the regular Super Saiyan Blue even though previously he was outclassed using Super Saiyan Blue Kaio-ken, with Jiren even being impressed by how Goku had grown stronger. However, upon Jiren getting more serious, Goku is once again pushed back but he is still able to fend off Jiren's attacks more adequately than before, long enough to have the trap he had set up trigger and managed to kick Jiren off the rock he was standing on, nearly eliminating him.
Vegeta's performance was initially much worse as he could not even make Jiren fight back, completely unable to faze him, and once Jiren gets annoyed, he got soundly beaten, even with aid from Super Saiyan Blue Goku. However, after seeing Jiren use his Invisible Strikes, unlike Goku, who only could briefly defend before being painfully launched away, Vegeta was able to properly analyze and then counter it, shocking Jiren enough for Vegeta to briefly push back the strongest fighter of Universe 11 until Jiren recovers and swiftly beats him down and nearly eliminates Vegeta, although he was able to stay on the stage despite being battered. Although he was able to force Jiren to block with a super-charged Final Flash, which astonished Belmod and Khai, he did no damage and was incapacitated by a Power Impact formed into a cage that electrified him and left him badly injured, though Jiren praised the might and was briefly knocked to the ground.
Later after being re-energized by Vegeta's ki, Super Saiyan Blue Goku could clash with Jiren using his full power for a time, but was easily beaten down to his base form with a single punch.
In the manga, Goku uses the ordinary Super Saiyan Blue once more to battle the powered up Granolah after his Super Saiyan God form proved to not be enough against the Cerealian. When even this proved ineffective he took on the Perfected state to use alongside Ultra Instinct.
In the Prison Planet Saga, Goku uses this form to battle with Super Saiyan 4Xeno Goku. In the manga, Goku and Vegeta immediately power up into this form when Cumber arrives and Vegeta continues to use it against Super Saiyan (Berserk) Goku, only to be at a disadvantage to the effects of his Evil Aura. In both media, Vegito uses this form to battle Cumber. In the anime Goku takes on this form to get Golden Great Ape Cumber's foot off him.
In Universal Conflict Saga, upon arriving in Universe 6, Vegeta uses this form in the manga to knock Oren out of Caulifla. Later in Universe 11 Vegeta takes on this form when going to attack Hearts, but is taken over by Oren, resulting in Oren Vegeta taking on Strongest Form 1. Goku uses this form against Super Saiyan 3 Cumber, with the two proving even in battle. In both media Vegeta uses this form to battle Kamioren. Arriving in Universe 7, in the anime Goku uses this form to battle evenly with Super Hearts until the warrior uses his Gravity Fist, while in the manga both Goku and Vegeta battle Super Hearts with this form, but are overwhelmed. Goku and Vegeta use this form against Perfect Hearts, though even alongside Jiren and Hit they are easily defeated and thus fuse. Gogeta uses Super Saiyan Blue and proves to be able to hold an advantage against Perfect Hearts, eventually defeating him, though in the anime needs help from Jiren and Hit when Hearts uses his full power.
In the Universe Creation Saga, Goku - and Vegeta in the anime - use this form to battle Beerus. In the anime Goku and Vegeta use this form to battle Turles and Bojack, who have been empowered by the Evil Aura while in the manga they utilize Super Saiyan God and Fu halts the battle upon seeing them turn Super Saiyan Blue as he knows his allies will be no match. In the anime, Goku and Vegeta use this form against Black Janemba and then later against Fu - who corrupts them. Vegito uses this form against Dark King Fu and (in the anime) Super Full Power Saiyan 4 Limit BreakerBroly.
In the New Space-Time War Saga, Vegeta uses this form when facing off against Turles and Cumber.
In the manga, the Super Saiyan Blue form's full power only manifests for a short while (in the initial moments of the form's usage during battle) and then immediately drops to the Super Saiyan Blue's normal levels of power. However, the true full power of the Blue form is explosively more powerful than the ordinary regulated power of the form, and so both Goku and Vegeta strive to find a way to utilize it at all times.
