After the murder of her father, Ryuuko Matoi has been wandering the land in search of his killer. Following her only lead—the missing half of his invention, the Scissor Blade—she arrives at the prestigious Honnouji Academy, a high school unlike any other. The academy is ruled by the imposing and cold-hearted student council president Satsuki Kiryuuin alongside her powerful underlings, the Elite Four. In the school's brutally competitive hierarchy, Satsuki bestows upon those at the top special clothes called "Goku Uniforms," which grant the wearer unique superhuman abilities. Thoroughly beaten in a fight against one of the students in uniform, Ryuuko retreats to her razed home where she stumbles across Senketsu, a rare and sentient "Kamui," or God Clothes. After coming into contact with Ryuuko's blood, Senketsu awakens, latching onto her and providing her with immense power. Now, armed with Senketsu and the Scissor Blade, Ryuuko makes a stand against the Elite Four, hoping to reach Satsuki and uncover the culprit behind her father's murder once and for all. Best Aniplex Anime (Ranked By MyAnimeList)

Studio Aniplex is a Japanese animation and music production company that was founded in 1995, 25 years ago. The company is a veteran in the industry space, famous for producing hits like Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood and Gintama, among others.

RELATED: Worst Studio Aniplex Anime (Ranked By MyAnimeList)

It's also owned by Sony Music Entertainment Japan and produces original soundtracks for all of Sony Computer Entertainment's computer and video games. Their reach doesn't stop there as they are even involved in retail merchandising and event organization. This multifaceted company has been responsible for a lot of anime on top of its other duties. This list will attempt to run down the 10 best Aniplex produced anime shows.

10 Great Teacher Onizuka (8.71)

Great Teacher Onizuka, follows the antics of a biker gang leader known as Onizuka Eikichi. Specifically, it follows his life after he gives up crime and delinquency in favor of his new ambition to become a teacher.

His motivation isn't that innocent, however, as his main goal in teaching is to meet attractive high school girls and end his lifelong dry spell. Things don't come that easily as he's dogged by administrators and students who want to drive him away. It makes for a full-hearted comedic show that isn't afraid to sprinkle in dramatic moments.

9 Rurouni Kenshin: Meiji Kenkaku Romantan - Tsuioku-hen (8.75)

This dramatic samurai shounen is a prequel that takes place before the Rurouni KenshiTV series and in its short run, it takes liberties and varies wildly from how its precursor handled things. Most notable is a removal of comedic scenes in favor of a focus on the dramatic and more serious moments.

The show's main character is a young boy known as Kenshin Himura who is rescued from bandits by a mysterious interloper. The show follows bloody sword fights while maintaining a strong focus on the character development of the protagonist as he struggles to find his place in the world.

8 Monogatari Series: Second Season (8.77)

In this second season of the well known Monogatari series, the show continues with a focus on the supernatural occurrences that happen around the main cast.

This cast consists of Koyomi Araragi, Tsubasa Hanekawa, Shinobu Oshino, Suruga Kanbaru, Mayoi Hachikuji, Nadeko Sengoku and Hitagi Senjogahara. This show makes a lot of room for each of the characters in the large cast to shine. But what really makes this show a standout is its unusual format of storytelling with a focus on in-depth discussions and a unique art style that is impossible to miss.

7 Mushishi Zoku Shou (8.80)

This show shows up twice in the top ranks of MyAnimeList so it has been ranked by its highest ranking season. Mushishi Zoku Shoufollows the continued travels of Mushishi Ginko as he journeys around helping the world and its people coexist with the mysterious spirits, called Mushi, that inhabit the land.

It takes a largely segmented format with minimal overarching plot where Ginko is confronted with a new situation or problem to resolve in each episode. These slices of his life touch on deep themes like hatred, regret, and despair to tell fantastic tales of humanity and magical beings.

