There are lots of posts on here about upgrading PCM to something more modern, but the ones I have found are a little dated. With technology moving as quickly as it does I wondered if anyone had replaced their head unit recently.

I have a Gen 1 with steering wheel controls and Bose

Can anyone recommend a 1 stop shop where I can get everything? Happy to fit it myself but unsure what I do and don’t need.

I'm in a Gen 2 - looking at getting a pioneer or Kenwood. With CarPlay, DAB, etc...

Quoted at about £800 all in. Just looking into it. Be nice to hear from someone who has already done it.

I've had many installs done at Unique in Lightwater
https://www.uniquecarsound.com/
Their attention to detail is excellent, great pricing etc and people come to them from across the UK due to huge Mercedes following and what they can do for the Mercedes Command system.
That being said they did a great double din, amp, and speaker install in my previous 4s 996 many years ago along with another stealth unstall in my Gallardo.
Give them a call and tell them Greg Wheeler sent you.. Its well worth the trip...

Ive fitted in the last two weeks an Android unit that is specifically designed for the 997 & 987 double din aperture.

Its the 3rd ive fitted and i couldn't be more pleased with them.

As there Android i can connect to my phone or home router and download apps from the Google Play store. Ive currently got x 3 Navigation apps and a customised media player for MP3 files or Bluetooth streaming.

NB. The previous owner had already changed the colour of the center console from silver to black.

I just fitted a rennline magnetic phone holder to the side of the PCM and put my phone there, the screen is almost as large as the PCM so I have the best of both worlds.......I also get to retain the ability to change some functions on the car via the PCM3 (ie if you have sport chrono you also get more car setting options via PCM)......worked for me great last year

I have Bluetooth music streamed via a plug in module fitted in the armrest so I can do everything via the phone and car speakers using an interface I use all the time. I also use the free tom tom amigo app in overlay mode, I’ve set it to boot up automatically when the phone connects to the cars Bluetooth and run it in overlay mode for camera alerts ie you only need to get in the car and you have camera alerts.....even works with the phone in my pocket as I can hear it warning me lol

Nb 987.2 and samsung 10 5G phone (large screen)

http://caraudiosecurity.com/ - They are in Hayes, the owner has a 997 GT3 and a 993.

Just had mine replaced with a Kenwood 8019. What a transformation!
It has some buttons and has a touch screen. Volume is done with updown buttons and I can activate Siri with a button.
It is night and day. I can now use Waze safely and make calls using Siri and have messages read out to me that I can reply to with voice instructions.
DAB radio is good and I can use all my radio apps via carplay.

Cost wise I got the stereo new off ebay for £390, and the fitting plus fitting kit was £170 and £175.
I have had the car several months now and had been working out if I should replace the PCM or not. Glad I did as it has transformed things fro me.

Couple of quick photos taken when i get home. The screen is a touch screen but i also like that this unit has button. Especially helpful are the up & down for volume and the one button that activates siri for voice control.
I can take more tomorrow to show Waze or Google maps. The next Kenwood model up has inbuilt nav but i do not see the point as i can bluetooth, wifi, cable my phone and the unit has a gps arial if you loose phone coverage.

I remember a guy who replace everything with an iPad mini quite some time ago. Not sure this will work now as we are on the 5th gen (?) but I can’t see why not. Here’s the link to the install:

https://rennlist.com/forums/997-forum/729871-ipad-mini-on-the-997-a.html

Obviously has the added benefit of being removed and thus can be use out of the car too. I seem to remember another install where a guy found someone who made bezels. The colour match and Porsche logo sticker he did were top drawer and looked OEM.

That made for a very interesting read. I was wondering though - how he played the radio through the standard amp and speakers. I thought I saw he used a Denison bluetooth, however would this not be powered up without the PCM connected?

I too am trying to plan which headunit to go for on my gen1. Id prefer satnav on the headunit rather than relying on phone connection, however apple car play would be handy too.

I picked my 997.2 on Friday, it has PCM 3 but with no phone module. Thought I'd check with Sheffield OPC about possibility of upgrade with phone module and map update, costs as follows:

Phone module £715 plus 3.5 hours labour
Map update £350 plus 30 mins labour

Labour at £150 per hour = £600

I'm not keen to fit an aftermarket head unit as I don't want to lose dedicated Porsche functionality, trip, fuel consumption etc., so will have to look for best blue tooth solution for my phone.