Vegeta was the first shown to utilize the full power for extended periods of time. By training to remove the stamina flaw of Super Saiyan Blue he could utilize a trick which involved switching between Super Saiyan God and Super Saiyan Blue in an instant in order to release the full explosive power of Super Saiyan Blue in these instants. This allowed him to overwhelm Super Saiyan Rosé Goku Black, whereas previously he was the one who had been overwhelmed. Goku later reveals a state that always uses the full power of Super Saiyan Blue.
Super Saiyan Blue's full potential only manifesting early in its usage does not exist in the anime, instead, it remains at the normal level of power. However, utilizing the God to Blue trick is still a way of maximizing the form's power when attacking.
"You took my body, you took my life... Then you even killed Chi-Chi and Goten... You're gonna regret telling me that, Zamasu! Cause now I'm mad... I'm really, REALLY mad..! And now it's time... TO PAAAAAYYYYYY!!"
In the anime, Goku and Vegeta managed to power up the Super Saiyan Blue form through rage. Goku attained this state after learning that Goku Black had killed Chi-Chi and Goten after stealing his body. This allowed Goku to overwhelm Black and Future Zamasu simultaneously until his anger passed, allowing Black to engrave this anger into his own power, combined by his severe injuries, gradually increasing his might and allowing him to counterattack against Goku. Later, Vegeta utilized the power of rage (at Goku Black harming Future Trunks) to improve his Super Saiyan Blue form's strength while in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, this allowed Vegeta to overwhelm Goku Black, although the latter used the same technique (angered at his weakened state and the inability to compete against a mortal like Vegeta) to further his power and created a scythe from his Fierce God Slicer.
This exists in the manga as well as during the final ordeal with Fused Zamasu, Vegeta greatly powered up in anger after he witnessed Future Trunks and Future Mai apparently dead on the ground. With this power, Vegeta is able to blow both Goku Black and Future Zamasu (who had morphed into Infinite Zamasu) into pieces with Gamma Burst Flash, but to no avail, since the mad Supreme Kai still regenerated after taking all that damage.
There are also several powered up variations of Super Saiyan Blue:
- Super Saiyan Blue Kaio-ken - By using the Kaio-ken alongside the Super Saiyan Blue form, Goku can increase the transformation's power. In the anime, he uses up to X10 during his battle against Hit and later up to X20 during his battle with Jiren.
"We Saiyans are sort of like planet brokers. We scour space for planets that will bring a high price on the galactic market. Once we find them we send our warriors there to purge them of any life and make them ready for sale. It's a very, very profitable business and we take great pride in being efficient in our work."
Carnivorous (Great Apes)
Saiyans (サイヤ,Saiya-jin) are a race of extraterrestrials in the Dragon Ballanime and manga and its adaptive sequels, Dragon Ball Z, Dragon Ball GT and Dragon Ball Super. In the series, the Saiyans from Universe 7 are a naturally aggressive warrior race who were supposedly striving to be the strongest in the universe, while the Saiyans from Universe 6 are protectors. Nearly all of the Saiyans from Universe 7 were obliterated by Frieza before the start of the Dragon Ball series.
The Saiyans play a central role in the series once it is revealed that the protagonist, Goku, is actually a Saiyan sent to conquer Earth.
Main article: Origins of character names The name is a pun on yajin (野人) which means "wildman", and an anagram of yasai (野菜) which means "vegetable". The suffix -jin means "person". "Saiyan" is the English transliteration of the roman letter term Saiya-jin. In the Japanese language, Saiya-jin (サイヤ) is pronounced "Sigh-ya-jeen" while in the English dubs, "Saiyan" is pronounced "Sey-uhn".
All full-blooded Saiyans (such as Raditz, Kakarot, Vegeta, Nappa, Paragus, Broly, or Bardock) have names that are a pun on various vegetables.
The homeworld of the Saiyans is Planet Sadala. The planet has a natural gravity that is ten times that of Earth, which helps give Saiyans a greater natural strength than most races. In Universe 7, the Saiyans lived here but their planet got destroyed by internal discord; in Universe 6, the planet still exists. In Universe 7, Planet Plant is conquered by the Saiyans after the defeat of the Tuffles, and they renamed it "Planet Vegeta" after their most powerful warrior and ruler, King Vegeta.
