Superformance

Superformance LLC (Superformance Replicars) is an Americanautomobile company that builds, designs, develops, engineers and markets sports cars, related performance components and full replicars. The company was founded as "Superformance International Inc." by Hi-Tech Automotive Ltd. in 1996. Today, Superformance has 15 authorized dealers in the United States[2] and 6 international dealers. SPF cars are sold as "turnkey-minus replacers". In December, 2005 Hi-Tech Automotive transferred the ownership of its subsidiary, Superformance, to American Hillbank Automotive Group,[3] which is a privately owned business of American entrepreneur Lance Stander.[4] Hi-Tech Automotive continue to build Superformance cars at its plant in Port Elizabeth, South Africa.[5][6]

Current models[edit]

An example of a Superformance Shelby Daytona Coupe "roller" immediately after being unpacked from its container.

As "Replicars", all models sold by Superformance are complete factory manufactured "rollers", only missing the engine and transmission. Individual Superformance dealers will install selected engines in the cars after the customer has bought the roller.

Superformance MKIII[edit]

The Superformance MKIII is a replica of the third generation 427 Shelby Cobra and is available in both semi-competition and street roadster body styles. The SPF MKIII makes up the bulk of the company's sales. The SPF MKIII is also one of the few Shelby Cobra replicas built under license from Carroll Shelby. When the Customer purchases a MKIII they receive a complete rolling chassis that only requires an engine with accessories, transmission, drive shaft and various hoses, nuts and bolts to complete. The car is complete with suspension, rear differential, wiring and instrumentation. In this way a MKIII can have a stable "factory" build quality and also be personalized by its owner/completion company.

While most MKIIIs are powered by 351 Windsor-based Ford engines, options for 289/302 blocks and big block FE or 385 family Ford engines are possible. The MKIII differs from most other Cobra replicas as being of 100% new parts and not decades old rebuilt items. The current MKIII (late 2007+ production) uses Wilwood disk brakes and a Dana rear end assembly. Other major components are off-the-shelf parts of various new OEM manufacturers. The MKIII enjoys a loyal and helpful owners network that communicate in various internet forums/clubs providing user-to-user technical support and suggestions. The MKIII car was featured in an article in the September 2008 issue of Classic Motorsports magazine.

The Superformance MKIII is built under license from Carroll Shelby.[7]

Superformance MKII Slab Side and FIA[edit]

The newest models, the Superformance MKII Slab Side and FIA are designed to emulate the great Cobra 289 street cars from the golden era of racing in the 1960s. Unlike most competitors, these Supeformance replicas of the Slab Side and FIA are built on the successful Tojeiro-styled round tube chassis and features an authentic transverse leaf spring suspension. The MKII Slab Side and FIA are the latest licensed Shelby product in the Superformance lineup.[8][9]

Shelby Daytona Coupe – CSX9000 Series[edit]

Superformance Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe in Chicago

The Shelby Daytona Coupe or CSX9000 Series, originally known as the "SPF Brock Coupe", is a continuation of the 1965 FIA GT World Championship-winning Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe. The SPF Coupe was designed by Peter Brock, the designer of the original Daytona Coupe for Shelby American.

Production of the SPF Coupe ran from 2003 to 2009. Several modifications were made to the car and it is now being sold as the Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe (CSX9000 series) through authorized Shelby Automobile dealers. Unlike other Superformance replicars, the CSX9000 coupe is available with either a fiberglass or aluminum body.

The Shelby Daytona Cobra Coupe is licensed by Carroll Shelby and each vehicle and owner is recorded into the Shelby registry.[10]

Superformance GT40 continuation series[edit]

The first Superformance GT40s to be built are replicas of the famous Ford GT40 MkII A that finished first, second, and third overall at the Le Mans 24 Hour Race in 1966. The Superformance GT40 differs from other Ford GT40 replicas in that it is the "only one to be built with a monocoque chassis that is an exact replica of the original".[11] In fact, over 90% of the SPF GT40's parts are interchangeable with the original MkII A.[12] The Superformance GT40 is so close to the original that it is currently being evaluated for historic racing eligibility.[13] Some major differences between the two cars include the addition of a hidden air conditioning unit, modern brakes, and a conversion to left hand drive layout. Right hand drive, non-airconditioned versions are also available, marketed as the GT40/R. The Superformance GT40 has the "Gurney bump" which can be ordered as an option for taller drivers.

The Superformance GT40 is an authorized continuation series, licensed by Safir Spares LLC.

