Other Enchantments

There are other enchantments in Minecraft such as:

Sours: https://www.digminecraft.com/enchantments/thorns.php

Minecraft Enchantment is a powerful way to increase the abilities of your items. Enchantments can be applied to your defensive items like armor, helmets, boots, etc as well as to your offensive items like a sword, pickaxe, crossbow, etc. These enchantments give you additional benefits during fighting with hostile mobs.

Thorns Minecraft is an offensive enchantment for your armor. This enchantment deals with damage to the hostile mobs which attack us. The chance of inflicting damage back varies between 15-45% depending on the level of your enchantment. This enchantment is really useful if you love to take instant revenge on your enemies. This enchantment helps in situations where you are surrounded by enemies.

What exactly is Thorns Minecraft?

Thorn is an enchantment in Minecraft that allows the attacking mobs to damage if they hit you. Imagine this effect as a thorny shield. Every time a mob gets closer to you and attacks, it takes reverse damage due to the thorns. This amazing enhancement allows the players to survive in critical conditions and keeps them alive.

What are the advantages of Thorns Minecraft?

Thorns enchantment is just like Pufferfish‘s self-defense mechanism. When someone (player or mob) attacks you, this enchantment will give them damage back. This enchantment can be applied to your Helmet, Chestplate, Leggings, Boots, and Turtle Shell.

Thorns Minecraft Damage

This enchantment is allowed to be stacked. What that means is, you can use Thorns Minecraft enchantment on your Helmet as well as your Chestplate and both of its effects will add up. Stacking is a great way to maximize the potential of certain enchantments. Did you know that –

The stacking effect was a bug from developers, but over time it became a feature amongst many games.

This stacking of Thorns enchantment is capped at the damage of 4 i.e 2 heart Bars. Thorns enchantment has a 15% chance of returning the damage to the attackers per level. This is given by the formula –

What it means is, there is a 15% chance of inflicting damage on the attacker at level 1 Thorns, there is a 30% chance of inflicting damage on the attacker at level 2 Thorns Minecraft, and so on.
Thorns enchantment also knockback the attacker. This is very useful when you are surrounded by many mobs.

There are some other enchantments like Minecraft Piercing which also helps you when fighting with mobs.

What is the maximum level of Thorns Minecraft?

The maximum level for Thorns Minecraft is 3. The details of every level is as follows –

1. Thorns I –

Thorns I have a 15% chance of laying damage to the attacker. Thorns 1 is useless if you are attacked by many mobs.

2. Thorns II –

Thorns II has a 30% chance of laying damage. Thorns 2 if effective but not the best level of enchantment I would say. Even if you stack this level of enchantment it will not work great because every thorn enchantment’s chance is independent.

3. Thorns III –

Thorns III has a 45% chance of imposing damage on the attacker. Thorns 3 is useful when many mobs attack you together. Thorns 3 helps the most because of its knockback capability.

How to do Thorns Minecraft echantment?

Applying Thorns to your items is a very easy process. You need Lapis Lazuli, enchanting table, or Anvil to do this. Lapis Lazuli is a bluish item that is used in enchanting.

1. Go to the enchanting table

The enchanting table is used to apply enchantment to any item at the cost of your XP. The table gives random applicable enchantments to your item. To increase the level of receivable enchantments, you need to cover the enchantment table with bookshelves. A total of 15 bookshelves is enough to get you the maximum level of any enchantment.

Minecraft enchanting table

After reaching the enchantment table, open the enchanting menu.

2. Place Armor & Lapis Lazuli

Thorns Minecraft Enchantment

Nextly, place the Armor and Lapis Lazuli in the desired boxes of the menu. This will enchant the armor and show you the available enchantments for your armor on right side.

3. Select Thorns Enchantment

Now select the Thorns III enchantment from the right side. This will attach the enchantment to your armor. That’s it, your enchantment of Thorns III is complete. Now go and hunt some zombies.

Other Enchantments

Piercing Enchantment
Impaling Enchantment

Final Words

To summarize, Thorns Minecraft is no doubt a powerful enchantment for your defensive items. Although it comes at a cost of armor durability, still Thorns III is really worth it. The knockback effect really helps in difficult scenarios.
Based on your interest in Thorns enchantment, you may also like Impaling Enchantment which is one of the best enchantments for your Trident.

Thorns enchantment in Minecraft: Everything players need to know

Thorns is a Minecraft armor enchantment that causes entities to take damage when they attack the player.

Thorns I and II can naturally be obtained from drops, trades with certain villagers or loot located in various structures throughout Minecraft.