At some point, Planet Vegeta was visited by the God of Destruction Beerus, who ultimately deemed the Saiyans as a savage race with no chance of improving (or more accurately he felt that they were just annoying). He ultimately ordered Frieza to destroy the planet and the entire Saiyan race, who was of a similar mind set as he came to see the Saiyan race as potentially posing a threat to his tyranny. To which, the tyrant went to the planet and completely obliterated them from space, wiping out all but a small group of Saiyans.
- Universe 7
A baby Saiyan's power level is measured as soon as they are born, if their power level is up to standard they are raised as upper-level warriors and become combatant candidates. If their power level remains low even after a certain amount of time has passed they are classed as low-level warriors and become either engineers or infiltration babies. Infiltration babies are sent off to a planet the Saiyans have selected for take over, and if the baby grows up into a warrior capable of taking over the planet they are allowed to return as a full-fledged combatant. Infiltration babies have a low survival rate.
Saiyans do not naturally know how to fly, some need to be taught, while others work it out on their own (like Pan did in Dragon Ball Super). Training to increase power level is also uncommon, with only a few Saiyan children receiving a short period of special training to acquire a greater power level.
Saiyans do not celebrate any holidays. Instead of playing like Earthling children, Saiyan children fight amongst themselves.
Pride was significant to Saiyans until they were tamed by Frieza's army; causing all of the Saiyans who served Frieza (aside from Bardock) to have lost their pride.
Even prior to joining the Frieza Force, Saiyans possessed spaceships and combat-based items more advanced than Earth.
At some point Saiyans became capable with biotechnology, becoming able to create and even upgrade Saibamen.
Main article: Saiyan Army The Saiyans possessed a powerful military, the Saiyan Army (named only in the Funimation dub). As of Age 737, the Saiyan Army was under the command of Nappa (also stated only in the Funimation dub), who was its most powerful general. The Saiyan Army was employed under the Frieza Force, in which the tyrant would use the Saiyan warriors to conquer planets for him. Normally only upper level warriors are allowed to become combatants in the Saiyan Army, and they are chosen from birth, the army employs various ranks based on power levels: the only ranks mentioned in the series are "Elites" and "Low-Class", with the series creator Akira Toriyama confirming in an interview that there are also "Mid-Class" warriors; while almost all Saiyans are low-class warriors, there are only about ten mid-class warriors, and only King Vegeta and Prince Vegeta are elite warriors. This rank is determined by an innate latent battle power, but if their battle power rises greatly afterward, they can be promoted. Saiyans who are deemed lower level warriors from birth are usually not able to become combatants, however a lower level warrior who is made an infiltration baby and who returns successful from their mission will be allowed to be a full-fledged combatant. The military force met its final destruction when Frieza committed his Genocide of the Saiyans, with the force's only survivors being Vegeta, Nappa, Raditz, Onio, and two other male Saiyans.
In Universe 6, the Saiyans try to protect the universe and get rid of evil-doers. Because of this, they are known as Heroes of Justice. They also have their own elite unit in charge in protecting their home planet, called the Sadala Army.
- Ancient Saiyans
Ancient Saiyans (alternatively known as Prehistoric Saiyans) existed long ago. Aside from time travelers, none still exist in the modern time. They possess ki completely different from their modern day counterparts, but like them can transform into the Great Ape, Super Saiyan, Super Saiyan 2 and Super Saiyan 3 forms.
Most of these Saiyans were evil, the most notable being Cumber, who displayed the unique "Evil Aura" and as an extension of this, their golden-haired Super Saiyan forms possessed differences to modern Saiyans and they were capable of drawing out the full power of Super Saiyan 3.
A subspecies of ancient Saiyans were the "Super Saiyan God race", born from the original Super Saiyan God. Good ancient Saiyans are referred to as "the defeated" by Giblet due to them having been defeated and killed by evil Saiyans. They possess the potential to become Super Saiyan Gods.