6 Your Lie In April (8.83)

Your Lie In Aprilis a dramatic story about music, romance, and passion. In it, viewers follow a highly talented pianist Kousei Arima who has stopped playing the piano since the death of his mother, two years ago.

His musicless life is shaken up when he meets a gorgeous violinist, Kaori Miyazono, who stirs in him a desire to play the piano once more and to rediscover his passion and love for the art form. This is a series about recovery and learning to heal from trauma and it does so with aplomb with its deeply realized characters and compelling storyline.

5 Kimetsu no Yaiba (8.87)

This action-packed supernatural adventure aired in 2019 to popular acclaim. It follows Tanirou Kamado a boy who has had to support his family since the passing of his father. His peaceful life is disrupted when he gets trapped in the woods with a strange man who tells him about ravenous demons that appear at night.

The next day he finds that his whole family has been murdered with one exception, his sister Nezuko who has been turned into a destructive demon herself. Filled with a desire for vengeance he joins a group of demon slayers. This show excels in the animation department, with a cast of excellent villains and awesome fight choreography.

4 Owarimonogatari (8.93)

Another entry in the Monogatari series graces this list in the form of Owarimonogatari. At the center of its plot is returning main character Koyomi Araragi, who finds himself in an odd deserted void after an encounter with paranormal specialist Izuko Gaen.

In this void, he must maneuver through the web of his past and present as he searches for the answers that will explain what is happening. This show acts as the conclusion of one of the series' main storylines and does so admirably, pulling together threads from all throughout the show's run to make for a unique and fitting anime.

3 March Comes In Like A Lion (9.04)

This show also shows up multiple times in the top 10 so it has been placed by its highest ranking entry. March Comes In Like A Lion is a gorgeously animated drama that follows a pro shogi player Rei Kiriyama. Rei lives alone away from family and has a reclusive and isolated lifestyle.

His depressive habits are interrupted when he meets a trio of sisters after moving to Tokyo and slowly a close bond forms between all of them. Supported by a great soundtrack, this slow-paced show is an exploration of apathy and how it can be overcome.

2 Gintama (9.11)

This long-running comedy shows up multiple times throughout MyAnimeList's upper echelons, so like other entries in this list it has been ranked by its highest-scoring season. In it, viewers are thrust into a feudal Japan that has been taken over by aliens.

The main cast is made up of a samurai Gintoki Sakata, average boy Shinpachi Shimura and the exceptionally strong Kagura. Together they take on a variety of odd jobs in the strange world they inhabit, and naturally, a variety of humorous situations ensue. This absurd show takes elements from eastern and western comedy, mixing it all together for its own unique taste.

1 Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (9.23)

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhoodis considered by many to be one of the greatest anime shows. Even its genre stands out with its unique mix of action, comedy, military, and fantasy coming together to form an amazing spectacle. The plot mainly follows the Elric brothers, Edward and Alphonse, who are alchemists capable of transmuting materials into differing forms.

After losing parts of their bodies in an accident, they seek the power of the Philosopher's Stone to repair the damage done. This simple premise unfolds into a much larger drama with a whole host of side characters and subplots revealing themselves in the course of their epic adventure. It's a wild, fun ride from start to finish.

Aniplex Inc. (株式会社アニプレックス, Kabushiki-gaisha Anipurekkusu) is a Japanese anime and music production company owned by Sony Music Entertainment Japan. Established in September 1995, Aniplex has been involved in the planning, production and distribution of several anime series, such as Fullmetal Alchemist, Sword Art Online, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, Fate, the Monogatari series, Angel Beats!, The Promised Neverland, Rurouni Kenshin, and more. Additionally, Aniplex produces and distributes music and soundtrack records, including the original soundtracks for all of Sony Interactive Entertainment's computer and video games.

Aniplex is also involved in retail merchandising, producing toys, games, stationery, food and other items featuring popular characters. In addition, Aniplex puts together events to promote their anime franchises. For example, in 2005 Aniplex held the Fullmetal Alchemist Festival which began with the Fullmetal Alchemist Tour at Universal Studios Japan.