Meanwhile, Thorn III cannot directly be obtained using an enchantment table. It can only be acquired by using an anvil to combine Thorns I and Thorns II. It can also be obtained by trading with villagers or by finding an enchanted item with Thorns III already applied in a loot chest.

Thorns usage in Minecraft

While wearing any piece of armor with the Thorns enchantment, the wearer has a Level x 15% chance of inflicting anywhere between 1-4 hit points (equal to half to two hearts) of damage on anyone who attacks them. When the attacker lands a hit, whether it be melee or ranged, they will get knocked back when being attacked by the enchantment.

When the player is wearing multiple armored items with the Thorns enchantment, the enchantment stacks. Each piece adds an independent chance of dealing damage to the attacker, as described above. The total amount of damage that can be dealt this way is 4 hit points (equal to 2 hearts).

A chart depicting Thorns damage (via Minecraft Wiki)

While the Thorns enchantment might seem too good to be true, there is one downside. The enchantment applies a durability penalty to the armor, which means that it reduces durability by an additional 2 points when it is inflicting damage. If multiple armor pieces are enchanted with Thorns, the penalty is applied to one piece of armor that is chosen at random, regardless of which Thorns level is applied.

However, to counteract the setback above, the player can add the Unbreaking enchantment to their armor.

It should be noted that Thorns cannot be applied to weapons or tools naturally. The player will have to be in Creative or use game commands in order to apply the enchantment to non-armor items.

Sharpness MAX vs. Thorns MAX in Minecraft (WHO WILL WIN?)

Thorns is an enchantment in Minecraft that is applied to armor so that when a player or creature physically attacks you, they take damage from your armor enchanted with Thorns.

Thorns Minecraft enchantment

How the Thorns enchantment works

You can add the Thorns enchantment to any piece of armor such as a helmet, breastplate, leggings, or boots by using a table, anvil, or command. You will then need to wear the enchanted armor to deal damage to opponents who touch you.

Armor items with the Thorns enchantment stack up. Each piece confers an independent chance to do damage to the attacker. The total amount of damage that can be inflicted this way is capped at 4 ♥.

The probabilities of inflicting maximum damage and average damage dealt based on the number of Thorns III pieces carried are as follows:

Objects with Thorns IIIProbability of damage max. (4)Average damage incurred
111.25%1.125
228.83%1.997
346.33%2.637
461.18%3.09

Thorns applies a durability penalty to armor. The enchantment reduces durability by an additional 2 points when it deals damage. If multiple pieces of armor are enchanted with Thorns, the durability penalty is applied to a randomly selected piece, regardless of the Thorns level of that piece. If the item is also enchanted with Unbreaking, the damage penalty has a chance to be ignored.

If a projectile is thrown at an opponent equipped with Thorns, using a shield damages the shield instead of the player when the projectile hits the opponent.

How to Obtain the Thorns Enchantment
In addition to the normal enchantment, Thorns I and II can be obtained naturally from creature drops, by trading with a villager or as loot from generated structures.

Thorns III cannot be obtained directly from an enchantment table, but can be obtained by using an anvil to combine two Thorns II enchantments, trading with villagers, or finding an enchanted item with it in the Looting Chest as below.

The enchanted book with Thorns III can be found in the following structures:

  • Underground Structures
    • Abandoned mine shafts
    • Stronghold
  • Underwater Structures
  • Surface Structures
    • Desert Pyramid
    • Jungle Pyramid [JE only] or Jungle Temple [BE only]
    • Pillager Outpost
    • Wooden Manor
  • Various structures

Thorns III enchanted armor pieces can be found in the following structures:

  • Shipwreck
  • Ruined Portal
  • Nether
  • Bastion remnant
  • Ruined Portal
  • City of End
  • Guardians and pufferfish naturally have a Thorns effect that deals damage when their spikes are extended.

The maximum level for the Thorns enchantment is level 3. This means that you can enchant an item with up to Thorns III. The higher the level, the more powerful the enchantment.

Thorns is an armorenchantment that causes attackers to be damaged when they deal damage to the wearer.

Guardians and elder guardians have a Thorns-like effect which inflicts damage when their spikes are out. However, this only affects melee damage, whereas the enchantment applies to all direct attacks, including ranged.

Usage[]

While wearing any piece of armor with the Thorns enchantment, the wearer has a chance of inflicting 1♥–4♥♥ damage on anyone who attacks them, regardless of whether they were hit by a melee attack, arrow, or other projectile. The entity also gets knocked back when being attacked by the enchantment.‌[JE only][1]

Multiple worn armor items with the Thorns enchantment do stack. Each piece confers an independent chance to deal damage to the attacker as described above. The total amount of damage that can be dealt this way is capped at 4♥♥.