In Dragon Ball Legends, the Tournament of Time was masterminded and created by Zahha to complete the Omnificence Crystal (a failed prototype Super Dragon Ball) by placing the two fragments that make up the crystal inside the Super Saiyan God race twins Shallot and Giblet, then have them become Super Saiyan Gods so he could manipulate them into fighting in an epic "battle of Super Saiyan Gods". In addition to being able to achieve Super Saiyan, Super Saiyan 2, Super Saiyan 3, and Super Saiyan God, Shallot has shown the ability to power-up via rage which temporarily causes him to produce the image of a Great Ape in his aura and pupils to briefly turn red. Shallot also exhibits a heightened sense of smell superior to even that of modern Saiyans like Goku and Broly, as Shallot's nose can even determine someone's power level via their scent alone. Additionally Shallot's sense of smell allows him to track those that lack ki signatures such as Red Ribbon Androids via their scent. Additionally, Shallot was able to learn Ki Sense on his first try after just a little instruction from Gohan (Kid). Both Giblet and Shallot reveal that they and the members of their subspecies of Ancient Saiyan, fought the Evil Ancient Saiyans who had fallen from the "true Saiyan way" that Yamoshi, the Original Super Saiyan God, Giblet, and Shallot had fought to restore, though ultimately failed due to the Evil Ancient Saiyans wiping them all out thus revealing that the evil Modern Saiyans of Universe 7 are the result of them inheriting the brutal ways of their Evil Ancient Saiyan ancestors.
- Modern Saiyans
The modern Saiyans are descended from the evil ancient Saiyans who killed the Original Super Saiyan God and historically wiped out the Super Saiyan God subspecies of Ancient Saiyan. The Saiyans who eventually joined the Frieza Force were the Saiyans who moved from Planet Sadala to Planet Vegeta, nearly all of them were wiped out by Frieza - leaving only a handful remaining. These Saiyans have displayed the ability to take on any Saiyan form aside from the full power Super Saiyan 3 and those exclusive to the Legendary Saiyan. Modern Saiyans are referred to as "the tainted" by Giblet due to possessing the blood of the evil Saiyans. Giblet also refers to modern Saiyans of Universe 6 & Universe 7 as Neo Saiyans though is seemingly ignorant that Universe 6 Saiyans are different from modern Saiyans of Universe 7, due to the Mastermind's manipulation.
- Earthling hybrids
While the Saiyans who worked under the Frieza Force are near extinct, they have carried on through Saiyan-Earthling hybrids through Goku and Vegeta, with these hybrids being fairly common by Age 1000.
Through advanced science, hybrid clones composed of Saiyans along with numerous other races were created from Age 767 on-wards. Bio-Androids like Cell have displayed the ability to use the Super Saiyan forms. The demonic Saiyan Bio-Androids have displayed their own distinct Super Saiyan form and can achieve the Dark King state via the Dark Factor.
- Godly beings
Saiyans who are full deities can also exist, though only one and his counterpart have existed as a Supreme Kai candidate. Saiyans who are proper godly beings possess natural god ki, as well as an altered Super Saiyan Blue. Additionally in Super Dragon Ball Heroes, his counterpart achieves godly versions of Super Saiyan 2 and Super Saiyan 3, as well as full power of their altered Super Saiyan 3 during which their Tail regrows.
- Tuffle hybrids
Tuffle-Saiyans only existed in Age 789 as a result of Baby and his Tuffle Parasites invading Earth. Fully Tuffleized Saiyans have displayed their own variants of the golden-haired Super Saiyan forms known as the "Strongest Forms".
- Evolved Saiyans
The Saiyans of Universe 6 differ from their Universe 7 counterparts in that they never left Planet Sadala and are a more heroic species. Additionally, they have evolved so they no longer possess tails and subsequently can't access the Great Ape form through conventional means. They have displayed the ability to achieve the Super Saiyan form, as well as Super Saiyan 2.
