Teen film critic Lights Camera Jackson tweets sexist Amy Schumer joke, gets called out by comedienne herself

His sense of humor gets zero stars.

Teen film critic Jackson Murphy — better known as Lights Camera Jackson — turned a simple selfie with Amy Schumer into a sexist slam on Twitter, shaming the award-winning comedienne in a tweet he deleted almost immediately.

Murphy — who has been spewing adjective-heavy film reviews since he was 7 — tweeted a pic Monday afternoon of him with Schumer at the Critics Choice Awards the night before.

Seemed cute enough — save for his commentary.

"Spent the night with @amyschumer. Certainly not the first guy to write that," he said to his 5,000 followers.

Twitter users immediately trashed the so-called "kid critic" ("Do you even know what sex is?" one user wrote) — and within minutes, Schumer herself panned him.

"I get it. Cause I'm a whore?" she wrote to more than 3 million followers.

Amy Schumer's wild antics

"Glad I took a photo with you. Hi to your dad."

Within a half-hour, Murphy took down the tweet and posted a mea culpa: "I truly apologize for the tweet I posted earlier. I'm not a comedian and it wasn't funny."

His bad joke comes a day after Schumer won the award for best actress in a comedy for "Trainwreck." She poked fun at her size during her speech Sunday night, calling herself "Hollywood's plus-plus-size" star.

This isn't the first time Murphy, the youngest recipient of a New York Emmy Award, has found himself in an unlikely public feud. Howard Stern famously called him "a freakshow" after watching Murphy's hyperactive (but mixed) review of "Inception" — back when the little critic was just 11. Around the same time, Gawker dubbed him "the most annoying movie critic ever."

My first published film review was in February 2012 on my High Schools online newspaper, back when I was just two months over the age of 16. I can never go back and look back through my writing from those days, though to be fair, I have the same problem with reviews written as recently as a day ago. The faults of my prose always stand out so much, and my insecurities over my writing will drive me absolutely up the wall. Anywho, I got started at this profession at a young age, and I was even younger when I first got hooked on the world of cinema.

Not all of us find our path to film this early in life (there are plenty of “late bloomers” in the world of film criticism who are masters at talking about the artform), but I’d say many individuals who are obssessed with cinema do find that they have this concrete affection for this medium of storytelling in the early years of being a teen. Point being, Jackson Murphy, a 17 year old film critic who goes by the name of Lights Camera Jackson, should not be derided for his age when it comes to his criticism of the cinematic arts. On the contrary, his age might provide a unique perspective on certain films, and over a larger career, one can even see how his writing grows or how his affinities for certain sectors of cinema might change.

Unfortunately, the promise of that concept isn’t quite fulfilled by his writing. One need only look at his reductive reviews (his review for Inherent Vice dubs the Paul Thomas Anderson film to be “Incoherent Vice”, a play on words that even I, the King Of Bad Puns, feel is too sloppy and obvious) and his recent activities on Twitter get your blood boiling on the dude. Now, full disclosure, my writing is not perfect, far from it. I’m sure he’ll improve as time goes on, and his reviews from 2015 already have far more nuance than when he was 11 years old and on The Today Show proclaiming Inception to be “too confusing” (yes, that really happened). However, the writing of Jackson Murphy is still egregiously underwhelming, putting easy puns (he closes out his review of The Big Short by noting how he’s “…not bullish on its prospects to be embraced by moviegoers and if I had stock in the film, I’d be selling”) over insightful critical analysis. But, to be fair here, such pieces of writing on their own would likely just get a handwave from me. After all, I was no Dilys Powell when I was 17, and the kids just writing and enjoying cinema. What’s the harm in that?

My ire for this individual stems not just from foibles in his writing style, but primarily from those aforementioned recent activities on Twitter. This morning, Mr. Murphy put up a photo of himself with Amy Schumer at the Critic’s Choice Awards on Twitter. His caption for the photo? “Spent the night with Amy Schumer. Certainly not the first guy to write that.” Allow me to forego mincing words here…the hell would possess this kid (and judging by his maturity here, I’d say he is very much a kid) to put up a caption like that?!?! In what state of mind would he have to be in to think that was a good idea??? He followed up that tweet with a post attempting to put the blame on those who had (more than justified) grievances with the Amy Schumer post, stating that “You people have dirty minds”. This was followed by Amy Schumer being a total bad-ass, calling this moron out on his shit on Twitter and Murphy declaring an apology to Schumer that might as well have been sponsored by the phrase “half-ass”.