Im in the same position, whilst mine came with Phone Sim, Nav & CD changer I like the PCM features. Interesting if we can just buy an updated nav cd?

As for the Bluetooth, if i dont change the headunit I shall fit a Denison bluetooth. it plugs into the frunk instead of the CD changer and research shows its the best option. Sounds like its the option you are after

Wireless Apple CarPlay for Porsche PCM 3.1

This latest Aftermarket but OEM Style Retrofit will upgrade your Porsche Boxster, Cayman, 911, Cayenne, Panamera & Macan with Wireless Apple CarPlay as if it were there from factory. Suitable for all those models with PCM 3.1 or CDR31 Navigation System installed.

If your current vehicle has the PCM 3.1 Navigation system then this retrofit will allow you to get all the great options that Apple CarPlay has to offer such as Waze, Google Maps, Spotify, Tune-In and much more.

It’s well known on these two vehicles that it’s difficult / expensive to upgrade to something different such as nav or music streaming (Especially if you don’t have this at present). This system will give you that all important navigation function as well as Music playback from Apps such as Spotify. Simply and Easily! Remember CarPlay was never an option on this breed of vehicle from factory!

The advantage of this kit over the Genuine Setup (If it were available for this model range) is that it’s wireless. You can jump in your car and it will automatically connect up. You won’t have to worry about plugging something into your Glovebox or Armrest if you don’t want to.

Top Features:

  • Full Apple CarPlay Functionality for iPhone 5 and above
  • Use of Original Screen and Controls
  • Full GPS Navigation via Apple Maps, Google Maps or Waze
  • Music Streaming via Spotify, Apple Music etc
  • Handsfree Calling and Messaging via Siri
  • Can connect Wireless or Via Cable (To keep your device charged)

YouTube Video

Installed into a Porsche Panamera Turbo (2014) with PCM 3.1

Installed into a Porsche Cayman S (2014) with PCM 3.1. Also Upgraded with “Optional” Front & Rear Parking Camera

Installed into a Porsche Boxster 911 (2013) with CDR

Vehicle Compatibility

  • Porsche Boxster / Cayman / 911 – 2012 to 2016
  • Porsche Cayenne – 2010 to 2017
  • Porsche Macan – 2014 to 2016
  • Porsche Panamera – 2010 to 2016

Stereo Compatibility

  • PCM 3.1 System
  • CDR31 System

Please Note:

  • Currently this is a Supply & Fit option only at our workshop here in Poole, Dorset. Price includes Installation.
  • This is an aftermarket system designed to replicate the Porsche Apple CarPlay System
  • Must have Porsche PCM 3.1 with Nav Button or CDR31 (CDR Systems have an additional charge due to the extra work required)
  • Must have Aux as an option under “Media” for sound to output. This is normally in the centre armrest.
  • You can’t use the Factory Radio / DAB whilst using CarPlay due to the system having to be in Aux Mode. In this instance you would use Apps like Spotify or TuneIn (FM/DAB) for your music.
  • As part of the installation we must open up your PCM Unit to install an extra PCB Board and Ribbon Cables to allow CarPlay to interact with your PCM. If you have any existing warranty, opening up your system will void the warranty on the headnit.
  • Separate Microphone required for Hey Siri functionality
  • Apple CarPlay does not have the ability to show any information on our Dashboard / DIS

New Porsche infotainment: knows more, does more and is a better listener

The most important innovations include integrations of Apple Music and Apple Podcasts built into the PCM, and wireless Apple CarPlay support. In addition, Android Auto is included for the first time, and the Voice Pilot voice assistant can now understand instructions in natural language. The navigation system calculates faster and displays its information more clearly. PCM 6.0 also ensures that software updates will be possible using over-the-air technology – meaning updates can be carried out wirelessly. In the future, the PCM system could also become the digital basis for adaptive sound – music that dynamically adapts to driving style.