In Dragon Ball Legends, Giblet refers to Cabba as a Neo Saiyan, though due to the Mastermind's manipulation Giblet is seemingly unaware that Cabba originates from Universe 6 and mistakenly groups him with the Modern Saiyans of Universe 7. Interestingly, Cabba has a chance to reveal this fact to Giblet when he accuses a confused Cabba of the same crimes committed by modern Saiyans such as Turles and members of Saiyan Army, but Zahha (during the period he was acting as a double agent) interrupts before Cabba can reveal that the Evolved Saiyans of Universe 6 had not fallen from the "true Saiyan way" (that the righteous Giblet and Shallot fought for in their era) due to Zahha convincing Cabba his words won't sway Giblet.
- Tuffle hybrids
Tuffle-Saiyans only existed in Age 780 as a result of Oren and Kamin invading Sadala. Fully Tuffleized Saiyans have displayed their own variants of the golden-haired Super Saiyan forms known as the "Strongest Forms".
Legendary Saiyans are a unique type of Saiyan that exist in both Universe 7 and Universe 6. An individual Legendary Saiyan is born once every 1,000 years in both universes. These Saiyans are demonic mutants and have massive power levels even upon birth. While not shown to be able to take on any normal Saiyan forms aside from the basic Great Ape, these Saiyans possess their own transformation line based around the Legendary Super Saiyan state.
Despite their demonic nature, Legendary Saiyans can be gentle hearted as shown by Kale of Universe 6 and Broly of Universe 7. However, because of their demonic nature, they can end up becoming violent, bloodthirsty, and destructive like the original Broly, his clone Bio-Broly, and alternate world counterpart Dark Broly. Because of their destructive tendencies legendary Saiyans are feared in both Universe 6 and 7, though in Universe 7 they are often associated with the legends pertaining to the Super Saiyan of Legend as the general Saiyan population in Universe 7 tends to be more barbaric and violent than their more evolved Universe 6 counterparts.
The Saiyans are a fighting race who, since ancient times, have lived a violent and inhumane lifestyle, where they attack numerous planets to build up wealth and goods.Dragon Ball GT: Perfect File speculates that Saiyans were originally Great Apes who gained intelligence and took on a humanoid form. As noted by Whis, "ancient Saiyans" possess different ki from the ones in the present time.
The previous Super Saiyan appeared approximately 1,000 years (3,000 in the Ocean Group dubs) prior to the Frieza Saga, approximately 238 Before Age, and is described by Vegeta as a Super Saiyan who could only retain his status in the transformed state. As per the story of the Super Saiyan God told from the Namekian Book of Legends, this Saiyan was an individual with a noble heart, and along some of his comrades, tried to stop their evil fellow Saiyans. However, he couldn't achieve his goal and perished. In the legend, Yamoshi appeared to have lost control and gave in to his destructive primitive desires, destroying himself with his own power, in actuality Yamoshi was killed by the evil Saiyans. The good Saiyans and evil Saiyans were in conflict for a long time, with the good Saiyans only ever managing to get one victory to their name, eventually the evil Saiyans wiped out the good Saiyans, and thus all modern day Saiyans are descended from them. At some point in the era of the conflict between good and evil Saiyans, Cumber fought for the evil Saiyans side, and seemingly encountered a Super Saiyan God - however Cumber was whisked away from the conflict and brought to the future by Fu as part of his plans. Similarly, Shallot and Giblet were among those who fought on the good Saiyans side, but were taken from their rightful time to participate in the Tournament of Time.
A small group of Saiyans eventually found their way to Planet Plant in Age 550, and the history of the Saiyans predating their conflict with the Tuffles was revealed in the anime, where it is discussed heavily during the Vegeta Saga, as well as in the OVA Plan to Eradicate the Saiyans. It is also a central theme in the Baby Saga of Dragon Ball GT. GT Perfect Files speculate the launching point of the Saiyan's spaceships as being the Saiyans' true homeland itself.