Perhaps I should go for a more refined statement to describe Jackson Murphy’s actions in this predicament, but I think this simple phrase will sum it up nicely: what an enormous asshole.

Yes, I am aware that 17 year olds do stupid things all the time, I can say that with complete confidence due to experience. But age isn’t a 100% excuse for stupidity, just look at the misogynistic ramblings of film critic Jeff Wells. This rings especially true due to the fact that this isn’t the first snafu Jackson has had regarding saying terrible things on Twitter to celebrities. He also previously took a photo with Chiwetel Ejiofer, and then on the actors birthday posted the image with the caption “Don’t be slave to your diet, have some cake!”. His reaction to this Ejiofer caption was the same as his Schumer comments; at first trying to dodge having to apologize, and then tweeting out a half-hearted apologetic remark. Rinse, wash, repeat.

This may be what irritates me most about Jackson Murphy. Not his weak-ass reviews, not his young age, but his inability to learn from his mistakes. We all stumble in life, but the whole point of experiencing those blunders is to grow as a person. It’s pretty apparent that Jackson Murphy is not doing any of those things regarding his social media activities. Film critics, no matter the age, should try to offer something of substance to the world of cinematic analysis, bringing new ideas to the table stemming from unique perspectives and ideologies. The only thing Murphy has brought out thus far in his contributions as a film critic is an overdose of misplaced bad puns and slut-shaming.

hurts to just listen to this kid prattle on in another tab. he's right that inception sucked. and that ellen page is Inception's sexless vestigial tail.

one irate YouTube comment calls for him to be "curb stomped."

Amy Schumer Just Destroyed A Sexist Tweet By Teen Movie Critic Lights Camera Jackson

For anyone who doesn't know (and truly, I envy you) Jackson Murphy, aka Lights Camera Jackson, is a 17-year-old "film critic" slash horror, who, after unfortunately being indulged by famous critics like Roger Ebert, won two New York Emmy awards at age 11 for his "editorials" and on camera reviews of movies made by humans.

Since then, Jackson has been paid for terrorizing the Internet with his obnoxious and inappropriate opinions of an art he has no business reviewing on a professional level, regardless of whether he has some semblance of understanding for film.

Watch below, as "LCJ" gives Her--directed by genius Spike Jonez--a "C+" for being "too wacky!"

If you're like me, and you've often had to scream into pillows rather than respond to this teenager online, you can rest easy, because Amy Schumer silenced Jackson this afternoon, after he posted a truly sexist tweet at an adult woman.

Jackson was interviewing nominees on the red carpet for the Critics Choice Awards last night, and Schumer (who won multlple awards for her excellent movie Trainwreck and show Inside Amy Schumer) took the time to pose for a picture with the teen.

In return, Jackson posted this (now deleted) tweet, directed at Amy, which was promptly demolished by Schumer herself.

"Hi to your dad" should be the motto of 2016.

Jackson quickly apologized:

Obviously, teens say stupid things on the Internet, but if you're not going to learn how to be respectful of women from your dumb ass parents, no better person to teach you than Ms. Amy Schumer.

Have fun in college, Jackson.

Jackson lights camera

Two things that never cease to creep me out are child actors and local news personalities. Combine both of them and you get Lights Camera Jackson, aka Jackson Murphy, a news personality from the Albany area who’s been fascinating/terrifying us since 2010, when he was just 11. He still makes news from time to time, like when he made a crappy joke about Amy Schumer.

This week he went to a Donald Trump rally, tweeting: “You know who is at the TU. #Trump #Albany”

Before the event, he tweeted wondering if anyone needed a correspondent, and the jury is still out on whether LCJ, who will be old enough to vote in the upcoming election, is an honest-to-God Trump supporter or just aspiring to do more political coverage. Frankly, neither would be surprising. Creepy boy-men abound in both fields (as they do in film criticism, people in glass houses, etc).

