Best dry dog food, according to experts and veterinarians

Finding the best dog food for your furry friend takes effort, of course, but the convenience, price and assortment of dry dog food may make it a good option to consider for your pup. In commercials, the dry dog food kibbles hit the bowl and a good pup comes running — every pet owner might want that kind of love story for their dog, and dry dog food also sports some unique benefits for dogs (and their owners). “There are many benefits of dry food,” says Shelly Ferris, DVM, the regional director of Petco Veterinary Services. “It comes in several varieties. It doesn’t spoil easily. It keeps dogs’ teeth clean in between vet visits and you can easily transition your pet to new foods if needed.”

“For humans, it’s much easier to clean out a bowl and dry food can be left out for a longer time,” says Kristin Neuhauser, DVM, of Noah’s Ark Animal Clinic. “For dogs, the main benefit to being on a commercially-prepared dry dog food is that they are eating a complete and balanced diet.” Dry dog food, in essence, marries convenience and nutrition as much as possible. But which dry dog food should you get? We consulted experts about the differences between the leading dry dog foods and how to pick the best dry dog food for your canine companion.

How to shop for dry dog food

As with anything else regarding your pet, a good place to start is talking to your veterinarian — in this instance, about your dog’s dietary requirements. Then look at the ingredient list on a bag of dry dog food. “You can easily tailor a dry food diet to your pup's unique needs because it is convenient and available in a variety of flavors, formulas — from life-stage and breed-specific to weight management,” says Ferris.

While your dog can’t speak, their body can tell you a lot about whether or not you’ve picked the right brand of dry food, too. “Dogs should have stools that are of normal consistency, formed and relatively easy to pick up,” says Neuhauser, who also points out that a healthy coat and skin, and maintaining weight — not gaining or losing too much — are signs of good health.

When shopping for dog food, the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO), a nonprofit that helps set standards for animal feed and pet foods, recommends that you read the label, select a food based on your pet’s breed, age and health, and follow the manufacturer’s feeding guidelines. When it comes to ingredients like preservatives, Ferris suggests dog owners look for natural options over synthetic ones. “Natural preservatives such as vitamin C, vitamin E and oils of rosemary, clove or other spices are better alternatives to chemical preservatives such as BHA, BHT and ethoxyquin, which are often added in dog foods,” says Ferris.

Ol’ Roy Dog Food Review

Ol’ Roy Dog Food is a low budget dog food that comes under the Walmart banner. The dog food uses cornmeal as its major ingredient, supplemented with meat and bone meal and chicken byproduct as animal protein sources. Despite its less than impressive list of ingredients, Ol’ Roy Dog Food is one of the best-selling dog food brands in the country.

The big selling point for Ol’ Roy Dog Food is its low cost. Compared to premium dog foods, Ol’ Roy is extremely reasonable. However, a closer look at the ingredients is warranted if you do choose to feed your pet Ol’ Roy Dog Food.

Ol’ Roy Company Overview

Ol’ Roy Dog Food was named after Sam Walton’s dog Ol’ Roy. The brand was first launched in 1983. As a brand, Ol’ Roy Dog Food does not even have its own website. The pet food is owned by Walmart and made by Doane Pet Food, which, in turn, is owned by the Mars pet food division.

Mars is one of the largest pet food manufacturers in the country and makes several other brands of pet food. Before being acquired by Mars in 2006, Doane Pet Food was an independent pet food manufacturer. Walmart has never had its own manufacturing plant for Ol’ Roy Dog Food. The Mars pet food division headquarters is in Brentwood, Tennessee.

Ol’ Roy is the best-selling dog food in the United States according to some stats, but still only receives a one-star rating. The dog food brand has also been plagued with a number of recalls in the last thirty-five years.

In 1999, several brands of pet food including Ol’ Roy Dog Food made by Doane Pet Food were recalled due to contamination by a fungal toxin. In March 2007, hundreds of Ol’ Roy products were recalled as part of the melamine crisis. Again, in June 2007, Ol’ Roy Dog Food was recalled because of possible salmonella contamination.

Ol’ Roy Dog Food’s troubles continued with yet another recall in 2008 due to possible salmonella contamination. Early in 2018, Ol’ Roy Strips Turkey Bacon was recalled due to possible low levels of pentobarbital. Pentobarbital is used as a euthanizing agent and potentially fatal at higher levels.

Ingredients Found in Ol’ Roy Dog Food

The main ingredients in Ol’ Roy Dog Food are:

  • Corn
  • Meat and bone meal
  • Chicken by-product
  • Soybean meal
  • Animal fat
  • Corn gluten
  • Brewer’s rice
  • BHA as a preservative
  • Citric acid as a preservative
  • Artificial colors
  • Fortified with vitamins and minerals

There are a lot of concerns about the ingredients that Ol’ Roy uses in its dog food. Cornmeal is not a very good source of protein for dogs who absorb animal protein better. Even the animal proteins that are used are of low grade. In addition, Ol’ Roy Dog Food contains artificial colors and preservatives which are not healthy for animals in the long run.

Beyond dog food: Walmart adds pet insurance as animal adoptions soar during pandemic

Along with buying bags of dog and cat food, pet owners can now turn to Walmart to buy insurance and find a sitter for their beloved animals.

Starting Thursday, the retailer said it will sell pet insurance from Petplan and connect customers to dog walking and more through Rover. It is launching Walmart Pet Care, a new landing page on its website as a central hub where customers can find its full range of animal products and services.

Melody Richard, vice president of Walmart Pets, declined to share terms of the deals with Petplan and Rover. She said Walmart customers will get unique discounts and perks. Customers can save up to 10% on insurance policies by going through the big-box retailer and will get gift cards for Walmart if they book pet sitting or dog walking through Rover.

"We're focused on bringing our customers and the beloved pets in their lives trusted, convenient and affordable programs at one destination," she said. "And we'll continue to focus on that."

Walmart is adding to its pet offerings at a time when more Americans are adopting new dogs, cats and other critters. The pandemic pet boom has also turned chew toys, seasonal costumes and pet supplies into a popular gift-giving category this holiday season.

Even before the pandemic, pet care was a growing market. The U.S. pet care industry is projected to increase from a $53 billion market to about $64 billion over the next four years, according to Jefferies research.

That has increased competition between companies that want a bigger slice of the pie, including superstores like PetSmart and Petco, big-box retailers like Walmart and Target and e-commerce players like Chewy.

In late October, Chewy launched a telehealth offering that allows customers who subscribe to its AutoShip service to consult with a vet about common concerns. There's also potential for Walmart and Chewy to gain market share as some specialty pet retailers struggle. Pet Valu announced plans this month to shut down its 358 stores across the U.S.

Walmart estimates that 90 million pet owners shop at its stores and website. Last year, it launched an online pet pharmacy, WalmartPetRX, that sells prescriptions and hundreds of brands for dogs, cats, horses and livestock.

By offering multiple services, the retailer hopes pet owners will spend more at its stores. For example, customers who get pet insurance through Walmart may later get pet medications filled at its pharmacy.