Upcoming versions will include the MkI and FIA versions.

Corvette Grand Sport continuation series[edit]

In January 2009, Superformance and the Duntov Motor Company LLC of Farmers Branch TX announced a partnership to create a continuation series of the street version of the legendary 1963 Corvette Grand Sport (Duntov will produce the racing version under the agreement).

The Superformance Corvette Grand Sport is being built true to the original body shape and configuration, and is available in both coupe and roadster body styles. All new precise modern production molds have been produced to assure consistent and correct bodies. Superformance built street cars feature the original Grand Sport round tube style frame. Superformance Corvette Grand Sports have power brakes, power windows and locks with all the amenities needed in a modern high-performance automobile. As with its other cars, the Superformance Corvette Grand Sport is offered as a complete turnkey-minus unit ready to accept the customer’s choice of engine and transmission.

A continuation of the 1963 Corvette Grand Sport is built by Superformance under license from General Motors Company.[14]

Former models[edit]

Superformance S-1 roadster[edit]

The Superformance S-1 roadster is a modern rendition of the Lotus Super 7. The S-1 was specifically conceived to accommodate “6-foot 4-inch, 250-pound Americans,”[15] a feat that few Lotus 7 replicas could accomplish. Apart from the increased size, the S-1 has several aerodynamically beneficial features, weatherproof soft top, windows, adjustable foot pedals, heated front windshield, primitive interior heating, as well as a 5-cubic-foot (140 L) lockable trunk. Front suspension uses double A-arms, while the rear uses a solid axle controlled by a "Mumford link" with bel-crank operated coil-over shocks. The SPF S-1s are generally powered by a version of Ford's 2.0L Zetecinline-4 and are usually naturally aspirated although a few supercharged examples were produced. A Ford Type-9 5-speed manual transmission is usually installed.[16] The production run of the S-1 ended in March 2004 after a total of 56 cars had been produced.

Caterham distribution[edit]

Caterham Series 3 Super Seven

As of the start of 2014, Superformance is the official distributor for Caterham in the United States. International demand for Caterham Sevens have increased dramatically in part due to the addition of a F1 Race team and the changes in Caterham's structure focusing on the distribution of the Seven worldwide. Caterham has since introduced a new model line up and focused on their production and production times to better suite their new international market, making their partnership with Superformance possible. Superformance will stock a range of Seven variants, primarily the higher-power incarnations of the car, which have traditionally been more popular in the American market. The range will include the Seven 160, Seven 280, Seven 360, Seven 480 and the new Seven 620R. Sevens will be shipped to the USA in part-built form and sold as rolling chassis via Superformance’s nationwide dealer network for customers to then complete the build personally.[17]

Superformance MKII 289 Slab Side Chassis:

The Chassis is the original John Tojero designed 3” tubular rail ladder with cross-member. This chassis is reproduced using drawings obtained from AC cars and also implements the necessary changes to utilize rack and pinion steering . The 3” tubes are tig and mig welded to guarantee a safer and stronger chassis. This is much stronger than the arc and gas welded originals. Pain staking efforts were made to reproduce the chassis as close to an original as possible while incorporating a few modern improvements, like inserting a 3″ square tube through the main rails to prevent flexing. Building the cars with a meticulous eye on authenticity took time, but this resulted in a superior driving experience.

Superformance MKII 289 Slab Side Body:

The Superformance MKII roadster bodywork replicates the later of the 289`s which incorporated modifications to fender flares that will accommodate the slightly wider tires fitted onto chrome wire wheels. One of the improvements made by Hi tech was that the footwells were tweaked so that the taller North Americans can now sit comfortably.

Superformance bodies are available in fourteen standard colors with or without striping:

  • Wimbledon White
  • Light Silver
  • Titanium Silver
  • Dark Silver
  • Yellow
  • Monza Red
  • Sunset Red
  • Malachite Green
  • British Racing Green
  • Indigo Blue
  • Royal Blue
  • Portofino Blue
  • Galaxy Blue
  • Black

Striping can be any of the standard colors and is painted as the first coat color on the body creating a smooth finish. Stripes are an added option.

Superformance MKII 289 Slab Side Front & Rear Suspension:

To compliment an original chassis you need to follow the same rules when it comes to the suspension. It had to be period correct, or as close as possible. The original slab side had a transverse leaf spring style suspension which requires different length springs to change camber settings we decided to use heim joints which were used on some of the original competition cars.