Why am I writing about this kid? Surely he isn’t newsworthy, is he? Well, I wish he wasn’t, but keep in mind, he’s been on Leno, Fox & Friends, Ebert Presents: At The Movies, and more morning shows than you can shake a prompter at, eventually winning a New York State Emmy Award in 2010 for “On Camera Talent: Commentator/Editorialist,” presumably beating out a waterskiing squirrel. He still seems to show up at all the awards shows and is a member of multiple critics associations, so plenty of people are culpable in turning him into… well, whatever he is today.

The only thing creepier than a kid pretending to be an adult is a kid pretending to be a local news personality. Which is essentially a kid, pretending to be an adult, pretending to be a mannequin. It would be beyond perfect if that ersatz mannequin threw his plaster and tweets behind Donald Trump, the internet commenter of presidential candidates. Though it might be even more perfect that he managed to attend a Trump rally without saying anything substantive about it at all.

In the meantime, he has some fond memories to share with us about grilled cheese.

“Donald Trump is a presidential candidate! Also, I am very enthusiastic about your #brand, meep morp.”

Jackson Murphy

Jackson Murphy, known as Lights Camera Jackson (born August 26, 1998),[1] is an American film critic and entertainment columnist. He is the creator of the website Lights-Camera-Jackson.com, and has made appearances on television and radio. In 2010, he became the youngest winner to date of a New York Emmy Award for "On Camera Talent: Commentator/Editorialist".

Post-radio career[edit]

In 2010, He was nominated for two local New York Emmy awards,[2] and won "On Camera Talent: Commentator/Editorialist".[3] Murphy made numerous national TV appearances during the summer, including Weekend Today in late June and The Early Show four different times. He has also appeared on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" (twice), "The Nate Berkus Show", "Fox and Friends" (three times) and was featured on "Live with Regis and Kelly".[citation needed]

Murphy was signed by CBS as a contributing critic to The Early Show and, in the fall, also became a regular contributor on The Morning Show on the Seven Network in Australia. He has appeared on #1 Aussie "chat Show" more than 20-times.[citation needed] For five years his movie reviews also appeared every weekend in The (Troy) Record newspaper, and he has been the subject of articles and stories in both the U.S. and internationally, including an article in Variety.[4]

In July 2011, Jackson became a regular contributor for the popular movie review show Ebert Presents: At the Movies, in which he appeared on three episodes of the program.[citation needed] In those appearances, he provided commentary on 3-D film technology and listing his best and worst movies of the year at the time.[citation needed]

As the youngest member of the Broadcast Film Critics Association Jackson appeared on the "Critics Choice Movie Awards" in January 2013. Since November 2013, Jackson also has regularly appeared on "The Buttery Popcorn Report" on The FLY 92.3 in Albany, New York, as a part of the station's "Morning Rush". On The Buttery Popcorn Report, Jackson gives his opinions on all the new movies new in theaters that week, as well as New At Home on DVD/Blu-ray.[citation needed]

In 2016 he became the film critic on the Connecticut-based "CT Style" TV show, telling audiences which new movies to See and which ones to Skip. He also makes annual Awards Season appearances on Fox Sports Radio, analyzing the Academy Awards Nominations and making his Oscar Predictions. Jackson is also a regular contributor to the popular 'Animation Scoop' website, providing Q&A interviews with the most important and successful members of the animation world.[citation needed]

Best Films of the Year[edit]

Murphy compiled "best of the year" movie lists beginning in 2009, thereby helping provide an overview of his critical preferences. His top choices were:

Criticism[edit]

Murphy's early appearances on national television were met with some negative reception in the media; in 2010, Howard Stern criticized Murphy on his radio show, saying that an 11-year-old was too inexperienced to provide meaningful or valid film criticism.[17] Similarly, Matt Cherette of Gawker described Murphy's review of the film Inception as "insufferable."[18]

[edit]

On January 18, 2016, Murphy tweeted a photo of him and Amy Schumer at the previous night's Critics' Choice Awards, which he captioned "Spent the night with @amyschumer. Certainly not the first guy to write that." The tweet was criticized as sexist and unprofessional. Schumer replied to the post, tweeting, "I get it. Cause I’m a whore? Glad I took a photo with you. Hi to your dad.”[20] In response, Murphy deleted the tweet saying, "Thought you’d like the joke. I should leave the comedy to you! Thanks for the photo. Glad you won last night!." Schumer responded saying, "that's really okay honey. I just remember thinking you and your dad were sweet and it was a bummer to read that".