Flexible now also in the use of Android Auto

The scope of delivery of the new PCM 6.0 includes the integration of Android Auto. In addition to Apple iPhones, smartphones with the Google Android operating system can also now be integrated into the infotainment systems of the Porsche models. This happens automatically as soon as the mobile phone is connected to the vehicle via a USB cable, at which point phone functions and smartphone apps that do not impair driving safety can be operated via PCM 6.0.

Porsche seamlessly integrates Apple Music and Apple Podcasts

Porsche drivers with a subscription to Apple Music will have access to more than 75 million songs ad-free, thousands of editorially-curated playlists, and daily selections from the world’s best music experts, including all of the artists and hosts broadcasting across its Apple Music 1, Apple Music Hits, and Apple Music Country global livestream radio stations, via a three-year free in-car internet connection from Porsche.

Porsche Communication Management 6.0, 2021, Porsche AG

Porsche drivers also have access to millions of free shows from Apple Podcasts, the world's leading podcast platform, to be informed, entertained, and inspired on every drive. Customers can link their Apple ID to their vehicle in the Porsche Connect app or online at My Porsche to get started.

“We have succeeded in combining the classic radio experience with the modern streaming experience,” said Martin Bayer, Manager Navigation and Infotainment at Porsche AG. “It is not just about listening to audio content, but rather the in-depth integration of Apple Music and Apple Podcasts built into the Porsche infotainment system. With Apple Music built-in, the driver can add a song they hear on broadcast radio to their Apple Music library, or if the driver likes a particular artist on the radio they can switch to a custom Apple Music station that will only play that artist’s music.”

Porsche Communication Management 6.0, 2021, Porsche AG

Porsche vehicles equipped with the new PCM 6.0 also come with wireless Apple CarPlay support. Drivers can wirelessly connect their iPhone and get directions optimized for traffic, make calls, send and receive messages, and listen to music and podcasts simply by tapping the touchscreen display or using Siri voice control, all while staying focused on the road. The new PCM 6.0 also features Android Auto integration, which allows smartphones with Google’s Android operating system to be integrated into the infotainment system of Porsche models.

Voice Pilot is now more human

It is now possible to simply say, “Hey Porsche,” and have the vehicle carry out commands without the driver having to take their hands off the steering wheel or their eyes off the road.

Porsche Communication Management 6.0, 2021, Porsche AG

The sentence, “I need gas,” results in the navigation system finding a route to the next filling station. The phrase, “I am cold,” automatically increases the interior temperature. Massage seats and ambient lighting can also be controlled in a similar way on equipped models. Voice Pilot is permanently online and continually learns new phrases: over time, the system will keep improving, providing more and more support to the driver.

The navigation system is now even more powerful

The new hardware and software architecture of PCM 6.0 allows even faster calculations by the navigation system – always taking into account real-time traffic information. The significantly reduced and more clearly designed map view is also a factor that contributes to the speed at which information is provided.

Porsche Communication Management 6.0, 2021, Porsche AG

Using real-time traffic data, the roads are shown in different colors depending on the traffic situation. The route monitor allows quick access to all the relevant information, and traffic jams and waypoints along the route are clearly shown. The Porsche navigation system also shows traffic information for individual lanes.

More communication between human and machine

With PCM 6.0, Porsche brings the digital functions of the Taycan electric sports car to combustion engine models for the first time.

Porsche Communication Management 6.0, 2021, Porsche AG
Porsche Communication Management 6.0, 2021, Porsche AG

The interactive 'Good to Know' operating manual is integrated into the system, smartphone calendar entries are displayed on the PCM 6.0 touchscreen via the Porsche Connect app, and, if there is an active Bluetooth connection between the car and the smartphone, Porsche drivers can also dial into conference calls using the calendar service. Software updates for the infotainment system are also available via over-the-air technology.

Porsche will compose the music of the future

Dynamic driving could also soon be accompanied by matching music. The new Soundtrack My Life app from Porsche Digital, which is currently still at the beta version stage, will launch with the world’s first adaptive sound function. The app does not just compile a playlist, but creates a personal soundtrack in real-time.

This consists of specially-composed music elements and is truly adaptive as it changes based on driving style. In the case of a spirited drive on country roads, the music played will be different to that chosen for a steady cruise to the office. If this calls to mind the background music of computer games, where the soundtrack changes depending on the situation that is not far off. However, the soundtracks can also be enjoyed outside the car via the smartphone.