Another change with regards to safety was to add an additional pick-up point to the chassis to increase the shear strength of the bolt passing through the lower control arm rose joint or poly-bushed rod end. The original springs were made of thinner steel than that available today. In an effort to keep compression rate the same, this car comes with one blade less and “free camber” was changed to keep the ride heights equal from front to rear. This insistence on authenticity means that owners of a Superformance MKII Roadster will have virtually the same driving experience as the original.

Superformance MKII 289 Slab Side Engine and Transmission:

An Original would have probably been a 289 with a B.W T10. Today, the recommendation would be a 289/302 based engine with a more modern Tremec TKO or similar transmission.

Superformance MKII 289 Slab Side Interior:

Attention to small details like the replication of the glove box knob and the correct use of gauges make this car stand out from the others. A side screen pocket is fitted behind the seats on the rear bulkhead and door map pockets are also incorporated in the doors. Lush carpeting finishes off the cabin for a comfortable feel on the road.

MKII 289 FIA

Superformance MKII 289 FIA Cobra Passenger Side Front

Designed to emulate the great Cobra 289 race cars from that nostalgic golden era of racing in the 1960s. The MKII FIA is the 1st licensed continuation of the original AC-derived 289 Cobra that first appeared in 1962 winning 5 races. Loyal to the original lines and proper nostalgic characteristics of the original 1962 Cobra FIA, this car is built for the heart-racing 289 motor and a more modern Tremec TKO transmission. The MKII FIA can be tracked or street driven.

Superformance MKII 289 FIA Design:

Based on the FIA and USRRC endurance racers, the Superformance MKII FIA has many unique features. Just as the originals saw modifications to the AC Ace platform to improve them for racing, the Superformance MKII FIA gets a series of changes to differentiate it from lesser Cobras.

Superformance MKII 289 FIA Chassis:

To truly replicate the cornering feeling felt by the racers of the day, the chassis had to be as close to the original as possible. Unlike other manufacturers, the engineers of the Superformance MKII FIA have resisted the urge to make the ride “better” by fitting a reinforced chassis or unequal length control arms with coil-over shocks. Instead, only small functional changes were made for safety or practicality purposes. In fact, the original AC drawings of the chassis, springs, shocks and body dimensions were used to form the necessary jigs.

The 3” pipes have been tig and mig welded with computer assistance to guarantee a safer and stronger chassis than the arc and gas welded originals. The chassis is just about as close to the original as possible in this modern day. Building the cars with a meticulous eye on authenticity took time, but in the end, we feel that effort pays off in a superior driving experience for customers.

Superformance MKII 289 FIA Body:

The Superformance MKII roadster bodywork replicates the later of the 289`s which incorporated modifications to fender flares that will accommodate the slightly wider tires fitted onto chrome wire wheels. One of the improvements made by Hi tech was that the footwells were tweaked so that the taller North Americans can now sit comfortably.

Superformance bodies are available in fourteen standard colors with or without striping:

  • Wimbledon White
  • Light Silver
  • Titanium Silver
  • Dark Silver
  • Yellow
  • Monza Red
  • Sunset Red

  • Indigo Blue
  • Royal Blue
  • Portofino Blue
  • Galaxy Blue
  • Black

Striping can be any of the standard colors and is painted as the first coat color on the body creating a smooth finish. Stripes are an added option.

Superformance MKII 289 FIA Front & Rear Suspension:

Just like with the chassis, the same rule applied with the suspension development – it had to be period correct, or as close to it as possible. While the original used a transverse leaf spring style suspension, that arrangement requires different length springs to change camber settings. Because of that, the decision was made to go with heim joints, just like some of the original competition cars used. In fact, two options are offered here – The first being rose joints and the second being adjustable rod ends with poly bushings for a slightly less harsh ride.

Another change for safety was to add an additional pick-up point to the chassis in order to increase the shear strength of the bolt passing through the lower control arm rose joint or poly-bushed rod end. The original springs were made of thinner steel than that available today, so the engineers milled the modern units to the correct size and thickness. This insistence on authenticity means that owners of a Superformance MKII FIA will have virtually the same driving experience as those original racers from the ’60s.

Superformance MKII 289 FIA Engine and Transmission:

Under the hood of the originals resided a race 260 or 289 equipped with Webers. Only the first 75 cars were fitted with the 260 before the switch to the 289. The FIA cars also featured a Harrison radiator expansion tank (sourced from a 1963 Corvette) that was fitted above the transverse spring, and side exhausts that exited at the rear of the doors.