Probabilities of inflicting maximum damage and average damage dealt depending on the number of items with Thorns III worn are as follows:

Thorns applies a durability penalty to the armor. It reduces durability by an additional 2 points when inflicting damage. If multiple armor pieces are enchanted with Thorns, the durability penalty is applied to one piece chosen at random, regardless of what level of Thorns that piece has. If the item is also enchanted with Unbreaking, the damage penalty has a chance of being ignored.

If a projectile is launched toward an opponent equipped with thorns, using a shield damages the shield instead of the player when the projectile hits the opponent.

Using commands, the enchantment level can be increased. The maximum possible chance of dealing damage is 100% (at level 7). If the level of Thorns exceeds 10, then it deals damage.

In Java Edition although horse armor cannot be enchanted in Survival, the Thorns enchantment can be applied to horse armor in Creative and it works.

Obtaining[]

In addition to normal enchanting, Thorns I and II can be obtained naturally from drops, fishing, trading with a villager or as loot from generated structures.

Thorns III cannot be directly obtained using an enchanting table, but it can be obtained by using an anvil to combine two Thorns II enchantments, by trading with villagers, or by finding an item enchanted with it from the loot chest as below.

The enchanted book with Thorns III can be found within the following structures:

Underground structures

Underwater structures

Aboveground structures

Miscellaneous structures

Pieces of armor enchanted with Thorns III can be found within the following structures:

Underwater structures

Small structures

The Nether

The End

Thorns can be applied to a non-armor item only by using creative mode, commands or a third-party tool. When such an item is held in either hand, an attacker suffers damage according to the formula above.

Why Some Minecraft Enchantments Are RUBBISH!

How the Thorns enchantment works in Minecraft

A piece of armor with the Thorns enchantment in Minecraft has a chance to cause enemies to suffer damage when attacking the player who is wearing it.

Minecraft players can punish the enemies of the game world for attacking them, by wearing armor that is enchanted with Thorns. Enemies who attack a player that is wearing a piece of Thorns enchanted armor have a chance to take damage in retaliation.

This means that using the Thorns enchantment can be a fun way for players to naturally go on the offensive against multiple mobs at once.

Players have a chance to deal damage and even possibly kill mobs without ever attacking back, so long as they are wearing Thorns enchanted armor. The Thorns enchatment isn't perfect by any stretch of the imagination, but it can be quite fun to use.

This article breaks down how the Thorns enchantment works in Minecraft and explains how players can get it on their own pieces of armor.

How the Thorns enchantment works in Minecraft

The Thorns enchantment can be placed on any piece of armor, such as chestplates, helmets, leggings, and boots. Minecraft players who do not already have armor can refer to this guide, which details how to craft a full set of iron armor.

Minecraft players can also obtain armor by killing a variety of different hostile mobs, looting from specific structure chest, or by buying pieces from amorer villager.

Enemies who attack a player with the Thorns enchantment will always take damage when the effect procs, no matter what form of combat was used. As an example, the proc will still have the same effect for attacks from melee hits, arrows, or even a snowball.

The entity who attacked the player wearing Thorns enchanted armor will also suffer a small knockback effect.

There are three levels of the Thorns enchantment that players can get under normal conditions in survival mode. Each level of the enchantment will progressively increase the chance for the retaliate effect to proc.

When the effect of the Thorns enchantment procs, players deal between half a heart to two hearts worth of damage to the entity who attacked them.

The maximum amount of damage that a player can deal to any mob who attacks them is two hearts worth of health, per attack against them. Unfortunately, players are not able to deal any more damage than this in a single proc.

Minecraft players are welcome to wear as many pieces of thorns enchanted armor as they desire, but they will only ever be able to deal a capped amount of damage.

However, each additional piece of Thorns enchanted armor has it's own independent chance to proc. This means that players can maximize their chances for procs, by getting the Thorns enchantment on all four of their armor pieces.

The only way for players to get a 100% chance to deal damage with Thorns is with the use of console commands.

Getting the Thorns Enchantment

An enchanting table in Minecraft (Image via Sportskeeda/Minecraft)

Thorns can be placed on any piece of armor by using an enchanting table, expending experience, and also some lapis lazuli.

This enchantment can also be placed on a piece of equipment with an anvil and the correct corresponding enchantment book.

Minecraft players should note that Thorns III cannot be obtained from the enchanting table, and players will need two combine two Thorns II enchanted armor pieces at an anvil in order to get Thorns III.

Players can also find an enchanted book for Thorns III in chests found in mineshafts, strongholds, ocean ruins, desert temples, jungle temples, pillager outposts, woodland mansions, and dungeons.