During the Vegeta Saga of Dragon Ball Z, King Kai describes the Saiyans as a group of barbaric aliens who shared a planet with a race known as the Tuffles. The Saiyans lived in the arid wastelands, while the Tuffles lived in great cities, employing advanced technology. Eventually the Saiyans attacked, vowing to conquer the Tuffle's great cities and extinguish the race. This sparked a ten year long war (described in greater detail below).
It is revealed in Plan to Eradicate the Saiyans that when the Saiyans arrived on Planet Plant, they were welcomed by the Tuffles. The Tuffle survivor, Dr. Lychee, then describes the horrors of the war in a similar fashion to the one King Kai tells. However whilst explaining, Vegeta states the Tuffles used the Saiyan race as slaves.
During the Baby Saga of Dragon Ball GT, Baby described the history of the Saiyans war with the Tuffles in a different manner. He states that the Saiyans first arrived in mysterious space-pods and attacked the Tuffles in cold blood. He states they were led by Vegeta's father, and upon the rising of the full moon, the Saiyans assumed their Great Ape transformations, completely wiping out the Tuffle race in a single night.
War with the Tuffles
Main article: Saiyan-Tuffle war
King Kai explained the story of the Saiyan race to Goku during the Vegeta Saga. He explains that around Age 720, a civil war broke out. The Saiyan Army tried many times to overthrow the Tuffles but were unsuccessful, sparking a ten-year conflict on the planet. Although the Saiyans were bigger in size and physically far superior, they were fewer in number compared to the Tuffles. The Tuffles had a trump card in the form of their technology to read the power levels of the Saiyans and advanced weaponry such as blasters to hold them off. Then, around Age 730, the Saiyans were able to transform into Great Apes thanks to the full moon that only appeared once every 100 years on the planet; with this, they finally annihilated the Tuffles and renamed the planet Planet Vegeta after their commanding hero, King Vegeta.
Meeting other races
King Kai goes on to explain that after their victory over the Tuffles, the Saiyans were approached by the Arcosians. These aliens had money and technology, but their planet was unsuitable, so they hired a group of Saiyans to take over a planet for them; in return, they would share their technology with them. Over the years, the Saiyans also learned how to use the Tuffles' advanced equipment and became smarter and less barbaric, although they still lusted for fighting and destruction.
Occupation by Frieza
Main articles: Kanassan war, Invasion of Planet Meat, and Genocide of the Saiyans
In Universe 7, according to Akira Toriyama, the Saiyans joined the Frieza Force when it was still under the command of King Cold, while according to Daizenshuu 7 around Age 731, about a year following the Saiyan victory over the Tuffles, the planet was conquered or annexed by Frieza's empire and the Saiyans (like many other races) were drafted to serve as soldiers in Frieza's military.
Due to the Saiyans' innate strength and penchant for violence, they were considered to be useful mercenaries and assisted in the conquering of many planets, or if assignment called for, eradication of the planet's population (even Saiyan children were considered powerful enough to conquer some of the weaker planets, such as Earth).
Eventually, seeing how quickly some of the more gifted Saiyan warriors were gaining power through battle, around Age 735, Frieza grew concerned with the potential of the Saiyan race and thought that they would grow strong enough to face him or even become the fabled Super Saiyans, able to defeat him in battle. In Age 737, a Saiyan scientist develops the Saibamen using biotechnology and those creatures make their way into the Galactic Frieza Army through the Saiyans. Soon, in Age 739 (2 years after Kakarot was born), the maniacal warlord Frieza destroyed Planet Vegeta, nearly eradicating the Saiyan race. There were only a few thousand Saiyans on the planet. As a warrior race, it would be difficult to increase their numbers (presumably, though left unsaid, because they would war with each other over superiority). The manga reveals only four pure-blood Saiyans who have survived the destruction: Kakarot (Goku), Vegeta, Nappa, and Raditz as they were not on the planet at the time. Once the latter three discovered that their planet was destroyed, Frieza lied to them that an asteroid had hit their world, and offered them continued employment in return for eventual wealth.