Superformance MKII 289 FIA Interior:

The FIA dash was altered by leveling the two shorter elements on either side of the center stack. This allowed the steering column to be dropped to give a more comfortable racing position as well as making enough space for the 3-3/8″ Stewart Warner tachometer to fit above it. In this position it was more visible to the driver. The rest of the instruments were replaced by the larger 2-5/8″ gauges and arranged differently on the dash. The speedometer, for instance, has been relegated to the passenger side. The bottom of the dash also features an upturned lip for strengthening, which also helps cure cowl shake. Strangely the grab handle remained, possibly to meet the FIA production regulations.

Superformance Chassis Numbers

The Superformance Cobra Chassis Number exists in one of these four formats:

1.) COB** or COB** – *** 5 or 8 character form: Used on cars up to 031

2.) AC9CSLK1000AM1*** 17 character form: Used on cars 032 through 577 and on cars 579, 580, 581, 582, 583, 584, 586. The 5th digit character is “S” for side pipes or “R” for rear exhaust – The 6th character is “L” for left hand drive or “R” for right hand drive

3.) SP*** 5 character form: Used on cars 578, 585, 587, 588, 589, 590.

4.) SP0**** 7 character form: Used on cars 591 and later. (PLEASE NOTE: the correct prefix is SP”zero” and not SP”oh”)

The asterisks (*) are the Car Number you are looking for that vary from car to car. Even if your VIN number fits this format, it may not be not be your chassis number. The only accurate way to determine the Superformance Chassis Number is as follows.

Locating the Superformance Cobra Chassis Number:

1.) The Chassis serial number is located on the VIN plate on top of the passenger foot well as viewed from the engine compartment. If you suspect the State removed it or replaced it with their own VIN…

A.) Open the hood. Look in from the driver’s side.

B.) Locate the upper front cross member. It is just in front of the engine. For reference, it typically has the remote oil filter mounted on it.

C.) On the top of the cross member about two inches from the left (driver’s side) upright, a number is stamped directly on the frame cross member. This is the Superformance Chassis Number. See above for determining your actual “car number.”

If you have a metal plate pop riveted in this location, your dealer has covered up the Superformance Chassis Number with you state VIN number. In this case, do not remove the VIN plate. Write “Covered by VIN plate” in the space for Superformance Chassis Number. In this case, it is particularly important that you verify the Car Number as indicated.

The chassis number is also stamped on the hood hinges. Check either hood hinge plate where it is bolted to the hood. The number is stamped into the hinge plate. It may be partially filled with paint and hard to read, but it can be read. The number may also be written in grease pencil in the hinge plate, but use the stamped number.

Open top, iconic looks, and a whole lot vintage – the Shelby Cobra is one of the most recognizable cars in history. Of course, the Ford v Ferrari movie from last year helped introduce the roadster to a younger generation of car nuts, and that's what Superformance is banking on with its latest release, the MKIII-R Cobra.

Taking after the legendary 1960s Cobra, Superformance is the only company that can build a Cobra replica with a license from Carroll Shelby Licensing Inc. it aims to bring the classic looks and performance of the open-top icon complemented with modern touches.

"The Superformance MKIII-R is the perfect combination of an old-school classic automobile infused with a bit of modern-day flair," said Superformance CEO Lance Stander. "The MKIII-R is a piece of American history, and with a major motion picture release last year that highlighted the Cobra, this vehicle’s popularity is at an all-time high. We took great care to ensure the Superformance MKIII-R lives up to the Cobra’s iconic legacy."

The Superformance MKII-R differs slightly from the Cobra, though. It has different fender scallops and hood scoop designs, plus the presence of front splitter and rear diffuser makes it look a bit edgier than the original Cobra, albeit, the Atlantic Blue paint job and anthracite stripes should give you a hint.

Underneath the fiberglass body comes modern touches such as the fully independent unequal-length A-arms with adjustable Bilstein coils over telescopic shock absorber at the front, and the fabricated hub carriers and coil-over shock absorbers at the back. The MKIII-R also comes with LED headlights and 18-inch wheels.

Inside, don't let the vintage look fool you, the MKIII-R has electronic gauges to complement the vintage leather trimmings and French-stitched body-color seats.

As with other Superformance cars, the MKIII-R rolling chassis sells without the engine for $79,900. However, installation kits are available for Ford 302, 351, 460, and 427/428 cubic-inch engines with Tremec 5-speed or Ford top loader 4-speed transmissions.