Aniplex is a full member of The Association of Japanese Animations[3] and an associated member of Japan Video Software Association.[4]

History[edit]

Originally known as Sony Pictures Entertainment (SPE) Visual Works Inc., it was established in September 1995 as a joint-venture between Sony Pictures Entertainment Japan and Sony Music Entertainment Japan, and changed its name in January 2001[1] to Sony Music Entertainment (SME) Visual Works Inc. after becoming a subsidiary completely owned by Sony Music Entertainment Japan. In April 2003, it changed its name to Aniplex Inc.[1]

In 2004, Aniplex launched the Sugi Label, which releases the works of Koichi Sugiyama—the composer of the music for Dragon Quest,[5] but since 2009 it was sold to King Records.

In March 2005, the company established its Santa Monica, California-based subsidiary Aniplex of America to reinforce its licensing business in the North American market,[1] and later that same year in May 2005, it established its own animation studio called A-1 Pictures.[1]

In March 2015, Aniplex announced that it had formed a joint venture with German anime distributor Peppermint Anime, forming Peppermint Anime GmbH. The joint venture allows for Aniplex to begin their expansion in the European market.[6] In April 2015, Aniplex announced that it had invested in French anime streaming service Wakanim, becoming the majority shareholder for the company, allowing Aniplex to enter the French market, and strengthening their European presence.[7]

On February 17, 2018, it was revealed that Aniplex had become a minority shareholder in the Australian-based company Madman Anime Group, and was issued an undisclosed number of shares in the company on November 15, 2017.[8] Aniplex later acquired Madman Anime Group from Madman Media Group for A$35 million in February 2019.[9][10]

On October 1, 2018, Aniplex established Rialto Entertainment, a subsidiary responsible for independent video production, and licensing of produced video content. The subsidiary appointed Aniplex deputy president Tadashi Ishibashi as the subsidiary's representative director, and Aniplex producer Eiichi Kamagata as the subsidiary's president.[11]

In April 2019, Aniplex announced that it established a Chinese subsidiary, Aniplex (Shanghai), in order to produce and release Chinese animation within the region, as well as establishing a storefront for Chinese consumers.[12]

On September 24, 2019, Aniplex announced that it would be consolidating Madman Anime Group and Wakanim with Sony Pictures Television's Funimation, under a joint-venture between the two Sony businesses.[13]

On December 26, 2019, Aniplex announced it would be launching a novel game brand named ANIPLEX.EXE, with ATRI: My Dear Moments and Adabana Odd Tales (徒花異譚, Adabana Itan) being the first titles being released under the brand.[14] ANIPLEX.EXE will also release titles in English territories through Aniplex of America.[15]

On April 1, 2020, Aniplex established Boundary, a subsidiary focusing on 3D CG, with Aniplex producer Akira Shimizu becoming the company's president.[16]

Aniplex held Aniplex Online Fest,[17] a virtual anime convention, on July 4-5, 2020. The event featured the latest updates on anime adaptations produced by Aniplex, panels with staff and cast members, and musical performances. Sally Amaki of 22/7 (Nanabun no Nijūni) served as the emcee for the English version, streaming worldwide on YouTube. A Chinese podcast was available on Bilibili.[18][19][20]

After the successful inaugural event, which garnered more than 800,000 viewers from around the globe, Aniplex announced the return of Aniplex Online Fest on July 3, 2021.[21] The second edition lineup included updates on Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, Sword Art Online the Movie -Progressive- Aria of a Starless Night, and Fate/Grand Order with musical performances by Aimer, ClariS, LiSA, ReoNa, and SawanoHiroyuki[nZk].[22] Sally Amaki returned to host the show alongside Maxwell Powers.[23][24][25]

On February 1, 2021, Aniplex announced it had entered in a capital tie-up with game developer f4samurai, allowing for Aniplex to further expand into gaming.[26]