Over two decades later, the Saiyans were finally avenged when Goku defeated Frieza on planet Namek. Frieza later met his first death on Earth a year later, when Future Trunks killed him. In the Dragon Ball Z movies only, three more Saiyans survived the catastrophe: Turles, Broly and Paragus. In the manga and special Yo! Son Goku and His Friends Return!!, Vegeta's brother Tarble is shown as another survivor. In the manga Nekomajin Z, Onio appears. In Dragon Ball Super: Broly, Broly and Paragus are revealed to have survived. Two unnamed mid-class Saiyans are also shown to have survived the genocide, as they were on the same mission with Vegeta, Nappa and Raditz when Planet Vegeta was destroyed.
Survival through Earthlings
Main article: Earthling Goku, after suffering a head injury as an infant, lost all memory of his mission and past, and was raised as an Earthling. When he did find out about his heritage years later, he still considered Earth as his home. Goku married Chi-Chi, an Earthling who was his childhood sweetheart, and she bore him two half-breed sons, Gohan and Goten, and they later have a quarter-breed granddaughter, Pan. Vegeta would arrive in Earth with the intention of obtaining the Dragon Balls and destroying the planet, however, losing his battle against Goku and the conflict with taking down Frieza served as crucial epiphanies for Vegeta. After this, he ended up settling on Earth initially to wait for his rematch with Goku. Vegeta would later fall in love with and marry Bulma, who bore him two half-breed children, Trunks and Bulla. After more than 100 years since the Saiyans first came to Earth, there were fewer Saiyan descendants left, with Goku Jr., Vegeta Jr., Pan, and Bulma Leigh being the last survivors of the Saiyans.
Several Saiyan survivors were still around during Age 850, as shown in Dragon Ball Xenoverse, these Saiyans had become members of the Time Patrol.
By the time of the events of Dragon Ball Online, pure blooded Saiyans had become extinct in Universe 7, as the only survivors of the planet Vegeta's destruction were male. However, Goku and Vegeta's families had spread and so many Earthlings possessed hidden Saiyan genes, and thus the traits of the Saiyans, such as the potential to become Super Saiyan, and also to receive Saiyan Power. Many of these Earthlings with Saiyan traits joined the Time Patrol and soon awakened their hidden Saiyan powers.
In Universe 6, their history diverged from that of Universe 7, the Saiyans remain to be a thriving race with their original planet intact. They have also come to use their innate capacity for combat productively, fighting evil rather than causing it. Around 220 Before Age, a Legendary Saiyan appeared among the Universe 6 Saiyans.
Universe 6 Saiyans lack tails and can transform into a Super Saiyan with more ease once they obtain the knowledge of the transformation. However, the Universe 6 Saiyans were unaware of the existence of the Super Saiyan transformation until they were introduced to it by the Universe 7 Saiyans in Age 779 - with Cabba being the first Saiyan of Universe 6 to achieve the form. The only transformation that the Universe 6 Saiyans were aware of was the demonic Legendary Saiyan, with a Saiyan capable of transforming into it appearing once every 1,000 years.
Universe 6 Saiyans, similar to their counterparts, were employed by the emperor of the universe, Frost, in order to fight in wars on his behalf. In the anime there was the added distinction of Frost starting the wars himself for a profit duping his employees in the process until his exposure as a space pirate.
The two remaining Universe 7 Saiyans meet the Universe 6 Saiyan, Cabba in the Tournament of Destroyers years later after the genocide in Universe 7.
The Saiyans of the twin universes came to fight in combat in the Tournament of Power. When Team Universe 6 lost in the Tournament of Power, the Saiyans were erased with the rest of Universe 6. They were later revived when the erased universes were restored.
Saiyans are outwardly very similar to Human-type Earthlings, with the exception of their monkey-like tails. They are commonly seen to have black hair, black eyes (although the anime has occasionally shown brown, blue and blonde hair and purple eyes), and yellow skin. Naturally growing stronger as they mature, they gain a very muscular and well-defined build.
Vegeta states that the hair of a pure-blooded Saiyan does not deviate from its appearance from the day the Saiyan is born. However, it can fall off, as seen with the bald Nappa (he had hair in the TV special
